  • Gndoab, on 07/02/2009, -1/+5except it takes more energy to compress the air than one gets by using it as a fuel source. it's better and more energy efficient to continue using gasoline, since the gasoline (or coal) would have to be burned anyways at the power plant to power the machine at your house or at the refilling station, or wherever, adding in another step, and less efficiency.

In order words, it's a matter of seeing if the power created by the compressed air combustion is greater than the power created by a normal air combustion + the power to compress the air. Thats their theory. And I hope it's true because it would mean energy savings for all of us.

    Old technology is old.. More moving parts, more friction, it takes power to compress air (see turbo or super charger). Nothing radical here.

Of course, we'll never know if it's reality until they start building them and subject them to independent testing, but at least they're not purely rehashing the old technology.

    1. Lying about 4 stroke engines compressing air twice. Doesn't happen.
    2. Lying about other available engine designs, such as two stroke motors.
    3. Lying about ignition timing and its consequences. You can delay ignition timing in any current engine if you want. You'll just lose power and efficiency, though you will also reduce combustion temperatures and thus reduce NOX.
