iTunes 6.02: Now with VIDEO sharing
notd.blogs.com — With all the attention on the new ministore presentation, no one seems to have noticed that iTunes 6.02 enables video-sharing to your local network. Whether it's intended for an upcoming home media appliance or not I don't know, but it brings videos up to par with music.

- digg it
- tkking1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2did not know that. once i steal Tiger will check it out digg engaged!
- Markdoggin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great Story, Surprised had gone unnoticed, although I haven't yet tried to stream anything to my other CPU, gonna try now. +Digg
The Windows version shares as follows:
Prefereneces | Sharing | Share Selected Playlists | Videos - Markdoggin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Streaming Definitely works from 6.0.2 --> 6.0.2; I attempted to Stream 6.0.2 --> 6.0.1 to no avail, apparently this is a new feature. It seems this is how apple is gonna 'get er done'
++++++++++++++DIGG++++++++++++ - Markdoggin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Note: Does not work with purchased Video from ITMS
- DannyEngesser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems to only work with video imported after you install 6.02... so, for a podcast for instance, unsubscribe one that does not work, delete the video file, and re-download it... I tried it, and it works... probably works the same for purchased video.
- CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome.... now give me a Mac Mini DVR so I can stream to it from my Intel iMac and I'm a happy man.
- RichMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oh, how do you import a video into iTunes? I simply tried dragging an avi I downloaded to my library and it didn't do anything. I also tried import.
Take note that i'm on a mac and it is completely updated. - iambigred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Loads of peoples shares appear on my iTunes as I'm on a university network, none have 'Video' playlists so I presume they don't have 6.02. Cool find, digged
- SorenG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool.
- Mininday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, I can understand imported videos, but aren't purchased videos a wee to small for your television?
- super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mininday: "Ok, I can understand imported videos, but aren't purchased videos a wee to small for your television?"
Actually, the size scales pretty well for a SD television. Looks equivalent to medium quality on a TiVo, if that helps. - hettybembler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Man, I posted this twice in the last two weeks!

Thanks a lot! - stoog3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Guess we weren't ready for your wisdom.

"Oh, how do you import a video into iTunes? I simply tried dragging an avi I downloaded to my library and it didn't do anything. I also tried import."
If you want to convert your AVI to play on your mac Itunes... use any of the following mac based apps. Do a seach on google for them... you can find them easily.
iSquint
Handbrake
MoviesForMyIpod
OpenShiiva
Most of these are to get video ready for ipod format but that will be the size and format you ant for iTunes... give them a try. - super_structure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1neofactor: I'm not sure it's wise to encourage Digg as a help forum. Anytime your advice includes "Do a seach on google for them."(sic) you're probably wasting your time helping anyway.
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+026 days until february 15/macbooks!!!
- VladDrac, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Wow, that Apple is SO damn creative. You mean I can put something on my network and have others access it?! Wow, that's ***** awesome. I sure wish I used iTunes!
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe this partially explains Apple's interest in invalidating Burst's streaming video patents...and why I've invested in Burst >:)
- zachgc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, have any of you guys had problems with itunes crashing on startup after installing 6.0.2? I have a feeling it has something to do with the quicktime installation because it just seems to completely skip over it when I installed itunes.
- infiniteparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It appears that only videos imported with 6.02 will be shared. I've re imported my videos and they all seem to stream nicely on a 100mb network.
This perhaps can be tied-in with the fact you can now select TV Show as a Video Type, while in 6.01 you only had the option of Music Video or Movie. (without using Lostify or AtomicParsley) - FourDoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah but re-importing your music videos with 6.02 changes the media type to back to "movie" when you re-import.
Is there an easy way to change the video flag from "movie" to "music video" or "tv show" without having to manually go through each video file's property? In other words, is there a way to batch change "movie" videos to "music video" like you can with album, artist, year, etc?- percussionking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This program will allow you to batch change video kind, etc.

- creativebug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey thats a NEAT find man...dugg!
- qwerty967, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has anyone tried it with MyTunes yet?
- moonmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can see the video's but it doesn't seem to play over my wireless connection, doesn't even try to play.
- sackU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OMFG....
THANK YOU DIGG!
I had to check and my suicide girls podcasts are available over the network..... That is not cool. I need to be able to NOT share my videos.
Sorry Suicide Girls, I must unsubscribe to your podcast (at work) - neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol a nice little easter egg
- briarpatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, they fixed things so that I can't play my iTunes music on Linux now (Hymn no longer strips DRM from iTunes 6) so I'll be real sure to trust them on video stuff. Uh huh.
- eobanb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0sackU, you do realise you can select to only share certain playlists, or not share any files at all? idiot
- xjeffx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, and 6.02 also prevents you from uploading videos to your iPod that are high-res, even though they fall within the published specs of the iPod. I'm glad I have two computers because otherwise I'd have no way to upload my videos.
- neofactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@super_structure
Thanks for the tip... but I actually did NOT do the look up for them.. because their questions was so lame... I just gave them a push.. if they actually did a search for the apps I suggested they will find more than me just holding their hand to the source. I took a long pause when posting... and did what I did intentionally. - abhibeckert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FourDoor: you can batch process items by selecting the ones you want to change, then do a standard get info.
- sersch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0works with mt-daapd as a server, too.
- DooDah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0dooooood you could share any file through a network without futin ***** itunes which is just pure evil: open your eyes you fools, only cockknockers use itunes....LOL.....no seriously do you think its that good, technology thats been in operating systems for ages, but now *APPLE* have made a *PRETTY* program its amazing foooooool.....all you need to know is more programs less performance ypou allready have the power to that so throw that ***** away now..........
- redrighthand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only video program you need for apple is MPEG Stream Clip. This program will convert any to anything
