iTunes Podcast Top 10 Rankings Explained
chriskzoo.blogspot.com — According to Adam Curry's 7/23 Daily Source Code, the iTunes Podcast top 10 is not based on the number of subscriptions a podcast has, but rather on the number of new subscribers in the past 24 hours. This explains why podcasts such as our favorites Diggnation and TWiT can rocket to the top of the charts...
- 519 diggs
- digg it
- adjacentidea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wouldn't it make more sense if it were based on total subscriptions?
- Cyber@, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Adam Curry is just jealous...hehe !!
Diggnation and TWIT rock's
It should be a combination of different things like old and new subscriptions, popularity, number of downloads and if the subscribers continue to download... and others... - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nah, I don't think Curry really cares - he's the "Podfather" LOL. He did mention that he didn't even care that people "begged" for rankings, but I got the impression that he would rather people didn't.
- geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with cyber. There really needs to be more to it than this.
- Solo203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea, i doubt he cares
- suMMx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow I didn't know that was how they ranked it, pretty lame though
- stilesja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the idea of the last 24 hour ratings. It shows the blogs that are picking up new users and sort of a "What's hot" in podcasts, but I would like to see by total subscriptions.
- Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's retarded. If 1 million users listen to Twit and no one else signs up that week and 1 person subscribes to a new Podcast they win? That's just dumb.
- Leonaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0stopher gets my nod.
- shooby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this CAN'T be the ONLY way itunes does it
- analogue40, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0At first i thought this was a bad ranking system, but on second thought it'll keep a healthy rotation and give new/up and coming podcasts a chance to get some exposure. I do agree there needs to be an overall top ten though.
- ChrisTN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a little surprising at first, but not a problem. This is how music charts work, after all: top 40 (or 100, or whatever) charts measure the sales/play of songs in the previous week, NOT since the beginning of recorded music. That's intuitive and what people expect, so why wouldn't Apple do the same thing?
- GnatMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I actually prefer this method, mostly because great shows like Skepticallity get a fair shot to be #2 or #3, even if it's only for a couple of weeks.
- jedi55555, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The problem with that theory ChrisTN is that the podcast are still getting their playtime. Podcasts are more like TV shows in which they produce ongoing content. I like the idea of showing the most podcasts subscribed to in the last 24 hours, I think that there should be a "What's Hot" section for that. But that is just me.
- SKetchEtch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I hear that www.nobodylikesonions.com is one of the best out there, and it's on the iTunes top 100!
- Bandito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No no no, Podcasts... are like onions. They have layers. No that's not it.
The problem is that the "Top Ten" only judges for a finite amount of time. Kind of like music charts work. One week could show that is the most popular, however in the long haul an album like Michael Jackson's Thriller may have had the most sales (equal to subscriptions in Podcasting) of all time. - Bandito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^ man, my grammar sucked on that post. My apologies.
- Killer_k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i think it should be done diffent cause it bad for all the other podcasts that are new that have no change in there rateing and that suxs they should a voteing system that would be better dont you think
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's clear that they need two rankings - a "Hot List" as mentioned above, say the most subscribed to in the past week, and then a "Most subscribed" to, or some way to sort the podcasts based on true popularity, not just passing fad.
- drummerboy3747, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i agree with the two lists thing i don't know what they were thinking with the first list and the most subsriptions in the past 24 hours but keep subscribing on every computer with iTunes u have access to!!!!!!! yee-haa
-drummerboy - JetwingX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think most of you are forgetting that iTunes is a music store. it only just recently became a Podcast distro. and besides, if you want something like that vote at http://www.podcastalley.com/
Apples ranking system keeps it all fresh (except for the days podfinder comes out ^^) - bonedust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The #1 spot on itunes has been "itunes new music" is a total crock they are just trying to sell more music make a button for this podcast and let the real podcasters get ranked.
Diggnation and TWIT rocks
Techtv fan since 97!!!!!!!!! - OwlBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i agree, this is kind of a silly way to do it.
It would work better if this complimented a list that was total subscribers.
-Owl - bigsnit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does iTunes publish, or make available, any of the podcast subscription numbers ?
- ephealy, on 10/02/2008, -0/+0The URL is broken.
