- scallon, on 01/16/2008, -12/+88I still don't think she is attractive.
- funsac22, on 01/16/2008, -5/+46It took over 500 years to figure out who the model for the Mona Lisa was, now they know and your only response is "I still don't think she is attractive." Hahaha, that's great!
- rnelsonee, on 01/16/2008, -0/+29Nah - "Mona" is a title in Italian - like saying "Miss". From Wikipedia:
In Italian, ma donna from donna meaning my lady which became madonna, and its contraction mona. Mona is thus a polite form of address, similar to Madam or my lady in English. In modern Italian, the short form of madonna is usually spelled Monna, so the title is sometimes Monna Lisa, rarely in English and more commonly in Romance languages such as French and Italian. - smurfz, on 01/16/2008, -3/+28DaVinci Code got pwnd
- CTK14A, on 01/16/2008, -3/+26You assume that female art subjects should be? I think you've seen too many magazines.
- Chirp08, on 01/16/2008, -0/+15its the "I saw you masturbating" smile
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -4/+17I thought her name was just Mona Lisa?
- lava, on 01/16/2008, -0/+13Is it not enough that it's the most famous painting of all time?
Also, from a technical standpoint, this isn't Leonardo's best. It's kinda like Paris Hilton... nowadays it's famous because it's famous. - ipugh, on 01/16/2008, -3/+15I think the greatness of this painting often gets lost in today's society.
- rulzwrld, on 01/16/2008, -0/+11So the model didn't have any eyebrows ?
- hayzeus, on 01/16/2008, -1/+11Giggety?
- Gryffydd, on 01/16/2008, -0/+10But that smile! It's so mysterious and and knowing.
- hansk, on 01/16/2008, -0/+9it looks into your very SOUL
- ldbjr, on 01/16/2008, -2/+10So that's a picture of Madonna? Oh man, you're way off.
- pjkli, on 01/16/2008, -0/+8"I'm coming to steal your hamburgers!"
"No , Lois. Thats Hamburlger"
"Everyone know that Grimace is Ronald McDonalds retarded friend." - billizm, on 01/16/2008, -2/+10I'd hit it.
- ExGhost, on 01/16/2008, -0/+7I bet she had a great personality...
- funkytaco, on 01/16/2008, -0/+6I went on a blind date with a girl who I was told was a nude model for local art classes... and I must now assume they sometimes get girls with fat rolls so they can study drawing shadows? Who knows. Ergh.
- Toshibi, on 01/16/2008, -0/+6Well, everyone wants to paint a hotty. You get to experiment with new shading and techniques with different models. I would say, that if the Mona Lisa were the 500 year old version of Jessica Alba or whatever, the painting wouldn't be considered the masterpiece it is today.
- hansk, on 01/16/2008, -1/+7pics or it didn't....wait....uumm....this was shopped
oh yea do we have any other images of this lady so we can compare the two? some other proof would be nice - forestine, on 01/16/2008, -0/+6If it was a commissioned portrait, it wouldn't matter if she was attractive. He'd be getting paid.
- iateyourbaby, on 01/16/2008, -0/+5I'd hit it :)
- smurfz, on 01/16/2008, -0/+5HAHA! I never noticed that. Good call.
- rowlodge, on 01/16/2008, -0/+5she has a slight smile, in those days nobody smiled because their teeth were usually bad, no toothpaste, look at the famous portrait of george washington, he had wooden teeth at the time and didn't fit.
- ScaredOfTheMan, on 01/16/2008, -3/+8Its Obvious! She is smiling like that cause she preordered the MacBook Air AND Time Capsule!!
- consoneo, on 01/16/2008, -0/+5See it in person...
From an article...
"...By 9.30pm there are only about 10 people left in the room, and for the first time all day there's time to really examine the painting. But as closing time approaches, guards shoo the remaining visitors away so that only Mohamed Elabdi, the night cleaner, remains sweeping away the mound of rubbish discarded over the day at the foot of the painting.
After 30 years in France, he saw the painting for the first time three days ago when he started this new job with the Louvre. "It's hard to hard to understand what the fuss is about," he says. "But the way that the eyes follow you around the room as you work is disconcerting."
It's simply how unique and simple it really is, and the aspects contained in the painting that are not in many others.

That's the article, by the way. - dafragsta, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4Exactly. It's exceptional in the continuous tone and apparent blending of brush strokes, so his technique was definitely tight, but aside from that, it's famous because it's famous.
- omgsideburns, on 01/16/2008, -1/+5..you like the dirty talking grimmace.
- gregdigg, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4I'm not sure what math you're doing, but take a look at ANY other painting or photograph where the subject is looking at you and the same thing happens. Viewing a 2-dimensional painting doesn't change the content of the painting. That's just one of those stupid things people tell kids in an art museum when they're getting restless to try and keep them interested.
- WakasakiRocky, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3Good clip on why it is so special: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IitbJszd1kM
- hansk, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2she looks a bit happier about that then ceiling cat
- phybere, on 01/16/2008, -1/+3I suppose one of the more popular things about the painting is that the eyes are always looking at you, no matter what direction you look at it from.
I'm not an artist, but according to my math that's a difficult thing to paint. - dafragsta, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2That's easy. She farted.
- mogebier, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2FINALLY!!!
I can get some sleep!!
The identity of the painting is solved!! - monkeyrun, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2She doesn't have a myspace or facebook account.
- omgsideburns, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2i like when people get it. i actually lol'd. dug.
- momsshizzle, on 01/16/2008, -2/+4Dug!
- InitialDMP5, on 01/16/2008, -0/+2this is true my friend. I have had many years of figure drawing and life drawing classes. Most of the models are pushing 60 years old, and or very heavy people. Once is great while you would get an attractive girl. And its horrible because there is a hot naked chick in front of you (like 3 feet) and all you can think about is lighting and shading and making sure things look right. Its like torture.
- ordig, on 01/16/2008, -1/+3lol
- foshizol, on 01/16/2008, -2/+4The simplest explanation is always the best answer.
- InitialDMP5, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1yeah this picture has fewer herpes and crabs than Madonna. Its not accurate at all.
- liuite, on 01/16/2008, -1/+2but that's not what it said in 'da davinci code
- nicpedersen, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1but Jebediah Springfield did have a silver tongue.
- tyzent, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1your peripheral vision plays tricks on you, so you see a smile in the shadow and light play from her cheeks. when you look at her mouth you see no smile, but when you look elsewhere, like into her eyes for example, you see a smile. it is the work of a true master, although definitely not his best work, strange how some pieces are accepted with full force while more meaningful and arguably better pieces are all but brushed aside.
- CTK14A, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Ahh, comment buried... Whatever. Rubens (the artist behind 'Rubenesque' models) was an anomaly among artists of the time. According to evolutionary scientists, men simply prefer 36-24-36; it's not feminist friendly but it is true.
- joshcook83, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1i thought that orlando was the model.
- condormcs, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1...on a slightly different note we also found Carmen Sandiego and a guy in red and white stripes claiming to be Waldo...
- JedicodeWarrior, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1I think we need to hire a third party investigative team to .... aww who gives a *****!? She's been dead for centuries!
- smurfz, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1G Dub didn't have wood teeth, it's a common misconception that people have with him.
