- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37A 1000% increase when you have a few thousand users and a 1000% increase when you have a few million users is a hell of a difference.
- Dihuko, on 10/12/2007, -10/+38Looks like 2007 will be a great year for iPod+iTunes! :D
- SLP1111, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29"Welcome to the social." jokes are no longer funny on Digg- they had a nice run and there is no need to continue beating the dead horse. I declare "Welcome to the social." officially retired on Digg.
- DoTheFandango, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23Exactly, iTunes increased 1,222% from its already large fan base, as Zune increased 1,030% from its beginner fan base.
Do the math. - auxplage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Adding to this are iTunes gift cards. I think that many people just pick them up while waiting in line. It is an impulse buy.
- Visk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22This is a great day for DRM
- TheJoot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Well yeah. It's not as if their image is "cool"- if anything they need to fight it. There's a reason the Microsoft logo cannot be seen on the Zune box or adverts.
- reldruh, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22Hopefully next _week_ will be a great week for iPod+iTunes!
- shelbygt33, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17I'm an iPod fan as well, but right after that came "Still, Zune traffic rose 1,030% on Christmas compared with the previous Monday, the company stated"
So they have a much MUCH smaller install base, yet their increase over the previous Monday saw a similar increase. So all this really shows is that everyone was online on Christmas typing in their gift card numbers. - lopla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10What's a Zune?
- robdazomba, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Bad analogy. Windows comes pre-installed by default on a majority of PCs out there so consumers aren't always making a conscious choice to use it. It's just there so there's little point in questioning it or considering alternatives. On the other hand, people buying iPods and buying music from iTunes are all pretty much making a conscious choice right down the line. You're not forced to buy music from iTunes if you buy an iPod. Likewise, there are no market forces coercing people to buy iPods when another player might suit their needs as well (unlike the situation with PCs.)
Face it--the iPod and iTunes are a massive success and not even MS can undo that. Why do people work so hard to deny that simple fact? Because it's Apple? WTF? - xbair, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12w00t! Stevemas is on the 9th this year!
- minoss, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14iTunes has been around a lot longer and gone through many more revisions. Both the Zune and Zune's store are first generation only came out very recently. I don't see how this is that much of a surprise.
- forensicmeteobo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9FTA:
Hitwise, which monitors Internet traffic trends, reported a 413% increase in traffic to iTunes on the holiday in 2006 over 2005. The company attributed the growth to new iPod ownership and reported a traffic increase of 1,222% on Christmas compared with the previous Monday.
iTunes defeated Microsoft's Zune with a visit ratio of 30-to-1, according to Hitwise. Still, Zune traffic rose 1,030% on Christmas compared with the previous Monday, the company stated.

What does 'traffic' mean? To their website? Downloads of iTunes? Hits on pages in iTunes? - dgaspard, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11I like my Zune. As soon as someone who writes a program that strips all the drm off of shared songs, it's going to rock.
- firemillen2, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10iFanboys dominate Digg. Wonder how many of these diggers work in cupertino's marketing dept. Everyone ***** knows that most of the songs on their iPods are stolen.
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -13/+18Yeah. With that lack of money and marketing power Microsoft has, they sure are doing well. [/sarcasm]
- Radan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That sentence made absolutely no sense in so many ways...
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11"Maybe you're right, maybe not, but the public has chosen its favorite and it's over with. The iPod won. Deal with it."
That's what's wrong with people. Why can't their be more than one product to choose from? Why do we have these non-compatible music DRM formats? Both MS and Apple are guilty. I'll never buy music online while this absurdity persists. - bbardlbradd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7If Windows would be decent enough to have quality software made for it*
- Odiwan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6And no matter how good the outlook, the stock price will go down, the smart folks will buy because it is unfounded, and then they will go up again a few days later. Obvious, easy way to cash in.
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Very very misleading submitter.
The 1222% increase was on christmas day compared to the preceding monday.
Lets consider that for a moment. Wouldn't you expect more people to use iTunes on christmas day after so many people got brand new ipods? Now compare that day to.... ANY GIVEN WORK DAY, which is what the preceding monday is. Of course you are going to see an increase. In fact, compare any holiday/weekend when people have free time to build up their music collection to any work day and you are going to see an "increase." - crees!, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Marked inaccurate as the numbers represented are only of the hits on a webpage, not the actual downloads/purchases from both services. Even tagging the number of hits as "new users" would be inaccurate and full of assumption.
- anonym41414, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Can't you buy Itunes music for the Zune?"
Nope. iTunes music can only be played on iPods, or on computers with iTunes. - r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah but this isn't a prediction, it's a FACT!
- chris4404, on 10/12/2007, -12/+16I don't really care about "buying" songs off iTunes, so I bought a Zune. I have a 4th gen iPod and its been good to me but I wanted video and wasn't impressed with the latest from Apple.
Digg me down if you want but I'm happy with my Zune. - ronmexico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You must work for Universal.
- Clemenceau, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15It's more popular than Zune... for now.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5DRM = Digital Recording-Industry Madness, it's not actually Apple's fault, they simple have to play by the studios rules. DRM has never effected me much, I can Rip purchased music to CD's in any format I want, where's the problem?
- r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"So what's Apple's excuse for relying on a 5-year old design? They still crank out basically the same thing."
Don't think so, Apple have steadily refined the design of the iPod with every generation.
Addition fo Photos, Podcasts, Video, Clickwheel to name a few. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4is it possible, or maybe likely, that microsoft, by offering such an appallingly bad mp3 device, has actually upped apples percieved street cred and had the effect of increasing iPod's marketshare?
mmmmm could be. - battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3iTunes is to the Zune store as iPod is to the Zune
What is so ***** hard about that? - Pxtl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, that explains why the iTunes store (and, unfortunately for me, the iTunes updating system needed to get my wife's Nano to work with the new dock/stereo I bought her) was crawling along like a snail in the holiday season.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah exactly, who knows, Microsoft might sell 80 Million Zune's this year! Ha ha :P
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11The irony of these comments just kill me. You sound like all those Mac users in the mid-90s claiming the Mac was better than the far more popular Windows 95. Maybe you're right, maybe not, but the public has chosen its favorite and it's over with. The iPod won. Deal with it.
- ShitStorm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3exactly. lol
- r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"You cannot have more than 100% of anything."
Don't be a tit. You can't have more than 100% of anything, true. But you can have a greater than 100% increase in something. For example if something is double the size, it is 200% bigger.
Now go back to your maths class and stop acting like a *****! - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The real question is why the heck are you defending the Zune?
- ShitStorm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Itunes is way too branded. If you ask me, Microsoft waited way too long to do this. I understand that in marketing having two company's fighting for sales can often be better then one company cornering the market. For example: Pepsi-Coke, Microsoft-Macintosh, McDonalds-Burger King, etc. But in this case there are way too many shakey circumstances at hand. For instance, the timing was way to poor. Itunes had already reached a mark of a half of a billion downloads and are presently counting down to a billion. Microsoft was a bit slow on this. Secondly, iTunes software is provided for PC users. Most PC users have already been using itunes and have no need to learn the process of a new song downloading software. Thirly, The Ipod has been so over exposed and marketed that kids at school already look at the Ipod as the new cool thing to have. Zune just appears as a generic form of the "cool" thing to these kids. If a parent went out and bought there child a Zune for christmas instead of an Ipod, I'm assuming that child was a very unhappy camper. It's just not the "in" thing. zune can only be marketed to two people. The rebellious counsumers that just want to be different and/or the generic consumers that just look for the "other" thing to buy. If zune were to make there songs cheaper, like say, $.69 a download, that would help, but again they would just be labeled the "cheap" product. Microsoft is way to late on this and zune won't go anywhere because of this. most of the older crowd is still happy with CD's. The larger marketing share is the youth. They've already been force fed the ipod.
- r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Yes.. it makes that 1000% increase when you have a few million users suspect. Or did iTunes really sell over a billion songs yesterday?"
Just so you know, "traffic" does NOT equal "purchased song/video", although it can ALSO be that. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 geekee says:
"Yeah, I'd much rather look at a monstrous click wheel, than a big video screen"
Have they come out with a Zune with a big video screen? Last time I heard it was 3-inches as compared to the iPod's 2.5-inch. Same resolution for both devices. IMO, both suck for video content. When Apple comes out with one at least 4-inches I might consider it. When MS comes out with one at least 4-inches, will work without jumping through hoops with Macs, stop forcing me to give them free loans with the Zune Marketplace points system, use the WiFi "feature" for something more useful than squirting songs to another Zune user that self-destructs in 3 days or 3 plays, then I might consider that one too. Heck, I'd even buy it in brown. - r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"What does 'traffic' mean? To their website? Downloads of iTunes? Hits on pages in iTunes?"
Traffic means page views on the store, purchases, downloads etc. Basically, anything to do with accessing the store. - nkassi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Better yet. People hack iTunes to make it work with the Zune. ;0) (just kidding).
- chriswo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually it is only 100% bigger...but it is 200% of the size.
- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"A 1000% increase when you have a few thousand users and a 1000% increase when you have a few million users is a hell of a difference."
Yes.. it makes that 1000% increase when you have a few million users suspect. Or did iTunes really sell over a billion songs yesterday? - r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The RIO products were quite good. Sad they went away."
That's because they weren't good enough. - mansko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The download percentages are indeed comparable even with the iPod being older because it is a ratio... comparing the two Monday's download rates.... The iTunes Store already having a massive userbase still grew by an incredible percentage... and the zune with its small userbase grew. It's proportionate.
- punkrock4life, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4the m$ fanboy trolls are out today modding down all anti-zune comments!!! LAME.
- plgonzalez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no *****!
- selectodude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who said it was a 1000x increase? You're just a moron.
