- barcelona10, on 03/23/2009, -0/+13"The car I’m sitting in is so futuristic and so technically advanced that it would cost nearly a million dollars to duplicate." holy mother...
- pitchblack16, on 03/23/2009, -0/+13Call me crazy, but I like it.
- pitchblack16, on 03/23/2009, -0/+11I feel dirty now
- inactive, on 03/23/2009, -0/+9Don't worry, I laced that comment with GHB and once it kicks in...you won't feel a thing. Giggity
- sekramer, on 03/23/2009, -0/+9well, it only holds one person. And if you're taller or heavier than average, you won't even fit in this car -- not quite ready for the masses.
- inactive, on 03/23/2009, -0/+9You're crazy... yeah, you like it when I call you crazy, don't cha? you crazy dirty little whore.
- escottberg, on 03/23/2009, -1/+8Looks like there's still innovation coming out of Detroit (or the surrounding area, at least)...
- pakman134, on 03/25/2009, -0/+6I donated $50 and bought a cell to help them out. Michigan's solar car team is crazy. They're the most successful team in the US and have won the past 5/9 North American Solar Challenges (2500 miles across North America). This past year they beat all other teams by over 10 hours. They're one of the US teams that actually have a shot at winning the World Solar Challenge (1800 miles across Australia), which hasn't been won by a US team since GM started the race in 1987. Check out their website at http://www.umsolar.com
- hoisonsauce, on 03/25/2009, -0/+5Are there specific dildos for asses? Or is there a dildo shaped like an ass? If it's the latter, how the hell does that even work?
- 1randomnumber, on 03/25/2009, -1/+6Screw you, Michigan. You guys have far too much money for your own good.
Their budget is over 2 million.
Purdue solar's budget is at the very most $200k for a solar car. And save for the ridiculous cost of a space-grade array, it's just as good.
/purdue solar racing member - las3rjock, on 03/25/2009, -0/+5Nota bene: the $2 million figure is the total estimated value of the cash and in-kind donations (both parts and labor) to the Michigan solar car team, and every dollar of that is the result of team members working very hard to get those donations. And it's very necessary when your goal is to win the World Solar Challenge and your main competitor is basically sponsored by the European Space Agency and has access to solar cells that aren't available to civilians in the United States...
- kgerm, on 03/25/2009, -0/+5dugg for the Altoids tin in the battery box
- atomicpoet, on 03/23/2009, -1/+5Now, if only we can mass produce it...
- chriszuma, on 03/25/2009, -0/+4Yeah, second place by 10 hours.
- michaelmior, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3Check out http://omegasolar.ca for a new team from Canada :)
- sgtnoodle, on 03/25/2009, -0/+3Thats my altoids tin!
funny conversation from the last race:
German Guy: What is that, Altoids???
Me: Oh. It is a brand of curiously strong breath mint.
German Guy: Yes yes, I know what Altoids are. What is in it? - sgtnoodle, on 03/25/2009, -0/+3Although that would make you the coolest person at school, you and/or your date's dress would have no way of fitting into the cockpit. There just isn't that much room inside.
- spasewalkr, on 03/25/2009, -0/+3Yes, that was one of our better ideas.
:P - malanic, on 03/25/2009, -2/+5Um,,,
Are you on the same planet, or did you just drop in from a UFO?
Try reading the article. - Racer20, on 03/25/2009, -0/+3Uhh, that's a justified response . . .
- benhollister, on 03/25/2009, -0/+3Ditto
/Spartan solar enthusiast - sefert, on 03/25/2009, -0/+3Principia has a great solar car. They spent a tenth of the money, and won second place.
- diggydougie, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2Or the power companies can get in the business of leasing them at a rate comparable to what we are currently paying already. It won't put the power plant out of business because it will BECOME their business.
- vilago, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2typical. put a blanket statement on something you know ABSOLUTELY nothing about. it's people like you that make this country so embarrassing.
- diggydougie, on 03/25/2009, -2/+41. It's not a hybrid. It's all electric.
2. It's a solar race car so it is built to be as light and streamlined as possible.
3. Go to your nearest car dealership and they will show you more decent-looking cars, that look like cars than you want. And you can drive them yourself.
This is for a contest to push the edge of technology. It's not meant for anything else. - vilago, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2typical. put a blanket statement on something you know ABSOLUTELY nothing about. it's people like you that make this country so embarrassing.
- sgtnoodle, on 03/25/2009, -1/+3The car is street legal and safer than you think. Height-wise, the front of the car is around the same height as the bumper of a normal car. The purpose of the front of the car is to minimize aerodynamic drag, but as you suggest, it is also there to protect the driver in an impact and slice children in half.
I promise that several aerospace engineers put months of effort into making the solar car look like that just to annoy you. If your ass is shaped like a solar car, then that is something you should bring up with a doctor... not a comments thread on digg. - emstark, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2Altoids tins just happen to be a perfect fit for telemetry boards!
- inactive, on 03/24/2009, -0/+2fascinating Idea, hope it becomes commerically viable.
- kgerm, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2aww.. man, you acutely made me LOL...
i love Altoids tins from building cmoy amps and other simi useless things...
but yeah, it gives it that final nerd touch! good job!
btw what is it interfaced with a router? and why? - vilago, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2typical. put a blanket statement on something you know ABSOLUTELY nothing about. it's people like you that make this country so embarrassing.
- saintamour, on 03/25/2009, -0/+1Ditto
/Western Mich Univ. solar enthusiast (future member?) - dygel, on 03/25/2009, -2/+3Of course, a solar powered car wouldn't be going very far in the state of Michigan...
- cygnus2112, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/57 ...
@sgtnoodle: shaped like an ass? What are you going on about? - diggydougie, on 03/25/2009, -1/+2Here's what I wanted to see in the article. A Block diagram of the panels, batteries (if any), drive motor(s) etc. A description of what this electric car has that the other cars like it has. Maybe some discussion on the innovations that will be needed to make this kind of car more road worthy and producible.
You know, anything other than the typical "gee-wiz an electric car" crap. We've seen these before. We get it. Now make it interesting. - kgerm, on 03/25/2009, -0/+1but i want it for prom!
- diggydougie, on 03/25/2009, -0/+1Yeah, just like all the other race cars.
- sinembarg0, on 03/26/2009, -1/+2The UM Solar Car Team has a business section that finds companies who are willing to donate parts. Many of the teams on campus do that. I know that the Formula SAE team has an ECU worth over $100k that was donated to them. That's just how they get their parts, but they also have free labor, the students do it for fun.
// University of Michigan engineer that looked into joining the team (way too much time commitment though) - diggydougie, on 03/25/2009, -0/+1I suppose that it is a good sign that most people are seeing this as a potential car to own. At least from the comments here.
- kgerm, on 03/25/2009, -1/+1just say no to trolls
- Swivelstick, on 03/25/2009, -1/+1Hopefully about the same time they do you?
- Plower, on 03/25/2009, -1/+1U of Mich's??
- Racer20, on 03/25/2009, -1/+1None of that is the point of the car/program. There are plenty of articles about electric cars and solar power out there. I'm sure there's some sort of tool out there to find them. I don't know what they're called . . . looking engines, search motors . . . something like that. I've heard about this new thing called Lycos, you might try that.
- inactive, on 03/25/2009, -2/+1The Government should give people that want solar panels for there roofs interest free loans to get them. The min payment to repay the loan should be the same price as there current electric bill
Think about how much less oil American would use if every roof in America had solar panels on it
if you think this is a good idea then write your senator. You can find there contact info here http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/ ... - jamesdew, on 03/30/2009, -1/+1Ha, I could have gone into more detail I guess but I know lots about solar cells thanks.
- emstark, on 03/25/2009, -1/+1funny you should ask, because it actually DID sustain an impact with another car, and its driver and everyone in the other car came out unharmed.
- inactive, on 03/24/2009, -5/+4So, conspiracy nuts; when is evil big oil going to kill this one?
- SoopaflySAM, on 03/25/2009, -4/+3Why do all Hybrid vehicles must look like UFO's? Are aircraft designers in charge of the Hybrid department? All I want is a decent-looking car, that looks like a car!
