- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+63Anyone want to wager just how many more years this music-DRM thing will go on before the people enforcing it realize it's pointless? Or before most people are computer-literate enough that nobody has DRM'ed files anymore? I can't see this going on for more than three more years.
- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+46I think the RIAA and MPAA will continue to push for DRM as long as the RIAA and MPAA exists.
If there's a way to convince new artists to sign with independent labels then eventually the RIAA and MPAA will no longer exist. - RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+44It'll go on for years because the people in charge are ***** dinosaurs. Not that I care, because there are millions of geeks just waiting to thwart whatever DRM ***** they think of next :)
- Phr00t, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33DRM will get much harder to crack when hardware gets involved. Yes, software-based DRM isn't going to last, but hardware based DRM might be huge...
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22this isn't an OS we're talking about.
- skoles, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Seriously, don't buy it if you don't like the DRM. Why go through all the trouble when it's just as easy to send the statement that you refuse to buy DRM'd media.
Purchase the CD in person (and get a far superior sounding rip) or just download it illegally. - gconeen, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24http://duggmirror.com/apple/iTunes_7_DRM_Already_Cracked_2/
- computerdude33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Dude, it's a mirror of the site.
- dvgrhl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Well, look how long they have been waging the war on drugs. I don't think they will ever stop trying to implement DRM. I think it will have to come to a point where consumers will make a stand against it before they will stop trying to force it on us. And I have little faith that will happen en mass.
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Actually this is not 100% true. iTUNES 7 does use a different (albiet slight) technique, and different memory offset. So it was updated, but just slightly. Nothing more than MSNs WMA 8 to 8.5 as an example. This is meant to stop the common person, not anyone with half a brain.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"This is meant to stop the common person, not anyone with half a brain"
I think I'm offended by that. I don't know. - Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Don't like rootkits? Use the Shift key.
- kuribo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@dvgrhl
Sadly I have to agree with you. The only thing that can stop these companies is if the public at large, and not just a relatively small percentage (such as the digg crowd, sorry but it's true) stage an outright boycott. This is almost definitely never going to happen. What people on digg and slashdot and the like often forget is that a huge majority of people out there have no idea what is going on technologically. If their new music CDs don't play on their computers, they'll buy a stereo. If they can't rip tracks for thier iPods, they'll buy the CD AND purchase the songs online.
Again, personally I love hearing that whatever latest DRM has been cracked. I don't support these companies, for reasons that everyone here will list. But, I try to be realistic, and honestly, 99% of people will take whatever the **AA dishes out. They just want the movie or album that they or their kids "have to have". - compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'd rather not buy a rootkit'd cd. I think you know what option I'll choose then, by process of elimination!
- dayquil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6far more people buy music from itms than would ever strip drm from the things they buy, or even know it's a possibility. sure, they'll continue patching holes as possible, but this smalltime cracking is not nearly as big of a hazard to the industry as you're making it sound. make a device that does it by plugging in to the usb connection inbetween the ipod and the computer? now maybe you're onto something.
- JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6... no.
- iPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I wish we could "My #1" comments. wphj's would be up there on my list, lol.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Anyone want to wager just how many more years this music-DRM thing will go on before the people enforcing it realize it's pointless?"
I believe it will go on forever. 95% of people dont have the energy or know-how to deDRM their media. They just accept it and watch/listen to "their" media. - Libb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This isn't about JHymn, that's been a dead (or near-dead) project for months now. This is about QTFairUse / myFairTunes, both of which were announced and spread via the Hymn project's forums.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think the issue of ALL OF MY SONGS SKIPPING is a more important factor as of now.
- Joeymad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just for your information, YES iPod Games are DRM'd. I bought Vortex and a friend of mine bought MiniGolf. We swapped files, and I cannot play his MiniGolf game, he cannot play my Vortex game. I have taken apart the .ipg file and swapped .bin.sinf file that contains the purchaser's name. This tricked iTunes into thinking that I own the MiniGolf game and it synced it to my iPod. However, upon starting, the game claims it is out of date, and the version is no longer supported.
Back on topic: The DRM in the .m4p and the .ipg files seem to be very different. Taking a random guess (an educated guess at that), I would say NO, QTFairUse6 does not work on iPod Games. - iPirate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5mzkw, please go play in traffic.
- Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Exactly.
If we use this program for fair use (a.k.a. Transferring to backups/non-iPod MP3 players), it would have no impact on sales. We're not going to upload the files to a file-sharing network, are we? - JeremyBanks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"You are a sad, strange little man, and you have my pity."
- skoles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@compu73rg33k
Scared about rootkits? Don't have AutoRun enabled or boot into Linux and rip it. - r2builder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Anyone know if this works for the games & movies?
- phpfreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oops... replied to wrong comment and digg wont let me delete it... sorry.
- kris33, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Well. Fairplay(the iTunes DRM) wasn't updated with iTunes 7. It just uses the old iTunes 6 drm. This update only fixed the compatibility problems witch of course happends with such a big update as iTunes 7 was.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't be fooled, Apple could care less :). Apple only does DRM because they have to.
- aj3289, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That is true, but it's an analog hole. You lose some quality everytime you do that. Just depends on how good you want your music to sound.
- scubasteve03, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4http://duggmirror.com/apple/iTunes_7_DRM_Already_Cracked_2
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I think I'm offended by that. I don't know."
Yes, you are. - stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Could someone provide a link to something actually useful? This just links to some random post, with no links, talking about how the people at Hymn cracked the DRM, which they didn't.
- krouskop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I assume he's talking about the new games for the iPod... which I don't think are currently DRM'd, but it's really not that stupid of a question.
- tehbishop, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@mywhitenoise:
well Apple is about as successful as M$ is at keeping their DRM unbroken so I guess it's a draw ... - bdawg923, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2http://www.duggmirror.com/apple/iTunes_7_DRM_Already_Cracked_2
Just change digg to duggmirror. - lazygregg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2where do i dl this working itunes 7 version drm crack?
- RedShoulder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1After looking at the titles of the other two submitted stories it seems the title is the 'eye-catch' people latch onto and decide to read further.
http://digg.com/tech_news/iTunes_7_patches_QTFairUse_2_2_QTFairUse_2_3_patches_iTunes_7
http://digg.com/tech_news/QTFairUse6_unDRM_for_latest_iTunes
This has been an issue since the beginning of Digg when others have written in complaining that their stories never made it to the home page. There are so many stories that Diggers sort through a good title is needed. If the content of the story is good then so should the title.
The simple fact is that "iTunes 7 DRM Already Cracked" is a short, direct title that grabs attention. - brianmost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Edit: Nevermind.

- Joeymad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1for those who would like to try it out:
http://hymn-project.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1553
Newest at the moment is 2.4.. but looking at v2.3's notes:
---
2006-09-13 Version 2.3
Experimental test version
Buffered dumping and writing to disk - improved speed and reduced memory usage
Disables sound output for iTunes 6.0.x for faster dumping (no Tunebite sound driver needed)
Experimental iTunes 7.0 support (realtime only - no fast dumping yet)
---
This gives me hope that the iTunes 7.0 support can be modified/updated to have faster than realtime dumping, just as iTunes 6.0.x has. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If thats the case, why was my first Ipod DRM free (the very first model). Also remember that Apple doesn't copy protect OSX, ever. They would prefer not having to use DRM, but if they didn't they'd get sued like never before.
- DarkHack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hmmmm
- noclip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The thread ID on hymn-project.org forums is 1555.
- Joeymad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is in the project-hymn forums, this is probably why it was said that Hymn was fixed to work on iTunes 7 when it is QTFairUse6 that has been fixed to work on iTunes 7.
http://hymn-project.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1553 - noclip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1whfsdude:
That is the piece of software this story is about. Since it was moved from Python to C, there is no transcoding or quality loss and it preserves metadata.
It is actually a very good way to do it because the exploit can't really be patched. - whfsdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1noclip,
That's actually not jhymn and it's not cracking the AES encryption or fetching the keys from the iTunes servers like the previous versions. It's just grabbing a memory dump which is rather lame. There also is a bit of quality loss (probably won't hear it though). It also is unable to transfer over the meta data (like album art). - noclip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is more of an exploitation of the "analog hole" than a crack. In fact, this has nothing to do with the cracking DRM. This software is basically an advanced way of playing your songs and recording the unprotected bitstream as it passes between iTunes and the OS through memory. There is no feasible way to protect against this, so this technique will work any version of iTunes (until Vista, which lets the OS understand protected bitstreams, closing the hole).
- whfsdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think it exists. There is no announcement posted on in the hymn forums and no jhymn update.
- MadMan459, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1JHymn is for Mac. It's built upon the Hymn project, which is for Windows.
Hymn has cracked iTunes 7
JHymn is stuck for some reason.
It is not inaccurate -
