- borez, on 10/23/2008, -0/+22I lived in a car for a week because of a ***** up when I moved flats with some girl who basically wouldn't move out.
All I can tell you is that It didn't smell too good after a few days and, to be honest, I don't think I could have handled it without my gym membership for the showering element.
FTR: It was a Renault 19 turbo. - rwert, on 10/23/2008, -0/+15If you're gonna live in a van down by the river, might as well make that van stylin'! Also, roomy -- which is why I'd choose the Sprinter. That diesel-powered monster's bigger than my apartment. Of course, I live in Manhattan, so I get what I deserve.
- satanguy, on 10/24/2008, -0/+10this is becoming increasingly more relevant :S

- hardigree, on 10/23/2008, -1/+7The volvo station wagon is clearly the classy way to go.
- rwert, on 10/23/2008, -1/+7Now THAT sucks.

it's only good for lists when ugly, huh? - Wargalas, on 10/24/2008, -3/+7Or, you know, you could, like, not buy a house you couldn't afford, and live well below your means. I know, I know, radical thinking and all.
- catbeller, on 10/25/2008, -0/+4For you Ayn Randies out there smacking people around for not being as smart as you, I present Alan Greenspan, actual physical acolyte of the creator of John Galt. Take it, Alan:
"I made a mistake in presuming that the self-interest of organizations, specifically banks and others, was such as they were best capable of protecting their own shareholders."
BTW: He says that Fannie etc. didn't cause the crash. "Poor" and stupid people didn't either. It was the clever MBA's and finance wizards playing games with everyone's money. - LiceHelpDotCom, on 10/24/2008, -0/+4I have no idea how I found this group, but there are 6...yep, count 'em SIX vandwellers groups on Yahoo groups.

It seemed so outrageous to me that I HAD to sign up. These people are not camping, they are living in all kinds of vehicles. They are serious, and maybe smarter than we think.....
Check it out. - heyisa, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3Toyota Chinook is where's it's really at 20mpg rolling home that you can drive anywhere even in cities.

# Those most deserving will end up with the most?
# That the cream cannot help but always rise up to the top,
# Well I say: ***** floats. - inactive, on 10/24/2008, -0/+3And I bet you have no regrets! I'd be happy living in a closet in Manhattan.
- aywwts4, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3My wife and I go camping in my wagon, it's so much easier than pitching a tent, while also being more comfortable, dryer, quieter, etc. And we don't camp often enough to justify a camper of any sort.
I have privacy covers for all the windows, a custom cut foam mattress, and the car has nice small triangle window openings in the back to cycle the air. The only problem is the bouncing...
If I fell on really tough times I don't think it would be ideal, but it beats sleeping on the streets. - psykiv, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3Seriously, is it that hard to find a picture of a real school bus on google?
- centran, on 10/25/2008, -0/+3I have a volvo sedan. I have had to sleep in it after a couple nights of drinking.(don't worry, never in the drivers seat as that counts as a DUI in my state).
The backseats flip down for bigger trunk room. I flip those down and then climb into the trunk and pull the seats back up. This way no one "messes with me"/"freaks out"/"calls police" since they can't tell someone is sleeping the car. It is not to bad in a pinch but I wouldn't want to live in there. - itsthemechanic, on 10/25/2008, -0/+2You can always be a trucker, the job comes with a free house on wheels.. probably roomier and comfier than most places in NYC or London.
- talkingwires, on 10/25/2008, -0/+2I lived out of of my '95 Mitsubishi Eclipse for a month or two. It was a coupe, and after you folded the back seat down, there was quite a bit of room.
Plus, with the large back window, I could gaze up at the stars as I drifted off to sleep. But the downside was that large window would be completely fogged by morning, which gave me away. The parking meter attendant was as reliable as an alarm clock: 7:30 every morning, he'd come knocking on my window and wake me up, just in time to go to work. - spoofer56, on 10/24/2008, -1/+3Living in a van
Down by the river - inactive, on 10/25/2008, -0/+2Do you really have to ask that =)
- mrgreen4242, on 10/25/2008, -0/+2I've said for a long time if my wife ever though me out I would never buy another house or rent an apartment. I'd buy a decent used Eurovan with folding bed, mini fridge, microwave, toaster oven, MacBook Pro, unlimited cell data plan, and a cheap gym membership to shower at (and swim/work out, of course). I'd park at work overnight, hit the gym in the AM for a quick workout and shower, pop back over to the office all ready to go so as to not appear to have slept in the parking lot... The article mentions the size of the Dodge Sprinter. though, and it's almost big enough to make a full camper out of, so maybe a better option that the Eurovan.
Anyways, the whole idea of living in a car has a certain appeal to me. The freedom of being nomadic like that is somehow very America. With the miniaturization of technology, especially communication devices, and ubiquitiousness of our 24 hour service industry, living in a (large) car might not be bad these days. - sockpuppets, on 10/24/2008, -0/+2#11. Your neighbor's car.
- ASfinkterSezWut, on 10/25/2008, -0/+2I lived in my 280Z for 4 months between First and Second year University... I highly DON"T recommend it.
Thank God for the showers at the Uni! - AndersenWatcher, on 10/25/2008, -1/+31/2 Dugg up for Ford Econoline. 1/2 Dugg up for hot lovin' down by the river.
- URnotheonly1, on 10/24/2008, -1/+3my hummer H3! I have DVD in the seats and satellite radio.
- Spinducky08, on 10/25/2008, -0/+2Shoot! I lived for about 6 months in my '98 Camaro. (couldn't afford the rent increase for the house). It was actually pretty roomy. Seats could fold back enough to be able to sleep and had AC (weather was pretty darn hot during that time). I bought a small television and hooked up my Playstation and DVD player. Camped out at truck stops and rest areas. Got hassled a couple times from the cops because you know being homeless is a crime to them. It sucked, but I still had a job and the money really racked up in the bank account quick (since I wasn't paying nearly $500 for rent every month) so that I could get another place.
- borez, on 10/23/2008, -0/+2What the car or the experience?
FTR: they both sucked - DforSpiD, on 10/25/2008, -0/+2You got a lot of burying ahead of you today then...
- clarient, on 10/24/2008, -1/+2I think I could totally pull off living in my Honda Fit.
- joy2k9, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1love the caravan! !
- URnotheonly1, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1but can they live in it
- cloeequips, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1Good point, but so does cardboard over a subway grate.
- Insolent, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1Have you tried climbing into the back of one? It's not that roomy. It's a hard, uneven, very uncomfortable plastic behind the rear seats. The only thing it has going for it is the tent that you might use while camping, placing it on dry dirt, which would be difficult to legally camp out at outside of a national park. Plus it's ugly.
- mdub562, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1Now if we can get how to access digg on the cheap we will be prepared for the recession.
- feliks2, on 10/25/2008, -0/+1They come in passanger versions with seating for 12. In Europe I've ridden in Sprinters with seating for 19. Those have windows.
- ByrcheWroot, on 10/25/2008, -1/+2Good thing I bought number 7 last year. BRING ON THE DEPRESSION! :(

- 4321234, on 10/25/2008, -1/+1Same thing as a blow rabbit.
- blankman, on 10/24/2008, -2/+2I know this was a joke, but come on. Who the hell would buy a VW Golf to live in? Or a Mazda 5? Those are like two of the worst cars possible to live in.
Seriously, a big van like the econoline is the best way to go, because you can actually sort of live in the open back area, instead of just sitting in the drivers seat when you're "home" - inactive, on 10/25/2008, -1/+1Or consumes too much fatty food. Like bacon. Greasy, yummy bacon.
- cloeequips, on 10/25/2008, -0/+0 I bet that was a long week. I woudn't feel safe sleeping a car. I always freak myself out with the goat man stories.
