- rabidmonkey1, on 01/03/2008, -4/+190I do empathize for the poor and hungry around the world... But throwing money at the problem is simply not enough. The real problem with places like Africa is corrupt politicians and paramilitary that horde food and hijack the aid that comes in in order to subjugate the people. If you want real change, don't just throw money at the problem and hope it goes away.
- jthei, on 01/03/2008, -3/+126She's really irresponsible with her money.
- EatMyVirus, on 01/03/2008, -5/+100The solution is that they should be selling their handbags and getting some food!
- franklymister, on 01/03/2008, -5/+87Wow, that's a great looking handbag. Great price, and a really edgy looking model!
I don't see where you're supposed to buy the handbag, though. - Aharoni, on 01/03/2008, -4/+51In economics you learn that there are two forms of commodities (sorry if I don't use the exact terms in English, I only know the Hebrew terms) that can be manufactured by the market. Consumption goods and Investment goods.
Consumption goods are food (that are being consumed immediately), for example, and investment goods are tractors.
Investment goods are needed to help the market grow and increase the manufacturing abilities (of consumption goods as well). The problem is that the African nations' markets (manufacturing wise) are so small they can't afford manufacturing investment goods. So, the African nations' markets are only manufacturing consumption goods, which simply aren't enough for the population. The aid by other countries around the world isn't helping either, as they are usually loans that the African nations need to repay.
The only solution is providing aid in a way that will enable the African nations to expand their manufacturing capabilities. - Frostman3D, on 01/03/2008, -14/+50Damn, black people snatching purses over there too huh?
- ThinkBox, on 01/03/2008, -5/+31Yeah, because if anybody spends money on anything other than this charity they must be a hypocrite.
Come on, dont be such an elitist dickwad. A powerful Ad can promote a charity and be more valuable than the money that went into creating that Ad. All charities and causes need promotion.
Its hard to imagine that you have any friends at all, you must be one bitter son of a bitch. - shadus, on 01/03/2008, -6/+31Nothing against whatever the country that woman is from's poor and homeless... but if I'm going to help homeless people I think i'll help my own countries first. Clean up your own messes and all.
- chrisinsocalif, on 01/03/2008, -4/+27I think this comment is too smart for people to grasp, but I agree with it 100%.
- sockpuppets, on 01/03/2008, -2/+23If she sold her handbag on eBay she could eat for 8 weeks!
- ZooCoug, on 01/03/2008, -0/+19Sure, food aid will alleviate some of the problem, but it's a band-aid at best. The real problems run so much deeper that it will take a lot more than edgy billboards to create any significant change.
- wipis, on 01/03/2008, -1/+17Ironically that is what most models strive to weigh.
- akimbo, on 01/03/2008, -2/+17actually
OLPC = education = Food for life - ShaneApex, on 01/03/2008, -6/+21did you look at the bottom right corner of the picture?
- Anthet, on 01/03/2008, -1/+15Ok so Africa has for a century or two been the location of choice for ngo:s and for people looking to send money to help the poor. Southeast asia has for a century or two been the location of choice for companys and for people looking to that handbag cheeply produced. I wonder why Africa still is dead poor and southeast asia is home to the fastest growing economies in the world. So yeah, buy the handbag instead if you really want to help out.
- BoneStamp, on 01/03/2008, -4/+18That person can move to the place where a week's food is $4.
- bmystry, on 01/03/2008, -2/+15I have agree with your agreeance
- DefaultGen, on 01/03/2008, -0/+11You know, I actually thought it was a weird handbag ad for a while.
- kkkkk, on 01/03/2008, -1/+12I have to agree with your agreeance too.
- Grimdotdotdot, on 01/03/2008, -1/+12Nice computer you've got there.
- Supurcell, on 01/03/2008, -0/+10Yeah. Since they're all so thin, they might as well put it to work for them.
- shaka776, on 01/03/2008, -6/+16So, I should by a $10 Wal-mart purse that was crafted by somebody in a sweatshop, thereby enabling more socio-economic problems?
I love the thought behind it, and I support it, but let's come up with real solutions and not just nifty photos... - charlie55, on 01/03/2008, -2/+12buying handbags feeds poor workers who make the handbags. better to give them jobs than handouts. jobs pay regularly.
- doublsh0t, on 01/03/2008, -5/+15www.freerice.com
- PabloMac, on 01/03/2008, -0/+9Yes, but she has style.
- epicstruggle, on 01/03/2008, -3/+12Unfortunately yes, while working towards a more stable solution.
- sockpuppets, on 01/03/2008, -5/+14Feed that person to the hungry. Hakuna Matata, the circle of life.
- mearom, on 01/03/2008, -2/+11I hear ya man. Mabye they should stop spending their money on handbags!
- TheOther1, on 01/03/2008, -1/+9That's like saying the way to personal financial freedom is the lotto.
- Zippo, on 01/03/2008, -0/+7Education is the key. The more educated a nation, the better. If more Africans could get a solid education, the rest would start to get better, too.
- lukas88, on 01/03/2008, -1/+8I think this ad is suggesting a change, a change in perspective. It is also giving a pretty simple way for people help.
- ThinkBox, on 01/03/2008, -3/+10$ for food wont solve the problem... in fact, most economists says it makes the problem worse...
- 4rp4n3t, on 01/03/2008, -1/+8Um, that person probably *already* lives somewhere where a week's food is $4.00...
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -2/+9You send them money, they take it, then the government takes it, buys guns and shoots the person they took the money from, if not a western company from any country shoots them for the land, if not, the agency taking the money from you gets taxed, takes fees, hires staff to call you for money and pays "expenses" to the staff managers and directors. If not then all of the above. Sometimes I am wrong, most of the time I am not wrong at all.....Africa! The land of the corrupt, murderous and militant ***** rich bastards...They got freedom from Imperialism years ago....did nothing....Maybe I have seen enough in a lifetime to be so cynical...prove me wrong if you can..
- Mothrog, on 01/03/2008, -3/+10Yes. Let's send more free food aid and continue the never ending cycle of flooding their markets with free food so no local farmers can compete, making farming an impossible profession there, and just continue the cycle on and on. Brilliant. Guess what, most of these situations aren't quite as simple as gee, let's throw free ***** and money at it! If it was, Africans would have been just fine a long time ago.
- MacEnvy, on 01/03/2008, -0/+7I think that would completely shut down digg.
- chaimkeh, on 01/03/2008, -2/+9yea, i dont think we wanna go ''fixing'' anymore country's...
- Judacious, on 01/03/2008, -3/+9This is obviously some type of Nigerian phone scam... text "aid" to 2255 to give some rich guy even more money
- Stupidumb, on 01/03/2008, -5/+11Why the ***** did she spend all that money on a handbag?
- Jemm, on 01/03/2008, -3/+9"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." -Chinese Proverb
- Motodog, on 01/03/2008, -2/+8Food + Handbag = €36
- ani625, on 01/03/2008, -2/+8people in need... of handbags!?
- MatchStick, on 01/03/2008, -4/+9lol, nice save, dugg
- Halsfield, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5like rabidmonkey said, a lot of the time there are gangs or organized groups that steal the food and supplies the red cross or whoever delivers and it does no good. We need to get those people out of power, and throwing money at it simply is not a good way to go about it. Give donations to the red cross if you really feel a need to donate, they probably have the best chance of getting the food through, but as i said, shipments are regularly highjacked, there have even been a couple of large boat shipments that have gotten taken by organized crime funded pirates in some areas. They definitely need help, and i hate people that claim to have super high morals, but spend money frivolously , like they are portraying in this picture, so its a good picture, but money =/= problem solved.
- TubbyMcGee, on 01/03/2008, -4/+9ad to bring awareness to desert people living like they are in a desert = $500.
- cr1t, on 01/03/2008, -1/+6Very well put 3 problems with manafacturing in Afrika is one
1. Little or none infrastructure South Africa being the best developed in this regard
2. Litte or none skilled workers
3. China still cheaper. - MacEnvy, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5I understand what you're saying, but do you honestly think that the climate in, for example, Kenya is more harsh than the environment in developed Sweden? I mean, humans came from there originally, right? We have to be somewhat well-adapted to it.
You said above that surviving there can be done with 18th Century technology ... so wouldn't that give everyone more time in the day to work on improving things, rather than just surviving? I don't think I understand. - Ymeg, on 01/03/2008, -2/+7www.thehungersite.com
