Do you really think this is fad? Open your eyes, this is the beginning to a whole new era. Think about it. Some TV shows never take off due to the fact that they have a ***** time slot. Now, it's a whole new ball game where time doesn't matter. Not to mention the possibility of better quality shows being produced since shows that are crappy wont get the green without being downloaded. A fad? Hardly, you are looking at a revolution. - daveshenk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If only Apple would start selling this content in full HD I would definitely drop my cable service altogether and just buy the shows I actually want to watch. Between this and Netflix announcing that they're going to stock HD-DVD or BluRay (whatever format wins, I don't care), I would be so happy to stop paying Time Warner $120 a month to have some good stuff to watch on my new HD set....
Apple, you are so close... yet so far away. Here's my wishlist.
- Mac Mini with DVI out, a good sound card, an Intel chip, huge hard drive and Front Row
- HD quality downloads
- Season long subscriptions to shows I like (24, Sopranos)
You'd be serving all my content needs and wants, and saving me a boatload of cash vs a cable subscription. - patmfitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Imagine watching a show with a cliffhanger, immediately followed by an ad: "Find out what happens next week... or, for $1.99, download next week's episode right now on iTunes."
- 777twist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I bought a NANO when they came out because I really didin't like the size of the 4G Ipod (or earlier ones). However, when the video version came out...I jumped on board as it was something I could justify for being that big (to play videos).
Now, I have bought every episode of the Office...and I can tell you I won't be stopping any time soon...it's a great show (to me) and it has great replayability (again to me). Other shows I would probably buy is the Family Guy (I don't care if they steal there material...they make it more funny)...outside of those...I'm not sure. Someone mentioned "24" and I guess I might if I really had to see the next episode before it's normal airing. But I think I would only buy shows that I would want to watch over and over. Actually I did buy the SNL Jimmy Fallon show, but it wasn't as good as I thought...although it was cheaper than paying 15 - 20 bucks for it on DVD.
As for this being a Fad or the Future... I think it's the latter. Maybe you all aren't taking advantage of it...but I use it in the bathroom (while I'm doing my business), I have used in my car while waiting for someone...used it during lunch when I didn't want to go out. It's great, I won't even probably take my PSP next time on a trip as this is just too easy to carry. It never leaves my pocket so I always have these videos with me.
As a test, I have some 3D animation tutorials (that I bought on DVD) and I wanted to see if they would work in the format of the IPOD (meaning: would they be watchable) and I have to tell you, so far I have watch 3 lessons and they are pretty good. Maybe when they get into the real complex stuff will I find it to be a problem, but right now...it's golden.
Another thing that they can use this for... How many times has FOX canceled a series on a cliffhanger. Well, why not at least finish off the story line and end the show correctly...even if you do want to pull it off the air. Then it becomes more of a Pay Per View type thing.
And even another use for this is when you miss an episode... I don't know how many times I miss episodes due to "rain fade" or incorrect scheduling (not by me) or power failure... Shoot, I WOULD SOOOOOO run to Itunes to buy that episode I missed.
My 2 cents...
Well, it was more like a dime. - Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Of course, this makes sense. Episodes are finished LONG before they air (Just look at TMN in Canada airing Stargate Atlantis something like 4 weeks before they air in the US on SciFi, the channel that actually makes them). Some shows also make a lot more off an iTunes download than they would from one more viewer of ad revenue. So if you can give an incentive for people to download instead of watch (without impacting the televised version), why not?
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can pretty much watch all of Daily Show's segments, after they're aired, on Comedy Central's website "Mother Load" viewer. Commercial-free too, I believe, and you can search segments.
- nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i was watching The N, and they were saying that the next episode of South of Nowhere would be shown on Friday(as usual) or I could get it from iTunes on Thursday. Meh, I dont need pay 2 bucks to see a show I could watch the next day for 'free'. But if it was Family Guy, I would probably buy it.
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's awesome I downloaded Lost and Jackass from there.
- CaptainCalculus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lets see, I can see a show in the ***** proprietary format Apple uses 2 days early if I am lucky, or I can wait about one to two hours after the show airs and get a hdtv video of the show, or if I am feeling really awesome, I will wait 2 days and get a hr-hdtv video of the show.
I have a dream that all my friends will be able to gather together at one time and watch a show together instead of 2 days early, on time or 2 days afterward. I mean really, it is too much to ask to watch a free show at the time when it is released? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A message board post is supposed to be news? Where is the real Apple press release?
- tkking1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very good idea on apples part to get more and more people to buy the shows. very very smart :)
- br0ken1128, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would be thrilled if The Daily Show would get on the iTunes bandwagon .. I'd love that!
- 777twist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I forgot to mention something. I have an HDTV and although I only have SD signals coming in my TV viewing is pretty darn good.
But watching stuff on the Ipod is a lot cleaner...it's actaully very good. So those people on here talking about quality, I'm not really sure what they are talking about.
Now, it's TV out may not be as good, but I haven't used that yet. And that's really not the point of the Ipod. - panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@jkfan - I think you're dead wrong. I'm currently paying almost $70/month for my DirecTV connection. I probably TiVo about 1 show per weeknight, (3 on Fridays, of course) over the Sat. I also TiVo some stuff OTA. At $1.99 a show that not only comes in at a lower cost, but it also allows me to hand some of the profit to a company I like rather than a company I hate. As soon as there is a big enough library on iTunes, my HD DirecTiVo is going up for sale.
- VesperDEM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This would be great if the quality of the download was at least that of a TiVo at it's lowest quality setting. Pity it's much lower than that. Sure it looks great on the iPod Video screen, but looks like crap on a television, probably really bad on an HD/LCD/Plasma television.
When shows start showing up at DVD quality for download and sale, then I'll get excited. - dognose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sure, it's still a tiny fraction, but if they make more profits per individual, with out loosing more that that person, then they will make more profits on the whole. simple math.
With Steve running things at Disney, I think you'll see a lot more stuff from abc and disney. Other networks will follow. - randal2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ugh... why pay for something that will be free tomorrow? and further more, by placing an actual price tag on the show, watch for NBC/CBS etc to sue people for sharing downloaded TV episodes and for them to press for the annihilation of PVR and DVR, without a fee per record basis.
Give and inch people and watch them take your wallet...
my advice, boycott it now. - gumpy5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now start releasing Lost episodes early and they'll be raking in the money (not that they aren't already).
- Aezarath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its Jan 29... where is the link to the free drawn together?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well I think the Video quality is good. it's 100x's better than that of Google's theirs is just plain *****. I look on iTunes and all of the shows are $1.99; WTF??
- TheRealStyro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Adds to the daveshenk list...
- Ability to burn episodes to [BD-/HD-] DVD - acidronin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now all they need to get is some [adult swim] and TBS shows. I wish iTunes could get some anime but i don't think that will happen.
- Phats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I find free sites like http://www.liketelevision.com to be much more interesting than what is or will be available on traditional broadcasting. Quirky, bizarre, hard to find and campy content is more appealing to me than the next episode of "Scrubs". Their model (add supported), is the only type that will survive. This ITunes model will fail. Unlike audio tracks, video is too readily available over traditional networks, and few will pay for the luxury of on demand. Even hospitality based VoD is going ad supported. Welcome to the brave new world of narrowcasting.
- Mr.Glass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And so it continues. the age of people running home at night to catch their tv show is coming to an end. i only hope that someone else makes a decent service before apple takes over the world.
- pothananunkoi, on 12/14/2008, -0/+0Nice, i like this possibility. It's like downloading illegally, only that it's legal and for a smal fee. great idea of itunes guys.
http://www.hiphop-sms.com/rnb-radio.html - lico05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I think they should have a choice between shows for $1.99 and the same shows with ads for free"
I like that idea-- - SunAlex, on 08/29/2008, -0/+0nice, like iTunes. hope soon have.)

http://www.colinfrizzell.com - jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe they should concentrate on DECENT QUALITY VIDEO before they start getting fancy?
- disruptor108, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i don't see any free episodes....all the drawn together's cost $1.99
- cool4u2view, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't forget it's 1.99...plus TAX...
- MikhoohkiM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if only some one could talk to the RIAA
- rebattim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think they should have a choice between shows for $1.99 and the same shows with ads for free, I would be willing to watch ads to get TV shows for free, we watch ads on TV anyway, well those of us without a DVR.
- greekgoat91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the drawn together was released today but for 1.99
- digdugdig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0itunes is the sux0rz. And the quality stinks anyway. I'll buy tv shows - but only if they are comparable or better than the xvids I download for free.
- Symblized, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now that's actually value.
- YSmithlady, on 09/26/2008, -0/+0Now, a new game of ball is everything where the time does not matter. Not to mention the possibility of one better quality of sample than takes place since is bad custom to obtain the green one without being unloaded. If some here interesting i find and use this http://nikamovie.com/ recource for movies news
- tibman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0patmfitz - genius
- Diggernaut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@patmfitz
that would be awesome for shows like 24. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0STOP POSTING ITUNES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you *****'s!!!!!
they are money hungry bastards! - illegal_op, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I love this idea, congrats Apple I will be using this.
