- Abomonog, on 07/27/2008, -14/+39The lesson here: If you want to save on your insurance premiums you have to buy a gas guzzling SUV.
That's ***** up. - inactive, on 07/27/2008, -2/+27The least expensive car to insure is a Ford 500 (sedan) and the most expensive car to insure is a Cadillac Escalade (SUV). Many of the small cars on the expensive list are cars that poorer people and young adults, who are generally more reckless and who tend to live in higher crime and more heavily trafficed areas, would tend to buy. This list makes perfect sense.
- lester1024, on 07/28/2008, -3/+21Awesome, my RSX-S is number 6. Thanks to spoiled 16y/o Fast and furious fan boys crashing their *****.
- gtluke, on 07/28/2008, -7/+22for picking up men in
- Spuy767, on 07/28/2008, -1/+15People who think they're gangsta as ***** buy SUV's and kids buy the ricer, so it makes sense that those two would be top of the list. I'm no geneticist, but I get the feeling when I'm driving down I-85 that some people are genetically pre-disposed to being ***** drivers. It's like they don't even get it, like the subtle art of piloting a two ton missle eludes them. It's no wonder my goddamn insurance costs so much, because just like my health insurance, I'm subsidiing some *****-dick's rate who probably shouldn't even be allowed to drive.
- sphoony, on 07/28/2008, -2/+15Did you see this list that is a little further down on the page?
============
The top five linked to highest dollar damages to other cars, according to the institute, are as follows.
Hummer H2 SUT 4dr 4WD
Hummer H3 4dr 4WD
Hummer H2 4dr 4WD
Dodge Ram 2500 mega cab 4WD
Toyota Highlander Hybrid 4dr
"They're big, heavy vehicles that tend to inflict a lot of damage on what they hit," says Rader. See the top 10 list.

I want to buy a hummer and enter a demolition derby. I bet I'd kick ass! - jp3550, on 07/28/2008, -3/+12Let me guess, you just turned 17?
- williambeutler, on 07/28/2008, -0/+9Not the most expensive for you, the most expensive for them. I assume the McLaren F-1 that I own in my imagination would cost a fair bit more than an Escalade.
- alexra, on 07/27/2008, -5/+13noticed, that foriegn cars cost more to insure than american cars
- stk198323, on 07/28/2008, -0/+8Hum actually if you check carefully, it is written car's that cost the most for insurance companies, not for yourself!
Believe me, if you would buy a Lamborghini murcielago it would cost a lot more to insure then a Cadillac escalade! - Altotus, on 07/28/2008, -0/+8There's no such law in my state. A certain level of insurance is absolutely mandatory.
- lester1024, on 07/28/2008, -1/+930, but the older RSX's are now cheap enough for parents to buy their kids to crash.
- gtluke, on 07/28/2008, -1/+8because they are driven by kids that crash them and they are expensive to fix.
and they are typically smaller and rack up your hospital bills the most. - gtluke, on 07/28/2008, -1/+7its like a mating call, to gay men
- ibeetle, on 07/28/2008, -1/+7You telling me it is more expensive to insure a Chevy Cobalt than a Porsche 911 twin turbo?
As a former owner of a Beetle convertible with a turbo engine I know for a fact that it was more expensive than half the cars on that most expensive list to insure.
And what is with the death trap known as the Ford Explorer is cheaper to insure than the Jetta or Accord. Some of the safest (if not the safest) cars in their class. - inactive, on 07/28/2008, -0/+5Tiburon..because it might suddenly fall apart while driving it.
- eggsovereasy, on 07/28/2008, -0/+5Mine goes down... you should switch companies or call your agent.
- nesagwa, on 07/28/2008, -1/+6You figured out how insurance works.
Congrats. - breadfred, on 07/28/2008, -0/+5Ah... common misconceptions on car insurance. If you think the car you drive is the sole influence on your premium, think again. Depending on where you live, your insurance premium can be more then double. Also things such as occupation, marital status, gender, age, driving experience, claims history and conviction history play a role. In general, small hatchbacks with a low engine capacity and the least possibility to damage other cars are cheapest to insure. I should know, I have been in insurance for 6 years now.
- gtluke, on 07/28/2008, -0/+5you can do it in NJ, but its the stupidest think anyone can do. if you can afford a lambo and you crash it, someone is going to sue the ever living crap out of you. at least an insurance company will provide basic lawyers and possibly a million dollars in protection. you do not want them going right at your bank account if you have that much money.
they can go after mine though, i got nothing :) - RudeTurnip, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4Golf clap...
- Albumen, on 07/28/2008, -2/+6Check your grammar!
It's most ugliestest - sweetfeld28, on 07/28/2008, -1/+5I can't believe that my Scion tC is #5 on the most expensive list. I think that is BS. My insurance payment is less now, than when i had a Chevy Cavalier Z24 as my first car.
And another thing, why is it that 8 of the 10 are sport compacts, and yet have the highest insurance supposedly? - dema, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4> As a former owner of a Beetle convertible with a turbo engine I know for a fact that it was more expensive than half the cars on that most expensive list to insure.
As a current owner of a GTI turbo I agree, lol ): - brstilson, on 07/28/2008, -0/+4You may not plan on wrecking, but you can't guarantee that for everyone else on the road.
I drove around with liability only, until some ***** without insurance ran a red light, smacked into my front at 55 mph and totaled my car. I couldn't even get the $500 mini-tor because my insurance company had to take him to court to get it...they never did. At least I got the satisfaction that he was far more screwed than I was. His car was damaged badly as well, the entire side was caved in. The best part? He had gotten the car just one month before. When my insurance agent told me he didn't have insurance when he hit me, I realized he had just gotten it so he could buy the car, then probably dropped it soon after. At least my car was paid off. There was no way his wasn't totaled and now he had years of loan payments on a car he couldn't drive to look forward to.
Since then I've insisted on comprehensive and collision coverage. Yeah, it can cost a lot, but you can't plan on everybody else on the road not being - inactive, on 07/28/2008, -1/+5Hey, 4chan's back up, gtfo.
- AdamFromMyspace, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3Yep.. insurance in the midwest is cheap as hell. Liability for my '95 3000GT is under $45/mo
- MacEnvy, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3@brstilson
That's not entirely true. Most "compact SUVs" are built on midsize car platforms, and most "fullsize SUVs" are built on truck platforms. Crossovers are also built on car platforms, but to say that all SUVs are built on truck platforms is incorrect.
As an example, the Ford Escape is built on the Mazda 626 sedan platform. The original Rav4 was built on the Corolla platform (now has its own platform). The only confusion comes now, since the vehicles that used to be called "compact SUVs" are being branded as crossovers, despite being the same vehicles. This is a branding issue, not a substantive one. - brstilson, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3"My insurance payment is less now, than when i had a Chevy Cavalier Z24 as my first car. "
Could it be that your lower premiums just might have more to do with your age more than what car you drive? Do you even have the same insurance company? They can be worlds apart. Geico quotes me $5,000 a year while State Farm offers me $900 a year. Every company has a different formula based on their accident data.
When I was in my early 20's, I was paying more than $200 a month for full coverage on my car. Now, I'm 26 and only pay about $75 a month for the same coverage. - eggsovereasy, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3I have on 08 Wolfsburg Edition Jetta, which has the same power train as the GTI (2.0t, DSG 6 speed, the suspension isn't as good and it doesn't have all the options inside), but insurance company prices it like a normal Jetta.
- inactive, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3If you had insurance though, you could drive it like an idiot and get it replaced after you wreck it!
- brstilson, on 07/28/2008, -1/+4I think it's simpler than that. The styled "hip" cars are the ones young people gravitate toward. Age is the number one factor in insurance premiums. If you want cheap insurance, you're going to have to buy the boring, old person car like 4-door sedan or the minivan.
- ricksite, on 07/28/2008, -1/+4"gas guzzling SUV"? Granted the SUVs on the list don't get the best mileage possible but I wouldn't categorize them all as gas guzzling. There are a number of compact SUVs on the list and compact SUVs typically get mileage only a little worse than the car platform they are built on.
- inactive, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3Insurance is government sanctioned rape.
- Tabris, on 07/29/2008, -0/+2lester: Most policies are paid over 6-8 months. So he's only paying $200ish/mt more than you.
I lucked out. My policy was $4400 / yr with one accident and one ticket over 4 years....with a Honda Accord of all things. Then MA decided to "deregulate" and it dropped to 2 grand.
I'm jealous of my family in KS who pays $300/yr for full-blown coverage. - ricodued, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2This is one of the days I'm happy I have an RS wagon :)
- stk198323, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2every company will insure a murcielago, they don't have a choice from a legal point. If the car is approved by the government, no company has the right to refuse insuring it.
- pmrx, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2It depends. Mostly if you live in a no-fault state, where all property damage falls back on YOUR carrier. I'd really hate to see your car get totaled by some creep cruising around without any insurance. Likewise, I'd also hate to have you driving around without physical damage, period, because it means if you damage ANYONE's property (e.g., mail box), I'm likely going to have to file a lawsuit against you to get my compensation. Unless you are truly that altruistic, and own up to your damages. Even if you are, I'm guessing most people won't.
Face it: people driving without insurance drives the cost up for everyone. People filing false claims drives the cost up for everyone. My car insurance, which is full coverage, costs me about 5% to 6% of my car's total purchase price a year. YMMV, of course, but everyone thinks insurance is a rip-off until they need it. - Jwoey, on 07/28/2008, -1/+3You'd lose your winnings repairing your vehicle, but i guess that's obvious.
- stk198323, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2No I'm not wrong! Replacing a dent in a door on a murcielago would cost more then repairing both car's in a regular accident!
Chances of crashing a lambo are higher per miles then other kind of car's because a lot of people can't handle 500 hp engines.
And last but not least, do you know how many people would envy you? That makes a far greater chance of vandalism and believe me, the paint on a lambo cost a few thousand, tires are around 800$ each, not including the mag's... - gtluke, on 07/28/2008, -1/+3yeah the camry is the new buick

A little dated information. - PhillyMJS, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2The tC is a reasonably affordable car marketed to people in an age group that tends to think it is invincible, and drives accordingly. That's why it's pricey to insure.
- theforrester, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2What's funny is that the 2nd most expensive, the Subaru WRX and the 4th least expensive, the Subaru Outback are both available with the same 2.5L Turbo charged engine. Go figure!!
- fulibs, on 07/28/2008, -2/+4NO, I think the lesson here is to go back to school and learn how to read AND comprehend the article before you make some asinine comment.
- Teh1337Pirate, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2This list is so stupid, it should say either "most expensive american cars" or "most expensive common cars" I could think of 20 other cars off the top of my head that would top the list by several thousand dollars.
- breadfred, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2Here in the UK, credit history does not have an influence on your car insurance premium. Usually you can pay on a monthly basis, but they will then charge a set interest rate for the year. (Basically you take out a loan for a year). Defaulting on your monthly payments can result in cancellation of your insurance.
- inactive, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2You missed a big one, credit history.
- PrometheusBorn, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2Blechh... same for my WRX. And living in NY state doesn't help anything. I used to pay near $3000/year. It's down to under a grand now, though, that it's older and I'm older.
- pmrx, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2Yeah, can't do that in Michigan, either. You are required to have insurance on your vehicle at all times. Driving without insurance on your vehicle could result in suspension of license, heavy fees, and all of your license, registration, and tag fees will be tripled for three years.
With that said, Michigan also has "unlimited liability." What that means for us responsible drivers is that, in my case, I pay an extra $160 a year to pay for the damages jerks with no insurance cause. They usually call it "Catastrophic loss" on the dec pages. It gets worse if you own a motorcycle. I work in insurance, and it is very common to see the premium on a policy with one motorcycle insured, to be completely eclipsed by this fee assessed for idiots. -
