(The following is not contained in the article.)
The problem is that the general public has been suckered into thinking that the worldwide "peak oil" phenomenon is real. Its not the case, because the world has HUGE reserves of oil, particularly in the Americas. They easily dwarf what the Middle East currently has. The PROBLEM is that its considered "sour" crude oil. That means it COSTS more to refine. The overwhelming majority of oil in the Mideast is "light, sweet" quality crude oil. Its CHEAP to refine. What we are seeing now is a "peak" of CHEAP oil. We're not going to run out of available petroleum for at least another century, even given the world's rising consumption.
Another aspect of the "shortage" of oil is that its presumed that competition for oil resources will come from the 3rd world becoming developed. If you create an oil monopoly, you don't have to give access to developing nations for "cheap" oil, and they just don't develop. It'll really shut down our current capitalist model of economic growth.
"Global warming" will be a much more significant crisis that worrying about not being able to fuel cars, run factories, and create fertilizer. The suburbs will cease to exist, eventually, because the loss of "light, sweet" crude means that the suburbs may be TOO expensive to exist as currently constructed. (Picture USD $36/gallon) But as long as there is demand for oil, the raw material will be available for extraction. - Dauntless1, on 04/17/2009, -0/+4Yeah. Cause the ***** we pump into the atmosphere is good. Just like cigarettes, and heroin. If it makes you feel good, it couldn't possibly be wrong, could it?
- inactive, on 04/17/2009, -2/+4Front page, 80 diggs and no comments, the digg algorithm sucks
- charlie6969, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1I liked it.
- Scottamus, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1My reply is even more useless.
- Afrochu, on 04/17/2009, -3/+4The end of suburbia and the collapse of the American dream? Holy ***** I feel sorry for the poor greenwashed fools who think the sky is going to fall on their heads.
- Enterres, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1This article is like a breath of fresh air - there's so many people in denial, and so many who are apathetic. It takes real courage to be different; to try and be good.
- Scottamus, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1The problem is getting people (the "average" person) to prevent a problem vs. getting them to fix a problem.
People know how to change their lifestyle to prevent heart disease in their future but they don't do anything about it until they find out they have high blood pressure and their arteries are 85% clogged. And then they'd rather just take a magic pill that fixes everything (which is a whole different discussion) and keep going to McD.
Same with dwindling natural resources or global climate change. People won't do anything until it smacks them in the face. When it's a 120 degrees outside or your tank costs $200 to fill up then you'll want someone to fix it. It's pretty much part of human nature. - Scottamus, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Don't worry, the grown ups will take care of it. Look, American Idol is on! Your neighbor's got a hemi! Ooh NASCAR!!
- zombinate, on 04/17/2009, -2/+2Buried for being boring, and generally just a summary of news from 5 years ago
- VdigginG, on 04/17/2009, -0/+0nothing bodes well for civilization...
do we still consider ourselves civilized anyway? - mbcolt, on 04/17/2009, -3/+1Global warming again?
