- super_spyder, on 06/24/2008, -3/+19Tesla is the perfect guilt free luxury car.
- tcpip4lyfe, on 06/24/2008, -6/+22Want to feel less guilty about buying and driving a luxury car?
First, harden the ***** up. It's a car.
Second, Get the fastest one you can. - dcbebop, on 06/24/2008, -2/+16I drive a 2001 BMW 740iL sport. I get on average 22 mpg (it does average for you) and it's a V8. I think this is pretty good considering my friend's V6 Jeep Liberty gets around 14-16. Still not terrific, but still ...
- dgulbran, on 06/24/2008, -1/+14My Canyonero gets forty rods to the hogshead and that's the way I likes it!
- serif69, on 06/24/2008, -3/+15Good lord, all of these average around 19-20 MPG combined. I'd rather have the Mercedes S600 with the twin-turbo V12 and get 17 highway with my 612 ft-lb of torque than feel "guilt-free" getting 4 more MPG with just over half the power.
- killerknives, on 06/24/2008, -3/+13What the hell is the Jaguar XF doing on there? It gets awful mpg.
- blinktude, on 06/24/2008, -0/+9the list was made by an idiot
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -5/+13Since when is 18 mpg "guilt-free"?? My little Elantra gets almost twice that, and even my sporty Saab 9-3 (RIP) got in the neighborhood of 25. I realize most of the cars on this list are much bigger than either of those two, but isn't that the whole point? I guess 18-21 mpg looks good when you compare it to behemoths like the Escalade, but it's still nothing to brag about in objective terms, imo.

NO. ok? - bradleyland, on 06/24/2008, -0/+6The Tesla is a sport-oriented roadster, not a luxury car. Not that I wouldn't jump in line to buy one, had I the money, but it's not a luxury car.
- DreKor, on 06/24/2008, -0/+6Exactly. Right now I feel way to much guilt as I drive around knowing that I got my car with a crowbar and some wire cutters.
- Sairynn, on 06/24/2008, -3/+8What is there to feel guilty about? Let people spend their money how they like; my money belongs to me, it is not owed to anyone else. Charity is a wonderful thing to give, but there are also ways of helping others that aren't precluded by purchasing luxury items.
- litkaj, on 06/24/2008, -3/+7Global warming is a normal part of the life cycle of our planet.
- billbugger, on 06/24/2008, -2/+6I feel so bad for their guilt! They must have a tough life!
- granolajoe, on 06/24/2008, -7/+11"Unfortunately, when it comes to luxury cars low on guilt, the choices are slim. Most luxury cars offer fuel economy in the low- to mid-teens in terms of mpg and are powered by big V8 and V10 engines."
Yikes. A very subjective topic, largely dependent on how each individual defines "guilt-free." V8 and V10 engines? Damn. Luxury cars have a long way to go. - TheHayze, on 06/24/2008, -4/+8If you're dropping $50k+ on a luxury sedan/coupe.. I don't think gas prices are going to be that big a concern.
- sputza, on 06/24/2008, -11/+15Rich people don't feel guilt.
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 06/24/2008, -1/+4The author is cherry-picking to make a point.
She mentions the Lexus IS-IF, but the IS-250 is the exact same car with a smaller engine that gets 28mpg and costs about 1/2 the price. I would say this one is much more "guilt free". - ericmerrill, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3You're putting words in -my- mouth. I'm not worried about running out of oil. I'm worried about the impact of the oil we're using.
And yeah, whale oil worked PERFECTLY! "Whoops, there are like five and a half whales in the sea. Let's look elsewhere." Fantastic. Good to know we have to be at the brink of absolute horror before we change, even when we realize how easily we could have before it got big.
The difference is that whales repopulate, whereas the air doesn't exactly clean itself. There are places in the world where it's nearly impossible to grow more plants because it's so badly polluted. - inactive, on 06/24/2008, -2/+5Why would anyone ever feel guilty about owning a nice car?
This 21st century "SIN", or shall I say "CARBON GUILT" is out of control.
THere is no difference between today's DOOM and GLOOM global alarmist and the town crier who used to walk down main street screaming "God is coming, pay your carbon credits or spend eternity in the pit of despair". - gannondork, on 06/24/2008, -1/+4Sometimes I pour gas on Tibetan monks and light them on fire to show how evil I am.
- gannondork, on 06/24/2008, -3/+6They have a link at the bottom to a video about the G8, I would rather have that car over all the "guilt free" luxury cars any day.
- Hosalabad, on 06/24/2008, -2/+5Please stop digging Forbes. It's the business world version of all of those stupid Cracked.com top X lists.
- billbugger, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3There you are!
- jlab, on 06/24/2008, -1/+4Yeah, you know at 20 cents a gallon more for premium it just really breaks the bank when it cost $3-$4 more per fill up. I mean who can afford that?
- 9bpm9, on 06/24/2008, -2/+4And why am I supposed to feel guilty now?
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -1/+3Thats your interpretation, your own insecurity or envy that projects YOUR feelings on to the person driving the luxury car.
You realize you made that little fantasy up in your head right? You projected yourself into the drivers seat. You are only fantasizing what YOU would do if you were driving that car.
They were probably smoking. - GhostToon, on 06/24/2008, -2/+4I don't feel guilty for buying something I want with money I worked for.
- Infidelcastr0, on 06/24/2008, -4/+6Maybach Exelero.
- ThatEvilGuy, on 06/24/2008, -1/+3OK so basically, don't go for the premium models like M cars, AMG or Type R, and get a sub model.
- The_Red_Monkey, on 06/24/2008, -1/+3There are 28 formulations of gas in the US to deal with regional requirements. Its lame.
- mleh, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2Forbes has a tendency to be idiotic in their reporting of automobiles.
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2Tesla Motors FTW
- whyufail, on 06/24/2008, -1/+3Behold the self serving mentality that will ultimately ***** us all.
- pr0t0, on 06/24/2008, -1/+3Mine calculates MPG as well. I don't know if my car qualifies as "luxury", but I drive an '07 Volvo S60 2.5T. It's a turbo-powered 5-cylinder. I get 22.3 mpg average and 30-35 mpg on the highway, which I don't think is too bad.
Still, I'm getting an electric when I'm done with this one. - The_Red_Monkey, on 06/24/2008, -2/+4I don't feel any guilt in my Magnum R/T. 348 hp and 25 mpg on the highway.
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -1/+3Not as good as your mom sucks dick.
- SirSmash, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2You only get that MPG because your driving it like a grandma.
- 0260, on 06/24/2008, -3/+5why would you feel guilty? unless you are buying the gas for the money that you should using to feed your hungry children. even then, the car is more important
- wrestlingnrj, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2I saw it earlier this year at the weekly Cars & Coffee in Irvine, CA. Didn't see the owner though, I really would have liked to talk to him about it.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2Meh... I'll stick to my Jetta. 30 MPG, and it costs a fraction of what those cars do.
- iamjames, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1"I'd rather have the Mercedes S600 with the twin-turbo V12 and get 17 highway"
Sure, 17mpg if you drove non-stop across the country, otherwise the 4,600 lbs twin-turbo V12 S600 would never even approach 17mpg unless you shifted in neutral and rolled off a cliff. - iamjames, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1"dropping $50k+ on a luxury sedan/coupe.. I don't think gas prices are going to be that big a concern."
I love when people say something so stupid. You do realize the average car costs $28,000 now, don't you? So 50k for a car really isn't amazingly high like it use to be 10 years ago. Also, mpg *always* matters, because that's what it actually costs you to get from point A to point B. And if you keep the car for 200,000 miles, a 45mpg Prius would cost you $17,777 in $4/gal gas, while 20mpg costs $40,000. So not only did you pay more for the car, you also paid $23,000 more in gasoline. Double ouch. And when you go to sell it in 6 years no one wants the gas guzzler 20mpg car so you lost more money on resale. Triple damage. - biogears, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1As soon as the typical digger gets a job and makes enough money to buy something to replace their '75 Ford Granada, they might realize that having something decent that they worked for and not paid for by their parents or the taxpayer is an accomplishment to be proud of, not guilty for.
As it is now, whenever they see a Jag or MB, they think that someone else has to go hungry because of it. It's flawed thinking to believe that money is only moved between people, and not ever actually created.
Many of the comments here are based on envy, not reason or a selfless altruistic desire to save the planet. - Virgule, on 06/24/2008, -1/+2I won't ever feel guilt over a machine I can afford but I might very well feel dumb once I realize I could have bought a house instead...
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -1/+2Nope, just your mom's ***** last night.
- whyufail, on 06/24/2008, -0/+1Right. I mean, if I have the money to waste resources out the ass, why shouldn't I? ***** the environment, ***** humanity, billions may suffer but hey, at least I got to look awesome in my mobile penis!
So ignorant... -
