- Chrissilvanet, on 06/27/2008, -1/+6I'm not seeing how this is "art", I mean it is definitely design within a specific medium, but I am failing to see the idea or groundbreaking form behind it. To shoot a piece of metal painted with car paint and make designs really doesn't comment, reference, or even bring anything new to the table...The only thing I could really "pull" from it would be about drive by shootings or destruction of cars, I don't know. I am familiar with SVA since I go to SFAI...I'll have to do a little research into who this guy is and what his art is doing.
- Calcularius, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3William S. Burroughs did it first with his Shotgun Paintings.
- heymikedude, on 06/27/2008, -0/+3art? bs....
- shutaro, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4This is how all art should be made.
- sgun, on 06/27/2008, -1/+4A redneck renaissance man.
- Dyre, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3I'm not seeing how this is art, either.
Regarding your last comment, though, I have a question. Don't you think art should stand on its own? How would researching the guy/his art change your perception of his work being art or not? Sure, he may have some deep, meaningful message that he's trying to convey, but if you don't see it, why should you consider it art anyway? - inactive, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2The bullet swiss chees metal was cool, but the blown up particle board was stupid.
- thescimitar, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3I'm not sure I comprehend the latter two projects, but the first (bullet holes/impressions through coated metals) does have a certain ring of context to it. Anyone who has grown up or lives in a rural area is well familiar with bullet holes in road signs, even to the point where they are no longer signs. Viewed from a temporal standpoint, Stromberg may be making an analogy here.
It's interesting to think about the result of two processes, pulled out of time, and combined in their pure states: pristine, finished metal materials, and un-oxidized damage to those materials through a "typical" human process. - ElTomacco, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2"Why won't you be art, ARRRG!" - FrothyA, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1I consider Savannah College of Art and Design to be one of the top 10 art schools in the nation, I more say top 7 or 8 to be exact. Sad I didn't choose to apply for enrollment.
- ExGhost, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1That's... interesting.
- Bawk, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1I'm hiring him to paint my house.
- nascentia, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1My fiance goes to SCAD. I'm going to ask her if she can switch her major from Animation to *****.
- ShempRider, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Savannah Morning News article about this guy:
http://savannahnow.com/node/523436 - pauliusuza, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1Meh, I was hoping to find a footage from Iraq.
- nc60659, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1Everything's art! Look at me fingerpaint with feces, starve a dog, kill a man, kill a woman, kill a man and a woman, kill a man and a woman with a frozen mass of feces shaped like that dog that I starved, ugh, wait, I mean like that other piece of art... That I art'd.
- bjmoose, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1This is art? Excuse me, I need to bury another Cadillac nose first in the ground at an angle to match the others.
Yes I know, in the eyes of the viewer. I guess some folks are just gullible - Dyre, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1Ah, I think I understand. So, just in case you're missing something--like looking at the corner of some painting going "I don't get it", then backing up and going "ohhhhhhh ... it's a house", or something?
- Mothrog, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1How the ***** does a piece of metal with bullet holes placed semi-geometrically in it remotely make something art? You could find better "art" after the Knob Creek shoot. And the other two? Just completely ***** retarded.
- Chrissilvanet, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Well I say I should research because there are a lot of artists that i respect greatly who have a whole series of works that all interlock with each other.
- lrdntwnd, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Not all art must be "designed." There are many forms of art where the end product is produced by experimenting with various media and their interactions. I'm sure he's trying to explore some ideas with this research, though I'm not sure what they are. And regardless, I think the results (at least the aluminum sheets) are quite interesting. I'd like to see them in person to get a better idea of how they turned out.
Haven't you ever started a painting or a drawing or any other project and found it forming itself? I often have projects that determine their own final form just as much as I do. So, I can totally understand where he's coming from here. Sometimes it just fun to play around with new ideas and materials and see what happens. - PreKrime, on 06/30/2008, -0/+0I dig it. It is definitely a process piece. It reminds me of a continuation of some of the Futurist works. A medium that combines random output created by combining combustible mediums and mailable substrates. The successful piece might take quite some time to produce based on the unpredictability of the materials. I find that some of the "enzo-esque" qualities of the gunpowder and paper pieces are quite beautiful; the subtleties of contrast between the darker burn marks in contrast to some of the subtler smoke markings reminds me of Asian watercolors. I think to truly appreciate this work you have to get past the violence of it's creation and focus more on the chance aesthetics produced by the process and that philosophically adds to the beauty of the work.
- pchad2002, on 06/28/2008, -0/+0Isn't this just a rip-off of Cai Guo-Qiang, who recent had an exhibit at the Guggenheim?
- Inflammo, on 06/27/2008, -1/+1Nothing like that. Nothing like that at all.
- JP42, on 06/27/2008, -0/+0I could do that. Therefore it is not art.
- inactive, on 06/27/2008, -5/+4Kinda like how I used to write my name in paintballs on the n64 playing goldeneye 007.
- SirvenomItsac, on 06/27/2008, -1/+0I guess you could call it "target practice"
