- tehrob, on 12/12/2008, -1/+45It is achieved by letting the cameras shutter be open for a "long" time. While cameras usually leave the shutter open for fractions of a second in normal light, you can tell most cameras to leave the shutter open for longer in darker situations, and let more light into the lens. These were all for a minute a piece. With the camera on a tripod, you set it in front of the picture you want to take, switch off the lights, and click the shutter. While it is open for the minute, this guy ran around the room with some sort of LED light, and outlined or circled various things. It is a very cool effect.
- domcram, on 12/12/2008, -0/+40my brother put together a cool shot like these: http://www.flickr.com/photos/23322840@N03/22316810 ...

- peznex, on 12/12/2008, -3/+23Here is one I made with my laser: http://i37.tinypic.com/2qjkp50.jpg
This one you can see the beam: http://i36.tinypic.com/10ojml2.jpg - chmstar, on 12/12/2008, -0/+17Is that a clothes washer in the kitchen?
- hairyjim, on 12/12/2008, -0/+16How is this achieved? I like the end product very much.
- Linguo, on 12/12/2008, -10/+26Actually, it's EXACTLY like the Sprint Commercials.
- FoxOrian, on 12/12/2008, -1/+17You don't see the guy running around because the guy isn't giving off light. Since the guy isn't giving off any light, and he's constantly moving as to not block out other light, the camera is receiving no information about his position. If he had stood still for the full minute, you would see him. But in since the shutter was open for so long, he's turned into nothing more than a barely noticeable motion blur.
Get a camera and try it some time, you'll see that you'll disappear from the photos as well. - jakobmakob, on 12/12/2008, -0/+15Sprint copied the idea from photographers.

- LJU1492, on 12/12/2008, -0/+6Looks really good - I thought that there might be more blurry bits of the guys waving the LED/Laser around
- Myztry, on 12/12/2008, -0/+7It's really the same effect as this

- CollinWillis, on 12/12/2008, -0/+6Yeah, the Sprint commercials are EXACTLY like the Gjon Mili portrait of Picasso.
http://blog.joins.com/usr/h/a/hansha/30/imagefile( ... - Shawon, on 12/12/2008, -3/+9That's what I was thinking, but in some pictures you can see a slight blur of the guy, and maybe he's just wearing dark clothes or something so the camera doesn't really capture him if he's moving around quickly. But it's definitely possible though I've done similar pics before.
- ScottyAnimal, on 12/12/2008, -0/+5Holy grainy batman. Really cool though. I am pretty sure the sprint ones are CGI. They used the idea of the LED long exposure though.
- Mackofalltrades, on 12/12/2008, -1/+6you fail english! that unpossible?

- gianthorse, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2Is this hard to do? ive been wanting to do some experimenting but not sure where to start
- FoxOrian, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3Geez guy, calm down. Sprint has nothing to do with these photos.
It's just some guys who played around with long exposure photography. - jun2san, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3I'm sorry but THIS is the most creative use for LED out there.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTkX-2faAr4 - dbalaski, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2For some reason, those photos remind me of the '80s
- elbebe, on 12/12/2008, -1/+4Something like this was in Popular Photography (or similar) about 20 years ago, only with a penlight and bits of coloured plastic. But I guess it is new to y'all.
- laserpilot, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3here is a real time version of lightpainting that i coded in jitter for a class project: http://vimeo.com/2374085 ..let me know if anyone wants the code
- AngusMustang, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2Amazing! It looks just like a picasa login page!
- UNL1M1T3D, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2When that article was in Popular Photography I was two years old.
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -0/+2It turns into a process similar to stop motion. You have to repeatedly take these long-exposure shots, while varying your "lines" drawn slightly. It's a very lengthy process, as each single frame can take upwards of a 60 seconds for 1/10 of a second.
- mallchin, on 12/12/2008, -2/+4PHP FTW, but was has this got to do with light-writing? ;-)
- johnsweber, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2That video is very cool, but this is my favorite (also on vimeo) (although it's just timelapse photography based)
