- toe_head2001, on 09/23/2008, -11/+70You could have used Transmission.
- DeathAxe, on 09/23/2008, -4/+46New feature? http://img.skitch.com/20080923-nefpgqfib23d3qfhkce ...
- digitalpencil, on 09/22/2008, -10/+51At last!! I've been waiting so long for this, bye-bye Azureus!!
- tracywood, on 09/23/2008, -15/+50What is wrong with Transmission!!
- bballbackus, on 09/23/2008, -8/+42Another new feature?
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/5411/picture1hl9. ... - chromerium, on 09/23/2008, -1/+28µTorrent's engine is a little better than transmission's. µTorrent also has a solid automatic RSS downloading function, so you can say, subscribe to eztv and grab every heroes episode as it's released automatically.
Other than that, Transmission is fine. - ColinZeal, on 09/23/2008, -16/+34HOW is it better? Just by looks?
In that case, it´s a sad macboy comment... - Burn, on 09/23/2008, -2/+19So by your estimation Transmission copied Apple Mail?
By programming in Cocoa and following Apple's interface standards you will always end up with applications that look similar/the same, and thats the whole point! - salmonmoose, on 09/23/2008, -4/+20They're just measuring by file size;
Win Client: 260 KB
Mac Client: 1.26 MB - Dotcommer, on 09/23/2008, -4/+19Such as.....?
- doctordbx, on 09/23/2008, -25/+40"Better than its windows counterpart" - what a fanbois comment to make.
- 1town, on 09/23/2008, -2/+17YOU DONT KNOW WHAT THE WORD IRONY MEANS
- inactive, on 09/23/2008, -3/+17You SHOULD have used Transmission.
- Invid, on 09/23/2008, -1/+15Transmission is great, but it lacks the configurabilty of µTorrent. I wish I could get it for Linux too, but I'll be happy with Win/Mac alone I guess with Deluge for Ubuntu.
- bballbackus, on 09/23/2008, -0/+13@lukes Transmission does have a webui...
- digitalpencil, on 09/22/2008, -3/+14i've just grabbed it, seems stable although i've not put it through its paces yet but it's far from bloatware, in fact it's nippy as *****! Full uTorrent port to cocoa by the looks and the UI's seems pretty well laid out..
I've been running uTorrent under Wine so I can't wait for a full release to transpire! - spyd3rweb, on 09/23/2008, -1/+11Why does utorrent hate open source?
- SATURN, on 09/23/2008, -0/+10It doesn't look like Transmission. It looks like Xtorrent.
- EmileVictor, on 09/23/2008, -4/+13uTorrent is far superior, even if Transmission is good (it is), there are some necessary features in uTorrent that are missing.
- chromerium, on 09/23/2008, -1/+10I guess, binaries will be different sizes on different platforms. I'm guessing that µTorrent on the Mac is a standard Objective-C Cocoa application including .xib files etc, with the C part of the bittorrent engine from µTorrent included. Doesn't take long for a .app bundle on a mac to get up to a couple of MB, even with 'hello world'.
I'm guessing that µTorrent on Windows is all C or C++, with the GUI code hard-coded. Its probably a lot tighter mostly because the original developer who wrote µTorrent is an insanely good Win32 C/C++ developer and was just able to cut out all the frameworks and code directly against the Win32 toolkit.
If they wrote the Mac version in C with Carbon, they could have made it pretty small ... but why bother. Carbon is dead.
Transmission is 5.5MB, so compared to that it still earns the prefix "µ". It probably also has debugging symbols unstripped ;) - goobimama, on 09/23/2008, -7/+15Oooh. The Mac version look soooo much better than the Windows one! I mean, it was expected to be that way, but still, this just looks awesome. Plus Quick Look and Crash me features! :D
- counterplex, on 09/23/2008, -1/+9Transmission has encryption
- AngelBunny, on 09/23/2008, -2/+9transmission is lacking in options.
- 1town, on 09/23/2008, -1/+8uTorrent looks like *****, so that they topped it with standard mac interfaces isn't really that surprising. Was kinda hoping for something less candyass myself.
- elmaynardo, on 09/23/2008, -1/+7uTorrent has a list view. Transmission doesn't, which sucks if you have a ton of torrents active.
- lukes, on 09/23/2008, -2/+8Yes, uTorrent is better than Transmission. I like Transmission but with uTorrent I could drill down a lot further into the details of the torrent as it was downloading. I had more control, and could see what was going on. Hopefully all these meta details will end up in the public release of the Mac version.
- falafelkiosken, on 09/23/2008, -2/+8Microsoft are gonna sue their asses
- 1town, on 09/23/2008, -0/+5Pfft, why haven't they made a OS9 version? They are forgetting about the old school peeples.
- AngelBunny, on 09/23/2008, -2/+7it has more features
- jawbreaker4fs, on 09/23/2008, -1/+6Just tried it out... works as advertised.
- wastern, on 09/23/2008, -1/+6why even bother comparing it to xTorrent, that app has been banned by a bunch of trackers. It was a cool concept and had a great interface, but its useless if it can't download anything
uTorrent's interface looks like a standard Mac app. A well made app keeps consistent with the UI of the rest of the OS. To look radically different wouldn't be very "mac like" - pokemonfan4eva, on 09/23/2008, -2/+7Anyone else notice a lot more stories on Digg coming from Torrent Freak? Woot wooot!
- cows, on 09/23/2008, -0/+5Out of curiosity, have you ever used a mac for a significant length of time?
- kinseyincanada, on 09/23/2008, -1/+6so is it better than Transmission?
- graemee, on 09/23/2008, -0/+5Not owned, by BT. They just bought the code. Don't forget to tuck your hair under your tinfoil.
- ColinZeal, on 09/23/2008, -6/+11I can understand if it wins on technical merits, not by something as subjectiv merits as, "looks".
You macheads try to win in every way huh? - seanm, on 09/23/2008, -2/+6Indeed, they copied a ton from Transmission's user interface. Side-by-side comparison here: http://forum.transmissionbt.com/viewtopic.php?f=1& ...
- TheUngod, on 09/23/2008, -4/+8What do you expect? Every Mac article needs some pretentious Windows bashing.
- Rickard, on 09/23/2008, -1/+5DHT for example
- iXPilot, on 09/23/2008, -1/+5What about sources?
- Zippo, on 09/23/2008, -0/+4Apple stopped selling PPC-power Macs two years ago... even longer unless you have a Powermac. You're going to see less and less being compiled for the platform as time goes on.
- digitalpencil, on 09/23/2008, -0/+4^ whereas running under VM's somehow going to reduce overheads? I run uTorrent under crossover, runs fine, as do many other apps.. it's not perfect by any means which is why i run parallels as well but it works fine for lots of things.
- Edmunds, on 09/23/2008, -10/+14"As expected, the application looks very Mac-like, and better than its Windows counterpart"
Smug Prick - AngelBunny, on 09/23/2008, -0/+4you can torrent in college. stunnel if you have to.
- rompom7, on 09/23/2008, -0/+4Guys, I think he was being sarcastic.
- digitalpencil, on 09/23/2008, -1/+4Not configurable enough for my needs.. don't get me wrong, it's light-weight and in terms of functionality, it's come along in leaps and bounds but I still can't get the same speed I get through Az..

Diggers suffer from short memory? or ignorant? or old diggers have left the scene due to ppl like babyman running this site and its not technology site anymore? - counterplex, on 09/23/2008, -0/+3Just checked with the version of Transmission installed here - 1.34 (6770). It has block list support (Preferences -> Peers -> Blocklist. Enable it and click on "Update" to get the latest block list), proxy support including HTTP, SOCKS 4/5 (Preferences -> Network -> Connect to trackers with a proxy). As far as DHT is concerned, it does have an option to "Enable peer exchange for public torrents" which sounds like what DHT does as well - unless I'm mistaken.
I'm not affiliated with Transmission in any way and I love uTorrent on Windows but I _am_ curious to know what uTorrent brings to OSX. - jesstech, on 09/23/2008, -0/+3Then none of you guys have been using recent builds of Transmission. It supports selective file downloading, prioritizing files, and it now has a webui. It's a *very* decent competitor to uTorrent on windows.
- mrsteveman1, on 09/23/2008, -0/+3+1
The universal binary stuff was just a transitional thing, they expect by the time developers start targeting x86 only people will have replaced those PPC boxes. -
