- diggitalism, on 03/31/2009, -10/+34please do not end the corvette. apart from the obvious supercars, it's the only piece of american muscle we have that can touch the sheer power of european exotics.
- reiner15, on 03/31/2009, -0/+16I sense a bias and presumption about corvettes and their owners here... so how many of you actually own one?
- Chirp08, on 03/31/2009, -0/+10I'd have gotten a used one, a 12 second car that gets 25-30mpg on the highway? Sign me up. Couldn't justify only seating 2 and being useless on anything other then dry ground (which is not smart in Jersey during winter).
- jsffive, on 03/31/2009, -0/+10The retirees are worried that they're not going to get their pensions?
Funny, so am I... the difference is, I haven't been making the top hourly rate for the past thirty years. They have. And whenever I go out to buy a new car, I don't get the "employee's rate". They do. I get to "retire" at whatever age Social Security says. They get to retire at 55. They have a labor union championing their cause. Me? I got no one but myself. In the twenty-five years that I've been an adult, I've changed jobs about fifteen times. They've had job security for how many decades?
The answer is, go get another job.
I'll be the first to say that no one likes that answer to be sure... but most of the harsh answers in this life aren't supposed to be "liked".
And if the people in that town didn't have such a slavish dependence on building and selling automobiles, wouldn't the workers in those factories be in a better position to get another job right now?
I mean, are these people really pissing and moaning, because they don't get to stand on an assembly line, and make thirty dollars an hour anymore?
Please... give me a break. - chugatussin, on 03/31/2009, -3/+13can I haz corvette
- jhamer, on 03/31/2009, -0/+8I have an 01. Aside from the bland interior it is a very good car and very reliable with 104k miles so far. Avg 22-24mpg overall (30 hwy). I think it gets a bad wrap because of the interior and the the simple engineering (leaf springs and pushrods). I don't really know what is bad about the pushrod engine anyway. It makes for a smaller overall engine with less rotating mass; it just doesn't breathe as good I guess.
- Chirp08, on 03/31/2009, -0/+8It's been out, for awhile.
- kaptainchump, on 03/31/2009, -0/+6Ford GT?
- Thud, on 03/31/2009, -0/+6It's a very common misconception that pushrods are "old technology." Today's pushrod design can be traced back to 1949 at the earliest (Oldsmobile's V8) while OHC designs date back to the early 20th century.
Generally pushrod engines can't rev as high but a V8 with a broad, flat torque curve can make up for that with the right gearing. Pushrod designs have a few advantages: fewer moving parts, lighter weight and smaller block for the same displacement.
I used to have a 2002 Z06 which got 28mpg on the highway, a couple mpg less than the coupe/convertibles due to a slightly taller gear ratio. - unclefire, on 03/31/2009, -0/+6Viper??
btw- I had the impression that Vettes handle pretty darn well. And they're a huge bang for the buck comparatively speaking.
They've held their own against other cars in racing. - Zervaman, on 03/31/2009, -0/+6A C6 Z06 with leaf springs managed a 7:42.99 Nurburging lap time...

built by Ford Motor Company from 2003 to 2006 - NickLee808, on 03/31/2009, -4/+8As long as they don't stop production of it entirely and don't raise the price, I'll wait for mine.
- xdre, on 03/31/2009, -0/+4What Top Gear forgot to mention is that the leaf spring is transversely mounted and thus an innovative way to have an IRS setup.
- AxsToro, on 03/31/2009, -2/+6What do you mean? Douchebags drive BMWs and Hummers
- inactive, on 03/31/2009, -3/+7at least my corvettes warranty is backed by the socialist government
- jsffive, on 03/31/2009, -0/+4Tell me about it. I've been out of work for three months, but I don't have the government trying to shore up any of the businesses that I have the expertise to work in. And I'm not sure I would want them to.
You see, MY particular job ware is apparently "small enough to fail".
It would be wrong for me to rob the taxpayers in order to get some personal job security. Why is it right for the auto makers to do the same?
GM hasn't made any money from the selling of automobiles in about a decade, largely due to the burden of their labor contracts. What they HAVE made their money from, is FINANCING those sales. The answer is: make a better car, and sell it for a cheaper price than the imports, and you will stay competitive. If you can't, then sell off the business to someone who is not encumbered with labor contracts, and they WILL make a better and cheaper car.
And don't believe the lip service that they are paying to electric cars either. Electric cars, comparatively speaking, are virtually MAINTENANCE FREE... You switch 90% of the American car fleet over to a virtually maintenance free automobile, and we will be sitting here again, talking about bailing out the AUTO PARTS DEALERS!
If we had taken the same position about saving jobs a hundred years ago, we would still be using horse and buggies.
Let them fail! Something else will come along. - JacksonYaya, on 03/31/2009, -1/+3Corvettes for war vets!

I used to own a 99 C5 that I bought new, just sold it off about 6 months ago. Talk about a fun car and it handled like a dream! I drove it on some long road trips quite a few times and it was very comfortable. As far as bias and presumption Corvettes and their owners, I was not stupid enough to let that stop me from owning one. - anotherjack, on 03/31/2009, -2/+4Speed boats, caviar and eyebrow waxing are also in low demand for some reason.
- jsffive, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2I'm not sure that I would want to use a fiberglass plow.
- inactive, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1Driven an LS2 Corvette Convertible and it is NOT a rattling piece of *****. The interior is much nicer than the media makes it out to be, the ride feels solid and it is a real blast to drive.
- howdareyou, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1It's unfortunate that the majority of douches drive BMWs because they truly are the greatest driving machines. I do think douche bags are slowly shifting over to Audis now.
- diggitalism, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1touche. i should have said "affordable american muscle."
- stevelectric, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1reiner- Corvettes used to be attainable when they cost double the price of the Mustangs and Chargers, now they run $100,000! There are electric cars available that are fast and cost a lot less, and more are being readied for poduction:

- knowitman, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1BMWs, Lexus's, Infinities, Mercades... I could keep going on.
- ExSlashdotter, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1You know, i honestly thought the same thing until i rode in a Z06.
- VAXcat, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1 Yah, I'd take the classic 1965375 hp 327ci, the 1963 split window coupe, or any 427 Corvette, especially the ZL-1 over any Corvette made after 1970.
- jkiriaka, on 03/31/2009, -1/+2“We shall beat our CORVETTES into plowshares”
- pinchduck, on 03/31/2009, -1/+2Buick tops Toyota in quality. The Corvette is a pretty awesome car. I don't think you know what the hell you're talking about. Whether or not they get a decent ROI from the Corvette is another story. If they don't, shut it down. If they do, then keep cranking it out. If GM can't turn a profit, shut it down. If it can, then let it's shareholders keep it afloat until it's profitable.
- moose26, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1If GM does indeed file for bankruptcy to allow for a restructuring... what will happen with their top bass and their relation to the Unions. Will they finally be free of alot of their dead weight, or will it be back to business as usual with a fresh image spin for the public?
- 91z4me, on 03/31/2009, -1/+2Enlefo, yeah because Toyota makes such an awesome competitor to the Corvette. But for the life of me I can't recall what it is...
- Enlefo, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1I almost wrote about how the vette and the viper are the only two american cars I like... but it got a bit rambleish.
- anotherjack, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1Blame it on the typical inconsiderate sports car driver. Yes, you can dive through hair thin cracks in the traffic with your fast car. But to us, the 65 mph crowd, we see a very intrusive car almost killing us with no warning. It pops into existence from nowhere, its really low to the ground, and we barely see it, and it's really close and moving unpredictably. It's like being near a hornet. You think everybody else is a plodding donkey and you can just play around next to us like we are frozen in time. But this is not just true for Corvettes. It is true for any sports car.
- Amazetbm, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1Man that's messed up. The Corvette is one of the few consitantly impressive cars that GM has put out.
- Enlefo, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1VW's are ***** IMO, and american cars have come a long way. I still don't think they hold a candle to nissan, honda, toyota, bmw or merc.
- Enlefo, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1The vette is an awesome car, and silly toyota has not has a sports car for some time. The supra was an awesome competitor to the vette... Price wise for 500hp the c6 z06 is a hell of a deal. All this being said... it still has the american company POS problems like poor build quality on interior parts and such.
- unclefire, on 03/31/2009, -0/+0Type of car driven does not necessarily predict doucebag factor.
I've seen plenty of douche-bags driving massively lifted 4x4 pick ups. - unclefire, on 03/31/2009, -0/+0Most objective sources show that American cars are pretty much on par with most fgn. cars these days.
BMW and Mercedes have had their share of problems in the past too. VW? Come on, many model years have had alot of crap. - unclefire, on 03/31/2009, -0/+0FTA: "We are not hardly running."
What? This is the financial secretary of the union local. I would have expected better english than that. Sheesh. - TigerStar337, on 03/31/2009, -1/+1Oh, the huge manatee!
- howdareyou, on 03/31/2009, -4/+3If you're only interested in going down a straight than a Corvette is just fine. If you'd like to try going around corners forget about anything American. Leaf springs on a top of the line Vette, are you kidding?
- 91z4me, on 03/31/2009, -2/+1You're and idiot who has obviously never driven a Corvette that wasn't 10 years old and completely ragged out. Just do yourself a favor next time and be quite while the adults talk.
- ConcernedCanuck, on 03/31/2009, -4/+2Ahh but its not GM doing any stealing... Its yer Government saying "lets see what I can give to all my friends before the idiots realize there's some big trouble coming? "
