- Glenn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14MU and VT deserve to die. They've done nothing innovative, just thrown money at each other. (And ads at users.)
- computerdude33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Like MacUpdate Desktop?
Guess the dinosaurs just got a space station. - peeloo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10http://osx.iusethis.com/
- cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I completely agree with Bhima. I also entered all the apps I have installed on iusethis. It was fun! Especially in the first days when I couldn't find the smaller apps and they appeared after a day or two. However, since then I looked a few times on the site and my list, but nothing ever seems to change. I also don't see how this site should replace Versiontracker or Macupdate. I don't even see a big connection between those sites and iusethis. The focus of Versiontacker and Macupdate is to notify users of new software releases. iusethis seems to concentrate on community based recommendations of apps.
- marcusramberg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7We do have screenshots on the app page. We also have screenshots on the main page, unlike our competition. see next to the download on some of the apps, where it says 'Screenshot'. There's also an icon on the app page to show if apps are universal binaries or not. I understand that a new user interface can be hard to get used to, and we'll try to work on making these things more obvious.
- littlebiker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9It's basically Social Content rather than few editors telling you which are the cool software. It rocks!
- matt2e, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Pretty good site to look through on a rainy day
- KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I don't think iusethis will kill them off. I really like the macupdate desktop app, and iusethis just doesn't give me that functionality
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@McMultiverse:
just because they are recommended/popular, doesn't mean they are the best.
think Britney Spears. and the rest of pop music, really.
Just because a lot of people like it doesnt mean it's the best. - marcusramberg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Actually, as I mentioned in the Interview, that's part of the reason we want to support Sparke Appcasts. Sure, the established sites provide subscriber services in this area, which lock you in to their site, but we want a more general solution to this problem. We believe that by adding support for appcasts, we can help drive forward the better way to fix this. :)
- d00d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Deserve to die? Geez man, dial it back a little. They're just websites.
Version Tracker and MacUpdate have historically and presently offer a very good service to Mac users, namely keeping them up to date on the late software and software updates. In fact, they're so good at monitoring software updates, that it's to a fault (with some developers specifically asking Version Tracker not to list betas).
iusethis may be good at rating software (or at least gauging usage), but it's power as a version tracking site is still unknown. With no notification mechanism, I don't think it'll actually touch VT or MU's bread and butter.
I see iusethis and VT/MU as complementary instead of competition. - marcusramberg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What you are looking at is actually our 'hot' listing, which measures what apps had activitiy on the site in a last few days. From the hot list there is also a link to top apps, this page:
http://osx.iusethis.com/top - chrismcelligott, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The problem with a site like this and the authors know about it, it's that the A-list apps like Adium, NetNewsWire and iTunes are going to rule the top recommendations lists all the time. Giving little or no hope to competing apps, MacUpdate offers an unbiased listing, something which a community based site like this will never have.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Have you actually been on the site? They do have screenshots and the ability to see if it's universal binary or not.
- Bhima, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5OK as a Mac User I signed up, looked around, and poked at things. After I found the few applications on the site that I use and aren't on the Apple Software update thing... Well... I sort of ran out of things to do on the site. So it's a pretty site and I'm sure when I go back in a few weeks it will tell me some app has been updated... but I don't see what is so exciting about.
Am I missing something? - McMultiverse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Am I missing something?"
Obviously. You know how Digg promotes some great stories that you might not have seen before? Now apply that to software. EUREKA! - rythmickason, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The title isn't cool enough to merit a digg.....
Although I am picturing a big tidal wave immediately followed by macbooks running for cover in a futile attempt to survive. - test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wish digg looked that good....
as mac user it was good to see some new apps that i would have never found. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@prockcore
Actually there are darwinports and fink, but those only carry packages for open-source stuff. - Octave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone know of a windows or linux version?...i think this could really catch on, and as i havent moved to OSX yet (still saving for that macbookpro), id like to see a windows one.
- telosmachina, on 11/19/2008, -0/+0Check out:
http://metaquark.de/appfresh/
It hooks into the site and updates your software as needed. - serpicolugnut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I stand corrected. UB denotions have been added recently, and there is a screenshot link on the apps page. Now, since the devs are reading this, here are a few other additions that would bring it closer to MU/VT parity -
1.it would be nice to have a "compact mode" listing view for the home page, so you can view more of the apps at a time.
2. It would be nice to have newly added items to your db (that aren't new releases) to not show up on the front page.
Keep up the great work! - DiamondDog, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Wow dude, get your history right. You mean "as the Flood was to dinosaurs."
And I think I still like version tracker better. - McMultiverse, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Uh, wouldn't it make sense that A+ apps like Adium, NetNewsWire and iTunes retain their top recommendations because ... they're always recommended? Your comment has a complete and utter logical disconnect.
- serpicolugnut, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2iuesthis isn't fully baked yet. It's a great variation on the app tracker motif, but it lacks a lot of useful information. For instance, there are no screenshots available on the app's page. The page doesn't tell you if the app is a Universal Binary or not. Also, because they are still building their app database, you can't look at this site and determine what is a new release, and what has just been added to their database and is showing up on their front page.
Also, it would be much easier for MU/VT to add the social ranking component to their apps than it would be for iusethis to add all of their missing functionality to theirs. Still, they are in beta and could end up surpassing the other sites if they keep adding to their feature set. - Purposeless, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2NO MORE BLOGSPAM!
- onetoad, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4I love this site, works good.
- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I always wondered why no one did anything like linux's package management for OSX. There's a lot of OSX software out there and it's a pain in the ass to keep up to date.
It'd be nice if iusethis had a little app that could run once a week and compare the software in my Applications directory to their database. - kaboegel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0>> iusethis is to MacUpdate & Versiontracker as the meteor was to dinosaurs
so it will only contribute partially to their demise then - bushy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0digg if only for the title of the post
