- sciencedr, on 04/08/2009, -7/+46Leno has a lot of cedibility with cars, his vast collection includes many first run models like his Dodge Viper, Ford GT, Harley V-rod, a bunch of Corvettes, Cameros, Challenger, Mini E and others. We saw his one off custom GM built hydrogen hybrid at SEMA last year. I bet he gets a first run VOLT too.
- inactive, on 04/08/2009, -6/+36You gotta give credit to Leno for trying to help anyway he can. We'll see what happens
- livintoolive, on 04/08/2009, -8/+31I'd rather watch him test drive a Volt than watch some of those segments on the Tonight Show. It would also be a great way to encourage faith in the US auto industry...
- rockyrobins, on 04/08/2009, -2/+19So, what I didn't get from the story...Did he drive it, what was it like, the pluses and minuses. Details people, please! Might be better than a Prius, but in what way? This low-info fluff does not get my digg.
- imnojezus, on 04/08/2009, -0/+14I was hoping he'd be part of the American version of Top Gear.
- rhummer37, on 04/08/2009, -2/+12That's Camaros boss
- jbmcb, on 04/08/2009, -0/+10I read about it - he declined because he was worried that the producers wouldn't allow honest reviews, in deference to automotive advertisers.
- alandil, on 04/08/2009, -1/+10These comments suck.
- fooljoe, on 04/08/2009, -1/+10don't forget his 2008 Tesla Roadster. Curious how the article overlooks that as well.
http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/video/video_player.s ... - UselessTrivia, on 04/08/2009, -0/+9Doesn't that happen to every concept car?
I wish GM would stick to their guns on occassion. One of the reasons they're in such trouble is that all their cars look like crap compared to european or japanese cars with more striking features. - Shiftgood, on 04/08/2009, -1/+10I think we need more than just 1 solution right now.
- carterx, on 04/08/2009, -3/+10Would love to have his fortune of cars:
http://www.jaylenosgarage.com - smartassCanuck, on 04/08/2009, -0/+7um.. it IS a 4 door (the concept was a 2 door, the production model they've been showing is a 4-door.)
IF GM ends up filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy the reorganization will likely end with 2 separate companies, one will go under the other will solider on. This should allow them to produce the car so there's still a really good chance it'll see production. - bjs3171, on 04/08/2009, -1/+8that is, you know, except for people who think this one car might be good to own. don't really care about what it means for the overall company, but 40 miles purely on electricity sounds great. i drive at most 20 miles a day, normally.
- zenerdiode, on 04/08/2009, -1/+7Except how do we make the hydrogen for the FCX?
Oh, that's right...with electricity. I bet you wish it were as simple as grabbing a bag of hydrogen from the air, eh? So why add a middle man to the process.
Oh, also, you forgot about the infrastructure - drneu01, on 04/08/2009, -12/+18I am ready to drive one off the lot!
- pacerx, on 04/08/2009, -1/+7He spoke pretty glowingly about the Tesla Roadster, and pretty much said that electric cars are the future of motoring.
- jamaph, on 04/08/2009, -1/+7How about his bike with a jet engine on it? Unbelievably fast.
I mean, how about his jet engine with wheels and a seat? Way fast. - DarkShroud, on 04/08/2009, -0/+5@leighton0h, Telsa is having problems meeting demand for the car. It's also has a price tag over a $100k depending on the features you order.
- conebone69, on 04/08/2009, -0/+5
No. - DrDash, on 04/08/2009, -0/+4I thought the same thing. Saw the episode just the other day. Jay said Electric was not the way to go, he things its Hydrogen. Season 12 Episode 7
- inactive, on 04/08/2009, -0/+4What a ***** article - there's really no content here. Look I can write it in a sentence.
"Leno drives Volt, has somewhat positive and vague opinion on it." - UselessTrivia, on 04/08/2009, -0/+4I stand corrected. The production version is a 4 door now. The original concept car (last picture I saw) was a 2 door coupe.
If they can keep it under 30 grand I'm in! Assuming it gets made of course. - DirtyBinLV, on 04/08/2009, -0/+4I believe they are testing the real batteries in both test rigs and these "mule" cars. Those batteries may not be identical to the ones that end up in production, but they're close.
- Boofster, on 04/08/2009, -2/+5Jay Leno never makes negative or critical comments about anything.
A wise man once said, something has to suck for other things to not suck. - DarkShroud, on 04/08/2009, -0/+3The EV1 didn't die, it was killed. It also never had a viable production model because GM was never fully behind it.
- CoD4, on 04/08/2009, -1/+4Credibility goes out the window when you're being paid so say good things
- DarkShroud, on 04/08/2009, -0/+3You've never seen his baker electic:
http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/video/video_player.s ...
Or his Tesla:
http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/video/video_player.s ...
He also has a Mini E:
http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/video/video_player.s ... - leighton0h, on 04/08/2009, -0/+3dude this was awesome...totally cool watchin jay talk about it...now I'm just wondering why there arent like thousands on the road?
- fooljoe, on 04/08/2009, -0/+3thanks for the info. it would be nice if an article made it to the front page that actually possessed some kind of real journalism to find out these things.
- spritom, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2Jay Leno on the electric car and how it will "save the automobile"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AUurBnLbJw
begins at 4:44 - fooljoe, on 04/08/2009, -1/+3FTA: he drove a "cruze-body mule".
doesn't mention what kind of batteries it has in it either, but I doubt they're the actual Volt batteries. probably just some lead-acid golf cart batteries. - arbulus, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2So wind turbines to power his gigantic car garage isn't environmentally conscious? hmmm.
- thunderbeard13, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2Finally...an electric car that doesn't look like complete *****.
- Boofster, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2He never says anything negative or critical about any car. I respect his passion but not his comments.
- arbulus, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2Exatly what we need: comedians in the White House. What's next? Simon, Paula and Randy on the Supreme Court? 1 Vs 100 Congressional debates? Legal trials decided by the court audience texting in their votes on the verdict?
- thurows, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2Hydrogen cars use a fuel tank and can be filled in minutes. Electric cars usually mean batteries and take hours to recharge. Road trip in hydrogen no different with the infrastructure in place, road trip in a battery powered electric, weeks.
- DarkShroud, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2Maybe, I don't seem him pushing for one unless he justs wants it for his collection. As Leno actully owns a Tesla which gets better performane and longer range. They're both 2 seaters as well. If that Mini was 4 seater it could be a serious contender as a family car until the Tesla Sedan comes out.
- Jektal, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2Leno does have a lot of credibility, but this article doesn't indicate at all what he thought of the Volt.
- markgl, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2I actually like the volt. I'd love to have that car. It looks sweet and i wouldn't use much gas anymore and yeah, I want one!
- mraymond80, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2I'm not real sure why people are burying you, I guess they aren't car enthusiasts? I watch every week, his car collection & knowledge about them is second to none!
- modix, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2GM recently said that even if they had to cut a huge amount of their vehicles, the Volt was going to remain on track. It's their hope for a new future, and I don't think they're going to be able to just let it rot.
- fooljoe, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2the article states that but I didn't see anything about it on his site http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/
also as far as I know neither GM nor Honda will do anything but lease their fuel cell vehicles (as they're worth way more than they could get selling them). - fooljoe, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2i wonder if he actually gets to keep that Mini E. as far as I know they're only available on a 1 year lease.
- someguy92, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2@leightonOh
The Tesla Roadster isn't very practical. The batteries are expensive and have a limited lifespan before they need to be replaced. One of the major problems with pure electric vehicles is that you're stuck if the battery runs out of charge. The volt appeals to people because it has a backup gas generator which allows it to function as a hybrid over long road trips. - eviljolly, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/video/video_player.s ...
Particularly interesting video about the first real hybrid car. - BoneStamp, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1The article that Leno has a Chevy Equinox hydrogen in his possession (and so do a number of journalists in Southern California, the only place with a hydrogen fueling stations). Does anyone have an FCX Clarity? Hydrogen is the future, but not until there is a fueling infrastructure. Motortrend, Dec 2008 has a great article on fuel-cell vehicles and the fueling network in SoCal.
- fooljoe, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1right, but the key is to realize that the "instant recharge" is the ONLY benefit of hydrogen, and when you weigh that against all the negatives it's a very tough sell. and by the time hydrogen is economical it's very likely battery electric vehicles will be able to recharge just as fast.
in the meantime and in the foreseeable future battery electrics are by far the best option for most commuters, and plug in hybrids or regular old combustion cars will still be kept around for the occasional long trips.
oh and like i said before, yeah you could produce your hydrogen at home, but with all the losses from electrolysis and compression and storage you're going to get a lot less mileage out of your solar panels. - momedefome, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1I'll admit , that car looks really badass
- DarkShroud, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1Ed Begley actually practices what he preaches unlike some, *cough* Al Gore *cough*.
