- nepidae, on 06/23/2009, -0/+33"In 1995, only one hate website existed on the Net."
Thats a pretty damn bold claim. - inactive, on 06/23/2009, -0/+26the internet facilitates idiot organization
- Xageroth, on 06/24/2009, -0/+20I refuse to believe the best weapon against hateful ideas is censorship. That kind of thinking belongs to people who are too afraid their ideas won't withstand public discourse.
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -5/+24Hate is easy. Love takes courage.
- rawnzilla, on 06/23/2009, -0/+18Rawnzilla invites you to complete the "Which kind of sub-people are you?" quiz!
Rawnzilla completed the quiz "Which kind of sub-people are you?" with the result Dirty Jew.
You have had something happen in your past which makes you constantly longing for revenge or justice. You are wise and have your own specific talent, which you may use in more ways then one. You love money and are known to take risks, yet you are very careful and prepared for what happens. Congratulations! You are a Dirty Jew. - cersad, on 06/23/2009, -0/+18In other news: hate groups are actively trying to make it easier for law enforcement to track their plans and activities. Even these "private" forums can't be too hard to infiltrate when your only credentials are your ownership of a computer screen. I, for one, can see how this could paradoxically benefit the general public.
- gyrfalcon, on 06/23/2009, -1/+17I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.
-- The Friends of Voltaire, 1906 - williepepper, on 06/24/2009, -3/+17Digg is chock full of hate.
And lame, how did this make it to the front page? - manbearpig1, on 06/24/2009, -0/+12Only 10,000?
- TeCuervo, on 06/24/2009, -1/+13I hate hate groups.
- ru486, on 06/24/2009, -3/+15Any criticism of Israel means the site is a den of antisemitism.
- Bob177, on 06/24/2009, -3/+14 "One million Arabs are not worth a Jewish fingernail." – Rabbi Yaacov Perrin, Feb. 27, 1994 in N.Y. Times, Feb. 28, 1994, p. 1.
"It is unacceptable that nations made up of people who have only just come down from the trees should take themselves for world leaders . . . How can such primitive beings have an opinion of their own?" – Yitzhak Shamir, in reference to the black African nations who voted in support of the 1975 U.N. resolution, which denounced Zionism as a form of racism, in Yediot Ahronot, November 14, 1975.
SW center should know about racism and hating, it's been promoting them for 50+ years. - Siskoraban, on 06/24/2009, -1/+12Hate
–verb (used with object)

–verb (used without object)
3. to feel intense dislike, or extreme aversion or hostility.
–noun
4. intense dislike; extreme aversion or hostility.
5. the object of extreme aversion or hostility.
There is nothing subjective about the term. - inactive, on 06/24/2009, -3/+131? i personally operated 2 in 1995. so already that figure is wrong.
- maz2331, on 06/24/2009, -0/+9The first amendment protects unpopular speech. Popular (ie: politically correct) speech doesn't need protection.
- Jason4469, on 06/24/2009, -0/+8That is a pretty broad list of "Hate" sites. Basically any site that is anti anything, no matter the content, is being considered hate speech. Free speech is the only protection from totalitarianism and tyranny, whether it come from these groups or the PC machine that purports to know what is OK to say and what is not. Also, anyone who was on the internet in 1995 knows there was a lot more than one of these kinds of sites, and if you include BBS there was a ton of this going on long before that.
- adc86, on 06/24/2009, -1/+9Ever think that's where the hate comes from?
- blob4000, on 06/24/2009, -3/+11I bet at least 1/3 of what's been labelled "Anti-Semitism" is actually non-hateful, healthy criticism of Israel and its illegal occupation into foreign territories.
- GalacticXenu, on 06/24/2009, -2/+9The Simon Weisenthal foundation is not at all credible. For one, it has a distinctly pro-Israel bias where (surprise) anything supporting Palestine or criticizes the glorious nation of Israel is, of course, hate.
A lot of that stuff there is just tasteless jokes or tongue-in-cheek humor. - aoki5, on 06/23/2009, -10/+17the first amendment wasnt made to only let you say what you want its for everyone and as long as they can hate on the internet then theres less hate irl so whats the cat's cradle here?
- akurashy, on 06/24/2009, -1/+8I hate you for hating :(
- RatatRatR, on 06/24/2009, -2/+8More than that, I'd wager.
- captainchris, on 06/24/2009, -0/+6well it's definitely over 9000.
- kanojo1969, on 06/24/2009, -0/+6There were a ton of hate sites back then; I remember I was working for a compaq reseller, and 1995 was when we managed to get our email hooked up with compaq, over the internet. It was a huge deal, I remember it very well.
And one of the common things to do on this new internet thing was visit the white supremacist sites, partly because there wasn't a lot else that was entertaining, and partly just because the idea that these sites could spew hate all day every day without being accountable was kind of weird. Once you got your head around this, the internet was a lot more understandable.
So yeah, the first sentence of the first paragraph is just some random lie the author has pulled out of his ass and presents as fact. Nice start.
Anyway, it gets worse; the author wants to shut down all these sites because they are offensive. Nope, that's not how free speech works. As far as they are concerned they are speaking the truth, and if you want to be able to say what you think, then you must let others do the same.
Most of the people that visit those sites are turned off by the rhetoric anyway - it probably hurts their cause more than it helps, which is fine.
People who want to control everything we read just give me the *****, I feel like joining stormfront just on principle... - inactive, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5wish i could take credit for it!
- EndouOuto, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5Seriously, it was one of my favorite shows. But after the series was canceled ALF became bitter and turned into a virulent anti-humanist.
- blapierre, on 06/24/2009, -1/+6The first amendment was made to stop GOVERNMENT from stifling speech. Private websites have the right of FREE ASSOCIATION and can legally and morally choose to censor content on their websites that they don't like.
- RatatRatR, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5There are already way more of those online than there are hate groups, I think. A search for Hamas on Facebook, for instance, brings up the groups ***** Hamas, Crush Hamas, Stop Hamas, Hamas Sucks, No Hamas, anti Hamas, Destroy Hamas and Screw Hamas.
- gasoline, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5Few years ago the center ran an ad campaign in the Baltic states offering 10K USD for any report leading to conviction of a Nazi war criminal. They were terribly offended when a same kind of ad was posted and it offered 10K USD for any Jewish war criminals.
(The counter-ad wasn't just a troll - there indeed have been war criminals among the Jews in the Baltics. Idel Jakobson, for example, died in 1997 without ever having to face a trial. He was responsible for about 1200 deaths while working for NKVD. His case was supressed due to its "controversial" nature - the officials were extremely freaked out by the risk of international outrage.) - rl41, on 06/24/2009, -1/+6I learned nothing from this article.
- cristinamk, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5yes, dude, we read that in the article...
- loggedout, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4Anyone read this submission yesterday?http://digg.com/political_opinion/Free_speech_is_b ...
- JohnnyKdiggs, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4Hate groups? You mean like Anonymous?
[scicasm] - inactive, on 06/24/2009, -1/+5This is suspiciously like a bbc article form a few days ago...
As for hate, hate is not always bad Here are some things I hate:
Murder
Religion
Stubbing my toe in the dark late at night
But srsly guys people have the right to opinions not matter how stupid they are. the appropriate action is not to ban it, but to reason, persuade, argue and convince them otherwise.
and when that fails, troll.
Oh Yeah I also Hate fascists who want to limit Free Speech.
and also that John Davis guy. - JimmyTheClam, on 06/24/2009, -2/+6The Simon Wiesenthal Center’s definition of "hate" seems to be pretty damn broad, and I don't entirely buy what they are selling.
Take a look at their original report referenced in the article and make up your own mind:
http://www.wiesenthal.com/atf/cf/%7B54d385e6-f1b9- ...
Sure, there is plenty of 'hate' out there, but not much different than you see at Digg every week.
Then tell me that site on page 29 REALLY qualifies as "hate".
Stupid and childish maybe, but certainly not hate. - blob4000, on 06/24/2009, -1/+5These guys certainly seem to believe it is...

Look up the documentary "Peace, Propaganda and the Promised Land" - zaferk, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4i love how the article singles anti-semitism in the opener, as if that was the be all and end all of racism.
- megaton, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4Less hate in real life?
I don't think hate is like porn. You may be able to watch porn, jack off, and then not rape somebody later that evening. But I don't think posting hateful things relieves any sort of built-up pressure thus allowing the person to enter the real world and somehow not hate for a few hours.
If anything, it fosters belief in that hate, and further, encourages it to grow.
But, as they say, I don't like it, but I'll die for your right to say it. - zaferk, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3Ahhhh...so its ok then?
- Barackalypse, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3They're actually more of an Internet Hate Machine.
- bubbaliscious, on 06/24/2009, -4/+7Most profound and accurate statement on digg. Ever.
Watch me get dugg down! - Zervas, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3As a percentage of sites as a whole I'm willing to bet hate sites took up a bigger chunk in 1995 than they do now.
- Frostek, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.
- EndouOuto, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3And most "hate groups" have FBI members in key positions.
Makes it easier to keep tabs on them. The same goes for groups
like ALF, Earth First!! and the like. Remember the supposed
attack on a synagogue in New York? The man who recruited
and incited the men to act was a FBI informant. - Sage920, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3INTERNET HATE MACHINE
- durruticolumn, on 09/18/2009, -0/+3
"Makes it easier to keep tabs on them."
"The man who recruited and incited the men to act was a FBI informant."
Looks like they're doing more than keeping tabs on them. I don't really like the idea of the government inciting people who would otherwise probably never do anything. What if the group had managed to attack the synagogue before being arrested? That's a totally unacceptable use of government power. - DubYaSee, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2What was it that Wiesenthal did during WWII? There are several conflicting accounts.
