- rauz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+42You don't believe in them? I can assure you, they exist...
- zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34MISTAKENLY?
Hardly. Apple knows folks comb through their binaries. I'm sure they realize folks were going to find this. If anything it is just something more to fuel the press... - lorensingley, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26Yeah I hear they are coming out with a new phone it's called the POZR.
- Masna, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29iPhone anyone? Macworld, come on!
- drakino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17The ROKR and RAZR both can display photos and videos. I find it much more believable Apple is doing something with either the existing capabilities on these phones, or a newer Motorolla phone. The "iPhone" rumor is right up there with the "iPod Video" device everyone seems certain is right around the corner for practically 2 years now.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19I don't think it's a mistake.
It just as well may have said: "We at Apple believe that digg crowd is like Sherlock Holmes, and we're aware that people aren't happy with the current phones in the market. So if we even drop the slightest hint that the iPhone is coming, which quite frankly we need to make, even if we not, as half the planet wants one. Then a digg user will quite easily find it, and post a story about it, and then the digg community will comment about it, only to widen the curiousity, and will cause further specultaion as to why we are taking so long to make it." - ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I think it would be smarter to release pre-Xmas 2006
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Seriously. I'd do exactly that. Fill it with misleading strings.
- mharvey, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20But just because two phones currently on the market don't do something doesn't mean that a) Apple hasn't been talking to Motorola devs to create phones that _do_ support these features, or b) that Apple wouldn't be putting such features into iTunes to play friendly with other devices via bluetooth or whatnot.
The only argument you could make from this is that Apple is adding in features so that they can give some company a usable SDK for their product. Look at other hardware drivers: I'm sure that littered through all sorts of Apple branded software there are plenty of references to hardware. That doesn't necessarily mean that Apple is going to manufacture that hardware, just that they would like that hardware to work on their platform.
Anyway, yes, the description does refer to "a phone that syncs pictures and video via iTunes," but if you look at the stuff in the article, the descriptions are completely generic. This is akin to finding the text "The printer '^1' is out of paper" and assuming that Apple is releasing a new printer (I think they're done with the printer business by now...) - SouthernDigger, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17I can get on board that hopefully this is iPhone but hopefully the fact that they are all error messages isn't a glimps into the future as well...
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11There's much more revealing iPhone stuff found in the first gen iPod nano Firmware (1.2)
http://digg.com/apple/iPhone,_iPod_messenger_clues_in_latest_iPod_software
The Motorola phones don't use the iPod OS at all, so there's no reason that strings like "kPhoneSignalStrength" could be found in the iPod Firmware. - bjammin, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18***** me drunk, how many times will this rumour appear on the front page?
- etandrib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"4301.070" = "The mobile phone "^1" cannot be used because it requires iTunes version ^2 or later. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes.";
This is why they put code like this in early… so when someone buys the phone and tries to plug it in without updating iTunes, it can tell them to upgrade the software. I just wish i knew what version of iTunes I need to use the iPhone. Now that would be a nice hint. ;-) - spiderfish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9iMob fits like a glove!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13honestly, you idiots will jump the gun on anything about apple.
- redwire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"The description says iTunes 7.0.1 refers to a phone that syncs pictures and video via iTunes... the ROKR and RAZR don't do that."
They do sync, pics, videos, audio and the calender under business tools. I can't speak for the ROKR but the Razr absolutely does via bluetooth to a Mac at the very least infact I did it right before posting this just to be sure I wasn't missing something.
They don't in the US version because the US versions are cursed with carriers from the seventh circle of hell who like nothing better then to cripple features then charge you to use something you had in the first place which really really sucks for you but it doesn't mean the features were never there. - EpicCrusadr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Whenever I see "ROKR" I think of Al Roker for some reason.
- Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@ snapya
Because it added nothing factual or humorous to the conversation.
Edit: Furthermore, when people say "I dont believe in cell phones" it sounds (intentionally or not) that they're trying to be different than the norm.
"I don't have a cell phone" sounds a little less snobbish and obnoxious. - 12340987, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5the razr and slvr both play mp4s:

-digg - SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hmm... I dont think they would call it "mobile phone" if it was the iPhone, just like they dont call the iPod "MP3 player". "Mobile phone" sounds like support for several 3rd party phones.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'll believe there's an Apple cell phone when I see it. Even as an Apple fan, this is getting tiresome. No digg.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4SyncTunes
http://www.nesfield.co.uk/synctunes/ - trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It is rather easy to program an application to sync images with a mobile phone...
Also keep in mind these error messages has parts that goes "Your phone doesn't support the movie format", which would imply that the service is not limited to a possible iPhone,. - srobbin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, MacWorld seems like the obvious release date, but why would they put the messages in iTunes so early on then? You'd figure they'd have another point release before January -- they know people pour over these releases looking for this stuff. Seems like maybe they'd do a release sooner. Wishful thinking...
- easycheez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oops
- aaryn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3iBlockedYou
- collywolly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is a version of the Razr that does iTunes, the V3i. (There are hundereds of different versions of the Razr these days). It is probably only available in certain countries....
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No pictures of an actual iPhone? Then it's still just _more_ rumour!
- livewirelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just don't get the appeal of merging together my ipod and my cellphone. I burn through my ipod battery because I am listening to it all the time. At least I can still make a phone call when it dies...
- Jangles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think of all the Mac rumors this is the most annoying and persistant one.
We all now it is coming sooner or later....but God damn I think there is speculation daily about this. - buzzmanfly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cingular's ROKR supports Itunes.
- weiran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Woo they're using the cool term "mobile phone" instead of the sucky "cell phone".
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Just be glad it doesn't say "The mobile phone cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 12.0, Tricentennial Edition"
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Calling people idiots is not a good way to start conversation but there is a point.
A phone should have non problematic, modern J2ME MIDP2 and/or a good stable OS like Symbian with excellent colour screen and durability.
As OS X user, I am very suspicious about those features. "Logo" will sell... - gelgod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Ireland
You're totally right. Apple has dropped so many hints in the past and while some are genuine mistakes, I'll bet that the majority are total PR moves in order to get us geeks excited about the next big Apple product. - TimRogers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The first time someone said that, it was funny. It no longer is, you've missed the boat.
- r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"The description says iTunes 7.0.1 refers to a phone that syncs pictures and video via iTunes... the ROKR and RAZR don't do that."
How about this for an idea. Apple had to make the sync agent anyway. That sync agent has to conform to some kind of standard, so rather than re-invent it later it was much easier to just include the picture/video syncing options right from the off. Especially as iTunes, will try and sync that content and the agent will just say "nope that device can't do video/pictures".
It does look like a lot of syncing agent/device management stuff in iTunes may have changed quite drastically (i.e. been re-written).
Often in software development it is more hassle to leave functionality out, rather than put it in. That could well be all it is. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't believe in Klisk. But somehow the possibility of Klisk intrigues me...
- JerodSlay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Does anyone not realize that there are phones out there with iTunes on them (Slvr). When you plug that phone into the computer, these are the messages that can show up. This has nothing to do with an iPhone.
- hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2put your money where your mouth is.
- lochness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My V3i plays videos and displays pictures..
- jeriqo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+299% chance it's better than all the phones I've been using so far so, yes, I'll buy eyes closed.
- bbxboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1""All existing content on the mobile phone ^1 will be replaced with content from your iTunes library.""
The carrier's ears just pricked up... somebody's going to be mad. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"I think it would be smarter to release pre-Xmas 2006"
I'm with you alllllll the way! - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just enjoy getting dugg down, honestly.
I know cell phones exist. I still don't believe in them! - dexharris, on 03/18/2009, -0/+0You're better off with Nokia ;)

http://all-about-mobile-phones.info/ - rafleming, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why is everyone referring to the ROKR and RAZR?
The "other" iTunes phone is not a RAZR... it's the SLVR. - HexInfinity, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I like Apple, but I want my nonrestricted .aac's. I want my Nokia n91.
- mharvey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How exactly did you search?
when I did:
strings -a /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Localized.rsrc | grep mobile
it produced:
The name of my mobile phone is:
.Automatically choose songs for my mobile phone
iTunes will automatically fill your mobile phone with a random selection of songs from your library. You may fill your mobile phone with a different selection of songs by pressing Autofill in the mobile phone playlist.
uAllows you to use your mobile phone as a removable disk, so that you can store any kind of file on your mobile phone.r
I can change the grep around to find other strings on that gizmodo page... - Altotus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I play MP4s on my RAZR V3 all the time, and I use the Slideshow app on the phone to show pictures -- clips and pictures of the kids, mostly. It's sort of my 21st century plastic fold of pictures of the kids previous generations kept in their wallets.
