Better Gas Mileage as an Economic Stimulus
mpgomatic.com — Lets go out on a limb and propose something so obvious that it sounds crazy … that better gas mileage can and should be part and parcel of any economic stimulus package. It’s well past time we end our reliance on foreign oil ...

- mediablab, on 02/22/2008, -1/+4A tax rebate for driving less would have more impact. ;)
- allaboutdatiki, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3But wait ... don't we already get that ... sort of?
- mediablab, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1Sure you pay less tax at the pump when you pump less gas, but nobody looks at it that way. It's the same with cigarettes, nobody thinks about the percentage of tax built into the price.

- iraq, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4How about taxing the asses that are artificially inflating the price of oil for profitable gain? There's a solution I won't lose sleep over.
- allaboutdatiki, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3There's no doubt that price manipulation is to blame for a great deal of our pain. But that having been said, gas is still much less expensive here in America than it is in Europe. The big difference is that the expensive European fuel is due largely to taxes. If we were taxed at the same rate, we'd be driving the same cars.
- semifamous, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1The cost of gas is still such that it would take drastic changes in your mileage or driving habits to offset the cost of changing from an older to a newer car. The government had long provided subsidies and tax credits for hybrids. It would be nice to see the same offered for the high MPG diesels rumored to be premiering from a few manufacturers on their 2009 models.
- allaboutdatiki, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1Everyone's situation is different. If someone is driving a vehicle that delivers 15 miles per gallon and they switch to a vehicle that averages 30 MPG, it cuts the fuel costs in half. At $3.25 per gallon and 20,000 miles per year, this equals $2,180 in savings. Divide that by 12 and it can substantially offset those new car payments.
- jflowers45, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Seems like a solid argument ... and I think we would all agree that it's time to get away from reliance on foreign oil.
