Unless of course the fluid were squirting out with a large force. Then any forward velocity would have a minimal impact. - commenter01, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1"Then any forward velocity would have a minimal impact."
Still, the fluid splashing up looks like a circular pattern, which means he must have been going pretty slow. I take it this guy was just coming down from a nose wheelie, which is why his arms are extended and the back of his bike is in the air. You cannot be going too fast for that.

- DeskFlyer, on 05/17/2008, -0/+17Why do people have such a hard time comprehending that it is possible to take a perfectly timed photograph? It is likely that the photographer was planning on simply taking a normal shot hoping to get a biker speeding toward him and ended up getting something 1,000 times better when the rider decided to wipe out as he was pressing the shutter button. This is how many amazing shots are captured, especially in a fast-paced setting; sometimes you just get lucky by having something instantaneous occur while the curtains are open, even if you weren't banking on it. For Pete's sake people, not everything extraordinary is a staged photograph.
- bitterbug, on 05/18/2008, -0/+6I don't think a lot of people understand how fast a good high-end SLR camera operates, nor the number of shots a photographer can take in burst/drive mode. Even the old film cameras with motor drives took beautiful crystal-clear shots of F1 cars driving past at 200 mph. If a photog is out there snapping pics of riders at an event, chances are they'll get something good in the hundreds or even couple of thousand pics they could shoot in a day.

- DubiousDrewski, on 05/17/2008, -1/+8That's not brake fluid. How much brake fluid do you think there is in a bike??
That's the hydraulic suspension failing. Do you notice that his handlebars are straight and his wheel is turned? Does it make more sense now?- zephyr42, on 05/17/2008, -5/+4He's doing a nose wheelie or "stoppie", meaning he's using the front brakes a lot and there's a lot of pressure built up in the lines, and if torn will gush out all at once. Sport bikes use hydraulic disc brakes(this model uses 4 piston and 4 pads) and it needs a lot of fluid to drive 4 large pistons, you would be surprised how much fluid they use.
Also they don't use a hydraulic suspension either as far as I can remember, it's far too heavy and frankly impractical if they did. Most companies use a standard inverted cartrage fork either air/spring or just spring with adjustable rebounds of course. - honesttussey, on 05/17/2008, -0/+6I think you are making up stuff to sound like you know what you're taking about.
1) Bikes use very little brake fluid. The front reservoir probably only hold about 2 or 3 cups. When I flush out my brake fluid I barely use 1/4 of a bottle and the bottle are like 12oz
2) The amount of force he's using on the brakes isn't what caused the liquid you see. Sit on a bike and squeeze the front brake lever as hard as you can with both hands. You won't cause a line to burst. The fact that he's doing a stoppie doesn't mean his brakes should fail. They are engineered to withstand that amount of pressure easily. You could grab a handful of brake and stop the front wheel in it's track and flip the bike over pretty easily but that won't break the line.
3) They don't use hydraulic suspension. They use springs, but the forks are loaded with fork oil. A good amount. See that silver tube extending out of the gold section of the bike? That tube goes all they way up to nearly the handle bars and it's filled with fork oil. And There are two forks, one on each side. that it mostly what is gushing out.
My guess is the axle on the wheel snapped and somehow punctured or ripped open the forks causing the fork oil to spew out. - d3matt, on 05/18/2008, -1/+1I can barely imagine an axle breaking unless it was machined incorrectly. I can image some idiot not putting the cotter pin in the axle and it coming apart though I'm not sure it would result in such a catastrophic failure of the forks.
But yeah, it's almost definitely not brake fluid... there's nowhere near enough fluid in the entire reservoir/lines to spray that much. If you don't believe us and have access to a bike, bleed the line. That will give you an idea of how much brake fluid actually would come out if it were to fail under pressure.
On a side note, I had something similar happen on a BMX bike. I had my handle bars come off into my hands while doing a bunny hop on pavement!

It then turned out that he hadn't put things back together quite right and so he got a face full of tarmac.- falstaff, on 05/17/2008, -2/+1And based on how much oil has already come out, the whole wreck isn't happening very quickly.
- Harbinger67, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4The front forks on a motorcycle are under a tremendous amount of pressure during a stoppie. It's no surprise that the fluid came gushing out when the tube broke.

The next photo's what? - dougmc, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4`I can tell this is a 'shop from some of the pixels and from having seen quite a few photoshops in my time'
As for the next picture in the series, moment19.jpg is a guy being chased by a cow in water. More pictures were probably taken of the crashing bike, but they weren't saved on this guy's site, probably because they lack the `oh *****!' factor that this picture has. And besides, it's probably better to let you guess at what the aftermath was than to actually tell you. Our guesses are probably worse than the reality anyways :)

- bryanwebster, on 05/17/2008, -1/+3looks like he was going pretty slowly and breaking when this happened to his front wheel. Probably not as painful as it looks but he should still be wearing a helmet and jacket.

i love these posers, helps keep a nice pile of cheap replacement parts. :)- SatansSpatula, on 05/18/2008, -1/+2just no gas tanks, fairings, frames, er... Actually, they don't provide much of anything except for engines, and even those have probably been thrashed (how many wheelies can a clutch basket take before slagging off chunks of aluminum into the oil flow?).
In terms of personal benefit, I'd much rather see a picture of the poseur on the shiny Duc 1098 who lowsides it coming out of the Google parking lot and has to write it off due to fairing damage.

- billbugger, on 05/17/2008, -14/+9It's not IF you'll wreak on a bike, it's WHEN you'll wreak on a bike. Sad truth about steet bikes.

–verb (used with object)
1. to inflict or execute (punishment, vengeance, etc.)
I had no idea bikes filled people with such blood lust. - devonkeale, on 05/17/2008, -0/+9Yes, 'steet' bikes are quite impossible to drive without wreaking.
It's also quite impossible to write a sentence without spelling incorrectly, for some people.
/haven't wrecked my sportbike yet. - KaJuN4, on 05/17/2008, -0/+5There are three kinds of motorcyclists: those who have gone down, those who will go down, and those who are lying about it. I'm in the first group but I still love to ride.
- zephyr42, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4Harley's are responsible for more motorcycle deaths per year than "street" bikes as you say...
- KaJuN4, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1That number would go down considerably if most Harley owner's would spend even half as much time learning to ride properly as they do polishing their chrome. I've also noticed that helmet-wearing is not as common with Harley riders compared to other motorcyclists.
- mllawso, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1Yeah, but you can increase the interval between wrecks by not being a douchebag and/or idiot.

- keithjinternet, on 05/17/2008, -17/+5Can I hear a photoshopped?
- dlite922, on 05/18/2008, -2/+1Actually looking at the pic again...well...i don't know.
What's that oil like liquid where the tire is suppose to be? Hydraulics fluid?
Why does the ground have some blemishes in the shadow. The lighting on the front wheel fender doesn't look like.
I might be just stretching your opinion but I can't make up my mind.
- dlite922, on 05/18/2008, -2/+1Actually looking at the pic again...well...i don't know.
- cabdirazzaq, on 05/17/2008, -8/+1Interesting BUT if you look carefully behind him, you'll notice his friend is just about to start his engine which means he himself had just started. I'd guess he was probably driving around 10-15km/h. It will defiantly hurt, but not much.

- cabdirazzaq, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4Dugg. I definitely deserved that, can I at least defend myself with reminding everyone I'm from Sweden and the very notion that I'm able to put some English words (every now and then) in some sort of meaningful order should compensate for a few stupid mistakes?
- Thefascist, on 05/17/2008, -0/+5Interesting how you're able to tell so much about his friend's intentions from the photo, I say it was the butler ... in the attic ... with a candle stick.
- snafflepaffle, on 05/18/2008, -0/+0What's going to really hurt is the faceplant he's going to do. Even at 3-5 MPH falling directly on your face from 4-5 feet up can be enough to kill you. And then the bike is going to fall on top of him. Ouch! Without a helmet it could be his final *****.

- mzkply, on 05/17/2008, -0/+11Nice, you can see the hydraulic fluid spilling out of the shocks!
- fafaforza, on 05/18/2008, -1/+3It's actually fork oil, which, because of its viscosity, is used for dampening effect in suspension. Brake fluid would be considered a hydraulic fluid on a motorcycle. It is part of a fluid system which causes motion or action -- the closing of brake calipers. Don't mean to sound like a know-it-all tool, though :P
- SatansSpatula, on 05/18/2008, -1/+11) It's damping, not dampening. Dampening means wetting.
2) Viscosity and incompressibility are both aspects of fluids. It's not really wrong to refer to fork oil as hydraulic fluid, since hydraulic merely means pertaining to fluids.
