- jcaino, on 06/14/2008, -1/+33Actually, siphoning is not possible on pretty much any modern car. There is a ball valve in the filler neck that prevents a hose from being inserted. The ball prevents gas from flowing freely if the car is flipped upside down. Inaccurate - I would expect more from a site that bills themselves as being obsessed with cars.
Sure, you could pick out and siphon gas out of that ancient clunker - but what are the chances that its going to have a small amount of gas? Probably pretty high.
edit: Oh, and the "bad" idea? Well, it will actually work, and you won't blow up, providing that you drill or puncture the tank where there is gas. Which you're probably going to want to do anyway, or else you aren't going to obtain much fuel. Put the hole in at about the lowest point on the tank. Only gas vapors are flammable, not the liquid. Gas prices have astronomically rose in the past several months. If it had been a slow, steady increase to the >$4/gallon we're seeing now, it wouldn't be such a big problem. The rate at which gas prices are increasing is outpacing everything else.

For example (source MSNBC) "But the after-tax price is $5.80 in France and over $6 a gallon in most other major European countries." You can see why this is going to be happening more regularly here i the US.
