- sexybobo, on 04/23/2009, -5/+52Wow he took something as interesting as a chair and made it completely boring.
Seriously this is the most boring TED talk i have ever seen.
Watch this really cool magician instead.

- ComicChic, on 04/23/2009, -1/+21A guy made a chair. It is easily adjustable, and tilts the headrest forward when you lean back. It also has gel in the seats and armcushions.
He's relatively interesting, but not 17 minutes interesting. - frsrblch, on 04/23/2009, -2/+20That there is a $2000 chair... my chair only cost $115 at Staples.
- MetalliTooL, on 04/23/2009, -2/+19A 17 minute commercial for a chair...
- liquidjamm, on 04/23/2009, -1/+11A hot chick at TED conference?
- CeruleanRed, on 04/23/2009, -1/+11"So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time."
On another note, I enjoyed the video, but I'm not sure it's TED worthy. - xXSheepyXx, on 04/23/2009, -2/+11Off subject, but was just curious how a chair article made it to the front page.
How has this user got a 214% popular ratio?

I guess that's just too much to expect from a $1,972 chair:

- sdcarter, on 04/23/2009, -1/+6That all depends on if you consider rambling for 15 minutes a crime or not.
- fangor, on 04/23/2009, -1/+6I demand that a chair that costs nearly $2000 (on sale) suck my *****. In fact, I demand that it read my mind and know when my ***** needs sucking without me telling it.
- cyberprunes, on 04/23/2009, -0/+4Not if you sit in a chair all day everyday...40+ hours a week. The chair becomes a very important part of being productive.
I should want to sit in a chair for 8 hours and then feel like I could sit in it for another 8 hours without my back, legs or ass hurting.
People think it's silly to buy an expensive chair but it's essential for at least my line of work (programming) - charlietuna, on 04/23/2009, -0/+4Notorious? Did he kill someone?
- wthulhu, on 08/29/2009, -1/+5BILLIE MAYS HERE FOR AERO CHAIR!
- Taiyoryu, on 04/23/2009, -1/+5TED = Technology, Entertainment, Design... the E part was a little lacking. Still interesting though.
For that money, I'd consider getting a treadmill desk instead. - pimpofpixels, on 04/23/2009, -1/+4If that guy talked about 3 times faster, I might have been watch the whole thing.
- Jaydo, on 04/23/2009, -0/+3unrelated, but:
+a million diggs for the DT logo icon. - quomen, on 04/23/2009, -1/+4Herman miller mirra user here.
:)
The freedom is much too stiff, even when leaning back. The chair feels a bit constricting. It also doesn't have an adjustable lumbar support :( - blacktriangle, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2Arms of chairs contribute massively to carpal tunnel. How ergonomic is that?
- killerpopiller, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2I've also bought one last year, it wasn't 2000$ - you get better prices for that chair - more like 1000$
I am working at home all day and eventhough I am not so convinced - I haven't had any backpains and I am 32 - speaks for the chair
I, personally can recommend the Grahl Duo Back Chair, which is even more expensive - but the backrest really takes a grip in your back, astonishing feeling. I passed the purchase offer, since the declining of the backrest had a to strong resistance, when leaning back.
But I am extremely lightweighted and I don't have so much weight to push backwards.
If you consider buying one Freedom Chair - don't get yourself the Promessa-Leather - it sucks!
you will glide downward and with naked legs (summer) you'll stick - xXSheepyXx, on 04/23/2009, -2/+4Boring, I prefer the ones that have a fridge in them
- exabytes16, on 04/23/2009, -1/+3They used those chairs in CTU on 24.
- inactive, on 04/23/2009, -0/+2A little boring, but ted.com always has the most interesting stuff! It's like a high-tech Discovery channel.
- eliburford, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1Did the video start to screw up near the end for anyone else? Interesting watch nevertheless.
- raptordrew, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1We have several of these Freedom chairs at my workplace, but I have to say - I much prefer the Liberty chair. Would I personally spend the money on one? No, but it is damn comfy.
- c1utch, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1I have one of the newer, mash-backed Liberty models, it almost makes working from home bearable, no matter what position you choose, you're comfortable for hours. Legs don't lose circulation, back doesn't hurt.
The point is, this is one part of the "ergonomic package" these chairs are spec'ed usually by architecture firms for their clients who want a maximum efficiency and comfort for employees, hospitals and business offices come to mind. To achieve the full effect though, one also needs adjustable keyboard and mouse trays that extend over the lap, a monitor that can move forward and backward as well as up and down, a foot rest, and proper lighting. - Katana, on 04/23/2009, -1/+2Herman Miller Aeron (type c) user here since 2003, cost £500.

Fully adjustable lumbar support and arms, you can change the resistance of the recline for when you lean back and change the lean end points, so if you want to have no resistance but need to sit up straight for a while, just pull the lever when upright and it won't lean back past that point.
Easily the most comfortable chair i've owned and sat in since it has no foam padding to wear down, deform over time and get all sweaty as you sink into it, nothing beats hovering on the mesh. - nroose, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1He talks about not having buttons the whole time, and then at the end he plays with all the buttons. Other than that, and the fact that I will never have that 20 minutes back, great show.
- mine4321, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1I just bought enough of these chairs for all my employees. Boy, I hope those venture capital guys keep putting money into my dot.com.
- inactive, on 04/23/2009, -1/+2really cool!
- toxicpiano, on 04/23/2009, -1/+2This was filmed in 2002.
- MusicMonkey5555, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1The only one I could find was leather of course it is $400 more then what you guys are saying, but hey if you are already spending that much 400 isn't much more. http://www.dwr.com/product/designers/d-g/niels-dif ...
Not sure the process they go through to make the chair, I am sure it is not that big of a process, but when I think about it a really nice bike that fits you well and whatnot can be $2000 so all things considering if it is as big a process as those really nice bikes then I may be able to see the price, plus being in a chair all day every day for work I would use it way more than a crazy good bike, but I do think that is a lot for a chair. Now if it was guaranteed to last a lifetime or they would replace it I may start to consider, but that is the other issue.
Note: Here is the non-leather one which is like half the price as others have stated: http://www.dwr.com/product/freedom-task-chair-w-he ... - REWK, on 04/24/2009, -0/+1I feel that the ART of mechanical design is looked down on in the field of engineering education and I find that disgusting.
- arleym, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1my Human Scale chair is the very best office chair I have ever sat in. His thinking from the ground-up paid off for my money.
2k is a ton of money for a chair, but when you're sitting there up to half your day it's worth it. - cosmotic, on 04/23/2009, -1/+2I don't think the poster made it into high school.
- nullcodes, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1It doesn't recline enough ... also the seat part needs to angle when the person reclines (like how my "executive" type chair is doing now).
The only innovation I liked about the chair was the headrest. I guess the arm rest were ok too .. but should have some outward swivel too rather than up/down. - Exhibitionist, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1Or, it the TED site ain't working for you, try: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_oa8m5Oq00
- cyberprunes, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1hmmm. because most people active in computers sit in chairs.... A LOT.
- cyberprunes, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1Yeah and your chair sucks.
- Schralpy, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1That is pretty questionable-more made popular than submitted...then again chair articles are pretty much the new hotness right now.
- killerpopiller, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1you can see in many tv-series:
Boston Legal
Life
24
and others I just forgot ;) - EnforcerErik, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1I have the chair that he is using. It is fantastic. I think the best feature is the headrest doesn't lean back when you do, so you can lean back while keeping your head pointed toward the monitor.
- iowamike, on 04/23/2009, -1/+2So TED is doing chair commercials? Is this product placement?
- BossKey, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1Which is why you can drop them all the way down for when you are typing.
- jschrab, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1I'm totally on board with Herman-Miller chairs. I have an Aeron at home but a Mirra at work (which I like *slightly* more than the Aeron).
A task chair DOES cost a fair bit. But the comfort and durability are worth it. - BossKey, on 04/23/2009, -0/+1I paid less than half of the price you posted. Are you quoting the leather version with the headrest just for the shock value?
Given the number of hours you use it, a chair can make the difference between medical problems and no medical problems. Medical problems can cost far more than a chair.
I bought the Freedom Chair many years ago and it's the most comfortable chair I've ever owned. When I get up from it there is no fatigue or soreness like I got from other chairs I've had to use. I even had an Aeron chair at one job and it was fine, but not as good as the Freedom Chair. - inactive, on 04/23/2009, -0/+0whaddaya mean p0op? 3 minutes in.
