- WordsnCollision, on 06/23/2008, -0/+76This is bad news for the makers of Truck Nuts...
- staxofmax, on 06/23/2008, -6/+42Good.
And it's about time they release their European models in the US. I have no idea why US auto manufacturers have traditionally sold their awesome models overseas, and leave Americans with their craptacular models. - SVOboy, on 06/23/2008, -1/+31While I agree that trucks serve a purpose, I don't think the majority of trucks sold are used to capacity. Meaning, I think that they are either not used or that they are sold when a smaller truck or a part time rental would easily do.
My family owns a farm and we have had the same F250 for over 25 years, and it just worked hard and is beaten to hell. However, I rarely see trucks like the f150 towing anything or scratched up like they've actually carried a load of anything. Mehbe that person tows their boat to and from the marina once a year, but that's not a good reason to daily drive a pickup, and I think that's being reflected in sales. - ironeus, on 08/01/2008, -11/+30I don't think consumers purchased pickup trucks such as Ford's F150 just because gas prices were reasonable. The trucks serve a purpose for many commercial and private industries. This shakeup in the auto industry will help create a better, stronger line of trucks with a better product for the end-consumer.
- Destrucci, on 06/23/2008, -0/+15Ford - Built Ford Tough
Main motto here in the states. - ausfahrt, on 06/23/2008, -1/+15Although i am glad the public figured it out and stopped buying the gas guzzlers, Ford did not lack any sense in this matter. It was the number on selling vehicle in the US after all, and we can't expect any company to neglect their best seller. In this case it was the public that had the sense beaten into their thick skulls.
- blackhappy, on 06/23/2008, -1/+15No kidding, the european ford focus is a hell of a lot cooler looking then the US version. So is the Honda Civic. Saturn did bring over the Astra, known as Vauxhall in the UK and Opel in Europe.
- iamconanobrien, on 06/23/2008, -3/+16Has anyone seen's Ford's stock? It tanked like there was no tomorrow today.
- MacEnvy, on 06/23/2008, -8/+20The F-150 was the best-selling vehicle for 30 years. It's now beaten by several cars. You can't tell me that gas prices have nothing to do with it.
- scrtyfrk, on 06/23/2008, -2/+13Could it be because Americans don't care as much about MPG as they do about horsepower and looking good rather than utility?
The SUV is the greatest example of this. Poor MPG and none of the utility they should have. - MacEnvy, on 06/23/2008, -0/+10*insolvency
- bob_the_alien, on 06/23/2008, -0/+10Yeah, agreed, I own an 97 F150, and it's beat all to hell, but I've used it as a work truck for many years now, and because, it's just keeps going, is one of the reasons it's became the best selling vehicle, I mean if they can keep on going under those conditions shouldn't they keep on going under daily driver conditions. But it makes since with gas prices going up, ppl that don't need a work truck, are going to other vehicles.
Actually even in my work, I'm switched to a small V6 SUV, and have parked the F150. I only drive the F150 when I need to haul heavy loads, and stick to the small SUV the rest of the time, I can get all my tools in it, and haul small amounts of materials which is enough for a good majority of the jobs, and I've went from 280 dollars a week in gas, to like 120 dollars, just make good business since, as well. - inactive, on 06/23/2008, -2/+11We need hybrid trucks I am a carpenter and have to drive my F-150 that gets 15mpg loaded it get about 8mpg.
- spidoman, on 06/24/2008, -0/+9It means that most hybrid owners don't drive their vehicles in the most economical matter.
Kinda like top gear showed last night. BMW M3 got better gas mileage than a Prius when driving rather aggressively. - god-awful, on 06/23/2008, -2/+11What ever happened to the 60 mpg hydraulic hybrid F150 idea?
http://www.autoblog.com/2006/02/14/ford-f-150-to-d ... - WhiskeyWrites, on 06/24/2008, -0/+9They aren't completely pointless, they still function as a pick-up truck, but much like SUVs they have been slowly sliding into a family/luxury mode. I am hoping that if the major share of buyers for these vehicles becomes people who need them for utility then the manufacturers will begin to make them with utility in mind again.
- crapmatic, on 06/24/2008, -1/+9When I lived in Oklahoma:
"Oklahoma Knows Ford's The Best"
Then we moved to Texas and it was:
"God Bless Texas" (with Ford logo)
I have never seen any advertising campaign built so heavily on emotional appeals to provincialism as Ford's garbage. - HanSolo69, on 06/24/2008, -2/+10I believe it is Truck Nutz. You can't tell how extreme they are unless you have the 'z'.
- inactive, on 06/23/2008, -4/+12My city (Calgary) is ***** FULL of pickup trucks.
Ford - Built for life in Canada
that's on all the ads here. I don't know what kind of lies are on your television advertisements - WhiskeyWrites, on 06/24/2008, -1/+8"In this case it was the public that had the sense beaten into their thick skulls."
Absolutely. It would have been a horrible decision by Ford to stop selling a vehicle that was in such high demand. Demand is now shifting towards more fuel efficient vehicles, and I can guess that Ford will be trying very hard in that area to make up for the loss of sales on the F-150. - kd420, on 06/23/2008, -3/+10Best selling vehicle in the states? That's surprising, since most middle class families wouldn't need a truck, or at least that's what I thought. Then again, my friend owns one, and I'd say 90% of the reason is because of how it looks.
- gfxlonghorn, on 06/23/2008, -2/+8What the hell does that mean?
- zephyr42, on 06/24/2008, -0/+6Is it though? think of how many commercial companies need vast fleets of trucks that these companies buy in mass quantities.
- ELWOOD_BLUES, on 06/24/2008, -3/+9Uh... Dummy. Ford owns Mazda.
- dusanmal, on 06/24/2008, -0/+6Dear USA carpenter, please notice that most European and Asian carpenter (and other trades) trucks are not hybrid yet they have almost twice the fuel efficiency. Tricks: 1) diesel 2) 80-100 hp. They can do everything American 5 ton truck can that is relevant to the work. What they won't do in exchange for 25+mpg? Go faster than 70 mph or accelerate in sub 15 seconds to 60 mph.
- blackopsmanners, on 06/23/2008, -2/+8This is really bad for those that truly need a truck for work or whatever. But maybe it's a good thing that people are starting to by cars that get better gas milage. It's time to stop sending billions to an area of the world that hates us.
- wrenchone, on 06/24/2008, -1/+7Thank you. I love how people preach the death of the American auto companies like it would be a good thing. 1 out of every 10 jobs in the country is related to the auto industry. If Ford of GM were to truly go belly up, the impact would be huge.
- wrenchone, on 06/24/2008, -0/+6Buy a Diesel truck. I promise it won't smell and spew out black exhaust and you'll get much better mpgs.
- ShempRider, on 06/23/2008, -2/+8I've seen ads for new 2008 F-150s as low as $12999 and they're not moving off the lots. Compound this with mortgaging their factories and their blue oval, Ford's hurting. It's going to take a lot more than another Escort to get them out of this mess.
- drastik21, on 06/23/2008, -3/+9Yeah try to fit some lumber in your Prius, then we'll see who's crying
- blackhappy, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5True, I don't see Americans buying to many 1.4 liter engines
- evilbob333, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5New cars tend to be more fuel efficient?
- bjornski, on 06/24/2008, -3/+8Actually, those Rangers suck.
Old roomie got hooked into one because of a delivery job he had. Worst piece of ***** vehicle either of us have ever driven. Cheap, uncomfortable, all plastic, lose your top speed when it rains because of lack of power. The complaints could go on.
They're pieces of *****. - ryansmith18, on 06/24/2008, -1/+6Hell, you wanna know why I bought my F150?
Because I'm ***** FAT. I'm HUGE. 300lbs. A sedan just won't cut it. - Dustmuffins, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4Read what he said again.
"I don't think consumers purchased pickup trucks such as Ford's F150 JUST because gas prices were reasonable."
He's not saying that gas prices had nothing to do with it. - idavidtang, on 06/23/2008, -2/+6You probably misread the title, let alone not reading the article itself.
- JHB800, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4They're still sales though, and most of them were made through the regular Ford sales channels.
- inactive, on 06/23/2008, -17/+21It's about time that Ford had some sense beat into it's thick skull. Maybe facing total solvency and ruin will coerce them into being responsible.
- oveedrx, on 06/23/2008, -3/+7I doubt everyone who is buying the trucks use them for anything other then using the bed or towing something once in a blue moon, people like them cause they compensate for something. They're also very nice looking, and we all know people don't buy vehicles for looks. The people who are planning on becoming a said person above are thinking about the gas prices, and acting accordingly. The people who actually need them and USE them on a daily basis are still going to buy trucks.. Your not going be able to haul construction material in a prius.
- BinaryFragger, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4You have to hand it to them, though, automakers are marketing geniuses. They managed to sell millions of Sport Utility Vehicles that are neither sporty or useful.
Before I get the obligatory 'but I actually NEED a truck' response, I know that some trucks do have unique abilities (such as the Jeep Wrangler's legendary offroad capabilities) but most trucks never leave the pavement or tow a trailer.
After all, going offroad might dirty the 22in chrome rims. - publiclurker, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4Funny, I've owned a home for almost 10 years and never once considered buying a truck. For the difference in gas I can use the home improvement/u-haul rentals quite a bit. Now my parent have a farm, and that's another matter.
- Setari, on 06/24/2008, -3/+6Here in the southern US, the truck and SUV markets seem to be thriving, blissfully ignorant of the whole "gas price" situation.
- inactive, on 06/24/2008, -2/+5$4 A gallon...
I'm told a US gallon is 3.9 Litres not 4.5..
$0.97/L, which equals...
€0.63/L, "gas" or petrol In Ireland is...
€1.30/L
If you really think $4 is massively expensive, you don't appreciate just how little you pay compared to most of the world. Well other than those "evil" Venezuelans.
I know you don't have decent public services or universal healthcare, because "that's wrong", why should people join together to pay for stuff that benefits all of society...
But in Europe we don't all rely on public transport as you seem to think, in fact public transport sucks in Ireland and the UK and even in continental europe it's practical in only the big cities and many people still prefer cars.
But maybe you should try driving relatively normal size cars that don't consume stupidly large amounts of fuel. If that threatens your manhood, get a better manhood that can stand up to criticisms and, well man up. - inactive, on 06/23/2008, -3/+6The price of gas has a lot to say on people driving trucks...
- elTito, on 06/24/2008, -0/+31) We have hybrid trucks
2) My grandfather was a cabinet-maker for 50+ years, worked (literally) until the day he died and drove a Toyota Tacoma for the last 6 or 7 years. Maybe you ought to re-think what it is you NEED as opposed to what it is you DESIRE. - travisMarc, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3"God Bless Texas" is usually preceded by some country dude singing, "Foooord is tha best in Taexas!"
- JHB800, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3Actually, they are better than any other trucks on the market. Why do you think it Toyota three generations to figure out how to build a proper truck, while Ford, GM, and Dodge were all eating their lunch in that part of the market.
- ELWOOD_BLUES, on 06/24/2008, -4/+7Well, if Ford goes down, the US Economy will follow 3 and 1/2 minutes later. If the US Economy goes down so will the financial systems of every major nation on the planet. You are looking at another Great Depression. And it took a World War to get us out of the Great Depression. WWII makes the War on Terror look like a training exercise.
When the US Economy sneezes the rest of the world catches a cold. - Gimpyfuzznut, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3LOL @ "God Bless Texas". I guess that really is the way to convince someone to buy a truck in Texas.
- zephyr42, on 06/24/2008, -0/+3Gas prices are the reason my sister and her husband sold their 2007 F-150
