- Dradu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+158Those iPhoneSimFree people must be hating their lives right about now.
- thumb_tack99, on 10/10/2007, -7/+105death star destroyed
- shafiq, on 10/10/2007, -3/+85probably iPhoneSimFree will give out a free $100 gift card.
- evanstapler, on 10/10/2007, -1/+79Not as much as the people who already paid 100 dollars to unlock it already...
- MLyzz, on 10/10/2007, -11/+79I too was a iPhone basher. Then I purchased one. Good god. All you digg geeks, go buy one. Worth every penny. Its basically a phone, ipod, dvd player, laptop, and provides me with games while I ***** myself on the toilet. Damn its good to be rich.
- Noobist, on 10/10/2007, -2/+62iPhoneSimFree must be kicking themselves about their delays now... teaches you right!
- imbob, on 10/10/2007, -1/+44muhahaha t-mobile here i come!
- mrowlinson, on 10/10/2007, -3/+32Now all it needs is for someone to make a nice gui and automate the whole process.
- awhiteflame, on 10/10/2007, -3/+29Why? They only sell wholesale. They've already sold a good number of licenses, made a bunch of money, collected thousands of email addresses, and received a metric tonne of publicity. I'd say they're doing pretty well.
- KevenM, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24If you ***** yourself on the toilet, you have bigger issues
- endlessfight, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Sweet jesus it worked!
- ispshadow, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20It won't happen, but just in case engadget bails....here's a mirror of the guide and files:
http://randomgeek.com/2007/09/11/iunlock-released-unlock-your-iphone-for-free/ - theghoul, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16History is written by the victors.
- graz11, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14iphowned.
- Ozzy73, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12GUI is expected in the next few hours
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16I bet they would've been the only ones to ever discover it if they hadn't put "Free" in their name. When you charge for a product that has the word 'free' in the title, you pretty much jinx yourself completely. (and no, i don't actually think no one else would have discovered it).
- hexydes, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14So a question. This unlock lets you take the iPhone to other GSM networks than AT&T. My big issue is that I am on AT&T, but refuse to get an iPhone because I have no interest in having a $20 a month data plan (come on, it has wi-fi, and so do I just about everywhere I go).
Would having an unlocked iPhone allow you to circumvent being forced into buying a data plan on AT&T's network? - TheCount, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13I'm sure they are, Engadget has been working real hard on promoting them too.
- bsonline, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10$50 gift card, usuable only at iPhoneSimFree for unlocks and dead puppies, which are just no fun.
- Tenoq, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Not as pathetic as replying to say that... wait...
- dagamer34, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Some people have T-Mobile (like me), others live outside the US. Don't be so selfish and narrow-minded.
- drlha, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7CORRECTION: Apple said they are neutral on the idea of third party apps. Unlocking the iPhone is a totally different kettle of fish, and we don't know yet how Apple will react to it.
- sakuraz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7....What about the guy who gave a car for it:S
- digger_twit, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10I can safely say that Jordan Chark got pwnd.
http://twitter.com/charkshark/statuses/259477542 - websyndicate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I will wait till the dust clears and there is a really easy dmg to run
- schlurbna, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Because not everyone lives in America.
- toetagger, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8The rich really are different. You don't pull your pants down before you sit on the toilet? I guess if you're rich, you can ***** yourself where ever the frick you want. Play with your iPhone while someone else wipes your ass. Sweet, good for you.
- funkytaco, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I must have the best timing. I ordered the iPhone 4GB Thursday and it arrived today.
OSX USERS:
The ACTIVATION:
To activate - http://modmyiphone.com/wiki/index.php/How_to_software_unlock_iPhone_iUnlock
Pretty simple GUI (Major Note: if activation fails, make sure The activation .plist file is called "a" and is dropped in the same directory as iNdependence.app - it will then fail, close it. Re-open it, then activation should succeed!).
I recommend following their Guide for Installer as well:
http://modmyiphone.com/wiki/index.php/Apptapp_in_OS_X
Don't follow those other SSH tutorials. Once again, use iNDependence.app , then just click the buttons on that SSH tab (it will be self explanatory, since they're just buttons).
The UNLOCK:
http://www.freeiphoneunlock.com/guide/
I'm following the "Windows" unlock (link right above), BUT just substitute Transmit.app when PuttY for Windows is mentioned and use Terminal.app to "scp" (a.k.a secure copy) files to your iPhone.
Just unzip the iUnlock zip file to /iUnlock on your drive, along with the files mentioned in the tutorial:
* iUnlock
* ICE03.14.08_G.fls
* nor
* minicom
* bbupdater
I actually ended up using Transmit.app to SFTP the files over.
Near the last steps, minicom was giving an error: "no termcap database present"
I had to download a file named termcap (not mentioned in the tutorial to /etc on the iPhone.
And now I'm unlocked!
I will mirror this at http://www.avidbeauty.com/iphone with any of your corrections/suggestions.
The following is just because I'm a little excited it worked. You can quit reading now. :)
Welcome to minicom 2.2

OK - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6because if they patch it more people can find another solution idiot.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -1/+6Which will no doubt happen in a few days.. these hacks only get easier and easier to perform as time progresses. There'll be a one-click iPhone unlock soon enough I bet.. :)
- dext3r, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7I won't digg you down, but expecting a GSM phone to work on CDMA is pretty retarded. I have Verizon too, but you don't hear me complaining.
- sw1val, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6ROFL, Look at my above comment!
You activate your phone with a hack! you do not activate your phone through AT&T! therefore...
you do not sign up for a contract,
you do not get forced into a data plan,
you do not pass Go you do not collect 200$.
Use your existing AT&T sim card in your new iphone, swap between iphone and old phone with no problems.
If you use data it just gets charged per KB like if you were to use your browser on your old phone - wurk4fude, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9the world thanks you.
- nartvq, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Their complaints may well be valid in their area. Wireless companies don't provide charts that show signal strength at the street level, so there's no way to truly compare services until you have a chance to do a side by side comparison.
Personally, I feel phones with SIM chips are superior to ones that don't use them. These phones allow me to make local calls at the local rate world wide and swap phones based on the situation. You can't do that with a phone from Verizon. - liutang, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I'm not touching your iPhone with a 20ft pole.
- emt1451, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5The iPhone doesn't support 3G...
- sw1val, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7You can use your iPhone on AT&T's network without having to "unlock it" All you have to do is "activate it". If you false activate your iPhone you don't have to pay 20 bucks a month. However You-Tube Application and Visual Voice Mail do not work. (there is a hack for the You-Tube one, but it's kind of not worth it) For activation help go to the iPhone Dev wiki
http://iphone.fiveforty.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page - MrMongoose, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6If you're making over $37.50 an hour, I don't see how you'd have a problem buying an 8gb, even at the original price.
- ch4os1337, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4so thats what digg is..
- funkytaco, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4http://iphone.unlock.yes@iphone.unlock.no
- bigsteve, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Not an exploit. A documented feature of the baseband. See, cause Apple isn't the only customer of the company that manufacturers the GSM module used in the iPhone. Some manufacturers put it in their T-Mobile phone and need to lock it to that network. So I wouldn't say ***** APPLE. They implemented the GSM module to spec as per a contract they have with a service provider.
But you know, it's digg, so just yell whatever. - drlha, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4In the USA its just T-mobile actually (and a few smaller local cellphone providers that use GSM, e.g. Immix), Sprint is CDMA like Verizon.
- chriskzoo, on 10/26/2007, -2/+5I assume this eliminates asynchronous voicemail? What other features are lost?
- haid, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Next hacking target: SKYPhonE
- bsonline, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6To be rich? I paid 299 for mine. I feel and look rich, but for less than 8 hours pay I get the same toy (almost, only 4 gb for me) as you rich kids.
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5He did plan to use it as a phone though, just without EDGE data.
- cquilliam, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5People digg it so they can reference it for later on when they do get one. Hense why this is a social-bookmarking site.....to bookmark things.
- lemac, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Agree with you but still...calm down...count backwards from 10 - 1 :)

What is Digg?
