- Jabrams2, on 11/20/2008, -2/+31I mean, the Tesla is probably 10 times better looking than this in my opinion, but at least other companies are thinking along these lines. I'll take it as a step in the right direction.
- MarvinZuzarte, on 11/20/2008, -0/+12This car is based on the Lotus Europa S, so also designed by Lotus.
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -1/+9My pickup runs on vegetable oil but could easily burn hempseed oil as well.
- StigNordas, on 11/20/2008, -1/+9I so can't wait for 10 years from now.
- astrozombie1, on 11/20/2008, -3/+10Maybe someone needs to develop a hydrogen/electric/hydraulic hybrid. Then we will have the distance, the speed, and the reliability. If only, if only cars could run off of something clean like Hemp oil... The world needs to open its eyes sometimes..
- Jabrams2, on 11/20/2008, -1/+8lol fine. Compromise. 5x better looking. but also, in the article they say "But will the Dodge EV see the production light of day? It looks likely, perhaps as early as 2010." So it looks like there's at least a shot
- thumbwar, on 11/20/2008, -1/+8Oooooooohhhh! Want One!
- LilPuke, on 11/20/2008, -1/+7The big problem is that this is still a concept. Tesla is a reality, albeit an expensive one. I also agree with Jabrams2, well maybe not 10x worth.
- diggit83, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Since always......they have been a driving force in race engineering since the '60s
- merrifie, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5I'd rather have a White Zombie
http://www.opb.org/programs/ofg/videos/view/56-Ele ... - socialpyramid, on 11/20/2008, -2/+5that's because the Tesla body was designed by Lotus
- fredrockbluff, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3that car is ***** awesome.
- 48snickers, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3I like Lotus' model. They are good at chassis, and all they do is design and build the best chassis possible (elise/exige/europa). They are neither responsible for the gasoline (Rover, Toyota) nor the electric (Tesla/Chrysler) power plants being stuck into their cars. I wonder how long until other manufactures catch on to that model, considering how difficult it must be to have your hands in the research and development of such a diverse number of power plants that may or may not be the engine choice of the future. Obviously, this is already the norm for other areas, like Microsoft's partnership in car electronics, and the many audio companies that engineer the sound systems on higher end automobiles.
- raw10, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4Too bad they didn't have the foresight to develop this a few years ago, and deploy the tech into their line of compacts, minivans, and SUVs. Then they might not need to be bailed out. That said, I'd feel a lot more comfortable about "bailing out" the U.S. auto industry if they were truly committed to cars like this. Instead, the EV is just the exception to the gas-guzzling rule.
- KittySpark1es, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3If they MUST bailout the auto industry with $25 billion, I'd love to see a large chunk of that to go to innovative up and comers like Tesla rather than GM who has had a history of poor business practices.
Let's encourage newer more innovative companies rather keeping the bad ones on life support. - skintigh, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Hydrogen is great unless you crunch the numbers and find out it takes more fossil fuels to make the hydrogen than just running a car on gas. Then there's the minor problem of needing to build a brand-new hydrogen infrastructure for the entire country.
Hydrogen is like the world's least efficient, leakiest battery. - Solstice, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2As of September 30th, Tesla had delivered 30 cars - and they may never deliver all of the ones that they've taken deposits for. They're almost out of cash.
So, no - Tesla's not really a reality. Try and go to one of their two dealerships and drive one away. You can't - even if you pull up with a briefcase full of cash. - HeyBob, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2I'd like to see a Nascar or Indy 500 race with just electric cars - maybe a course with real world simulation: on & off ramps, straight aways, different speed limits, and starting stopping every lap - see how far each car can go.
- rlittle66, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2I believe the main reason the green vehicles are so expensive is that the oil companies are not willing to put money into that part of the industry. It (the oil companies) does not benefit from them and they have no way to rape our wallets.
- markymark1000, on 11/20/2008, -3/+5Dodge is going to be long, long gone before this becomes a reality. Too bad though, would be nice for the Tesla to have some competition to keep them on their toes.
- adamk0310, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Love Road & Track, but they need to make that ampersand their favicon already.
- TheCack, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Can't wait to finance the car and then have Dodge take them away, hide them and then crush the technology!
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1You, maam, are a retard.
The Tesla is a $100,000+ automobile. GM produces more cars in 1 hour than the Tesla Motor Company will produce in 5 years.
So you support a handout go to an "innovative" company that provides goods for ultra-rich individuals who can drop $100 on an automobile? Because that's exactly what you said. They produce cars for the rich. End of story. - LAhazmat, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1See WE DO hybrids - - - - - NOW CAN WE HAVE THE 25 Billion?
- berational, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Maybe we'll see it if they don't go out of business first...duho!
This car is the Tesla...Same chasis, same battery type. - inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1The Tesla roadster is the only car made by this company at this time. If you want cars that are economically viable you are going to want cars that are not fully electric because nobody wants to get stranded somewhere without an outlet. Either way, batteries create a whole new problem and that isn't very good for the environment either.
Battery powered cars will not tow boats to lakes, will not tow heavy campers, and will not tow other vehicles (as hobbyists often move their classics or show cars).
Tesla is not an economic model to have the federal government invest in. The federal government shouldn't be investing in ANYTHING.
Electric cars, hybrids are gimmicks so far. And with gas dropping back down into the $1.50-$2.00 range...expect them to take a backseat once again...at least until the dummycrats start imposing ridiculous taxes on ***** everything.
And you are a retard if you believe investing in that company is a wise move. Deregulating the auto industry, thus allowing imports from Europe, would cost $0 from taxpayer pockets and put cars on the road capable of getting 60 MPG+.
Buy a Ford Fiesta or the next generation Aveo... it may only get 50-60MPG but with the $85,000 you'll save over a Tesla...you'll be driving around the world a few times. - KittySpark1es, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1The Tesla Roadster is a $100,000 automobile. Tesla is the company. The expensive roadster is or could be the beginning of a future of fully electric cars. I don't propose that we bail out any automotive company. All I'm saying is that if they're going to spend $25 billion on a bailout that some of the more innovative companies who have had a better business model see some of that too.
Do you really think that throwing a large amount of money is going to turn things around? Who's to say they're not just going to burn through it and ask for some more money?
p.s. - that retard comment is really classy, maam. - LowFuel, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Was the title sarcastic on purpose?
- Supergliding, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Personally, I think Chrysler is ahead of GM in the electric car market... but ran across this today... WTF ??? This is proof that American car manufacturers shouldn't be allowed to survive !!! 1978 for Christ sake... who bought them out???
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2245729493 ... - krnldmp, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Let the games begin.
- FrankTheTank17, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Lightning GT is another good one:
http://www.lightningcarcompany.co.uk/ - gwolf, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Expense is the only problem. Until they can produce these cars cheaply they will never, ever catch on. I would buy an electric in the 20k range in a second, even with the battery limitations and range issues because it would be a great commuter. At 40k I might as well get a German super car, it will cost me the same.
I wouldn't mind my government using my money to push these technologies forward nearly as much as I would mind bailing out GM so they can keep making the same mistakes. - jumpjet701, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Its still not practical at $100k price tag.
- vicsvenge, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1lol lets see.... it's built like a tesla. has the same frame as a tesla... probably going to have the same parts as a tesla.... hmmmmm sounds like a tesla to me.
Chrysler is SOOOO original. Jesus christ chysler design a car that we can buy for *****. The Challenger is sweet but nobody wants to drive a 250hp 4500lb rearwheel drive coupe. Everyone wants to drive a 400+hp 4500 rwd coupe, but nobody can pay for it. Blah! - mantis108, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Two words: Fisker Karma.
- bjs3171, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1So they're going with pretty much the exact same concept as the Tesla, with the same price tag, but the Tesla is out already, and had been under development for years. And by the time this is released, the Tesla will be even better. Why, if I were gonna spend 100K would I not buy the Tesla? Why wouldn't they atleast take Tesla's lead, and build the more mainsteam, full back seat version of that car? One that people can afford, and therefore be likely to actually help the environment.
- bodaciousllama, on 11/20/2008, -0/+0I'd prefer a Fisker Karma
http://www.fiskerautomotive.com/ - doublefelix, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Too bad the thing looks like a ***** wasp.
- KayakJim, on 11/21/2008, -0/+0Until an electric car is mass produced that can carry a typical family of 5 along with some groceries at an affordable price, this market will continue to be a niche. Plus the car companies will lose a *ton* of profits from not doing oil changes and other typical routine high-profit maintenance services.
- grexeo, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Forget fuel cells. The new wave of batteries take 10 minutes to charge to 90% capacity.
- derekmas10, on 11/20/2008, -1/+1There was a span of about six months back in 1979 when Lotus was considered cool, then rapidly forgotten while people got distracted making "Skylab Target" signs and putting them on their asses.
- Neiva, on 11/20/2008, -2/+2the government needs to not let major corporation have so much power and control over the industry, we would have had better technologies and products if it wasn't because of them.
i just want electric car so we don't have to buy gas anymore.
have you seen "what happened to the electric car?"
its a documentary about gm made electric car but then realized what would it do to the gas industry and then destroyed it.
we now have electric car that are sold in California called Tesla Roadster. www.teslamotors.com - inactive, on 11/20/2008, -2/+2Yeah, I remember that one white Lotus Esprit in that Bond movie. That was pretty much it.
- HenryLegge, on 11/20/2008, -3/+1Yes, but i would only class a company such as ferrari legendary. Lotus were and remain a small British company and are only now really trying to become international with their plans for the new Evora.
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -7/+520?? Tesla roadster = $109000, 0-60 MPH in 4 seconds, top speed 130.
20?? Dodge's EV sportscar = $??????, 0-60 MPH in less than 5 seconds, top speed "over 120"
2009 Corvette ZR1 = $104,820. 0-60 MPH 3.4 seconds, top speed "over 200".
I'll take the ZR1. If you are dropping 100K on a car, I don't think gasoline prices are going to mean *****. Environment? Please. - jesusface, on 11/20/2008, -3/+1I can haz?:)

we are actually set back technology and economy wise because of these big major player in the market industry. they're too greedy to let the good technology ruin their business. - HenryLegge, on 11/20/2008, -5/+1Since when were Lotus legendary?
