I used to have the same view as you - "ugh, iTunes, I like Winamp!" but then I saw the light...
1) You aren't forced to sort or organize your music in any way you don't want to. Just because your Genre ID3 tags were messed up doesn't mean it's iTunes fault - you can always view by Artist, title, album, etc.
2) I love iTunes for the ability to rate my songs and then build smart playlists that update on the fly on my ipod. This is the #1 reason I use iTunes, as I have a lot of music I've collected over the years and I'm sorting through the crap (rated 1 or 2 stars so it doesn't get synced to the ipod) and decent music (3 or 4 stars) or my favorites (5 stars). The only other music library manager that handles this is J River media center, but last version I tried doesn't support syncing album art. - patmfitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the mini-store is easily hidden (Edit > Hide Ministore)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow! Now you can listen to music on not just your computer speakers, but also through multiple AirTunes (Airport Express) connections SIMULTANEOUSLY. I had no idea this was coming, and it is a welcome addition.
- RiddickRom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bloated? absolutely, it's using 50mb memory and 50mb swap here just doing nothing but downloading. It is still hands down the best way to manage podcasts though that I've found. I like the store being right there too. I haven't switched my music listening all to iTunes because it can be flaky. My Winamp 5.1 (takes native advantage of my surround sound) is still king for mp3's. For watching "other" video, I have to use Media player, media player classic, vlc and occassionally I'll use Crystal player.
If the updates keep on making iTunes more stable though, I could be persuaded to move all my media there. Big IF though.
So far I'm finding the video podcasts in iTunes are more responsive while downloading but they still hang if you try and resize the floating window and freeze for a time if you go full screen.
I'm also finding that when nothing is downloading, the stability and responsiveness that was lacking is much improved. I can now pause a video and quickly move it to another point then continue playing. Previously that would cause a very long delay and the video would continue in a stuttering jerky manner for many seconds. I still cant skip in real-time though without it hanging for too long.
AMDXP3000 / 768mb DDR2700 / 7200RPM HD's I'm guessing that people with really cool systems wont have the same problems but at my spec, its still inferior to the performance I get in other players.
But its better! Definetly a worthwhile update. - eclipxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm running iTunes on a 3.06ghz P4 and a 850mhz Vaio laptop (256mb ram). Itunes opens in 2-3 seconds on the 3.06 and never experiences any slowdown, except when initially recognizing an iPod plugged in. Hardly ever crashes unless I'm working on a plugin and forget to dispose the COM interface.
On my vaio, it is quite a bit slower but still stable and once it's up and running it's just as fast as windows media player. Of course winamp is faster, but I use winamp stricly as a player.
Also - on Windows, you guys might want to look into MultiPlugin for iTunes. It might not be 6.0.2 compatabilit, but on earlier versions it let you skin iTunes, as well as pipe the audio through Foobar so that you could have it running through a surround sound system. I use this method and it works great. - crimson117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a fast athlon x2 system with 1gb of ram, and iTunes still takes quite a while to load up. (10+ seconds)
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+121 MB QuickTimeInstaller.exe, from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html, is QT v7.0.4 if you don't want iTunes.
- mesostinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Remember, if you still want to be able to utilize Hymn, don't upgrade past 4.5"
Hymn works up to 4.9.
Why anyone without an Ipod video would use anything past 4.9 is beyond me anyway.
itunes 5.x was pure garbage and 6.x has the ubber slow, bloated, and craptacular Quicktime 7. Man what a POS. I have to say even though i own like $750 worth of Ipod, from a windows standpoint Apple's programs tend be buggy as hell. Oh and my Ipod mini just stopped appearing in Itunes even though my Ipod Photo still shows up just fine. - FSFunky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"anyone have a download of 6.0.1 available? this new release sucks and I didn't keep a backup copy"
It's exactly the same as 6.0.1 only it has the MiniStore that you can turn off.
Oh, and going "OH NOES APPLE WILL KNOW WHAT I LISTEN TO THEY WILL KNOW I DOWNLOADED CRAPPY 96KPBS MP3S OF LINDSAY LOHAN'S LATEST ALBUM".
If Apple wanted to know what you listened to, they could've done it a long time ago. The ministore is basically just running a search using keywords taken from the song selected.
I will admit that the ministore is obtrusive but I figured out how to hide it within three seconds. And if someone can't figure it out within minutes (I'll cut you some slack) well, then you're a moron and should probably be best off with some Fisher Price. - birch25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I have over 300 GB of music in my music library, making tunes very unstable and painfully slow. I hope this upgrade helps!"
i have the same amount of music and itunes runs like a champ (click, instantly plays, smooth scrolling). you don't happen top be running the windows version do you? - youmustagree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This update now shows new release and other music that you can buy even when you are looking at your music library. Is this a good thing?
- notalbertpacino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you can now manually set "TV Show" tag for your own imported videos. About time!
- TheZorch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use iTunes on Windows (please don't hurt me!) and I love it.
When I can afford it I'm moving to a Mac Pro. - bagochris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We should DUBB this day apple day!
- reni10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How do you convert your .avi's to ipod compatible?
Seems to only want to convert .mp4 video!!! - Schroder3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's kind of funny that the "Steve Jobs" sketch is one of the SNL skits you can buy from iTunes.
- Mudcrutch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1gah i hate how it bundles quicktime --- why cant the thing just update without having to re-d/l the entire thing.
- shockingbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Crapiola said: iTune is terrible on Windows"
Agreed. Bloated. I just have a player that plays music. That's all I need. - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The mini store is pretty cool, cool update.
- thor17usa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just hope this version is more stable than the previous one. Then again it could just be that my machine needs a reload.
- tmcleroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0umm. i just checked the automatic updates thing in itunes and 6.0.2 isn't there
- fanboy00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0itunes 6.0.1 is very very laggy. Steve jobs better have fixed this!@#!$! GRRR @ JOBS.
- odysseus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have 6.01 on my 5-year-old P3 and it works fine. 10GB library. Loads in about the same time as Firefox (~8 seconds) Never crashes.
Actually looking forward to the ministore as it will make it easier to read reviews, see the top100 podcasts, and get new album art. - Broccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can turn the mini store off. On my imac i went to edit>hide mini store. So no its not even a problem.
- dbooster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Question: Where can I find an older version of itunes, such as 4.9? While this new version is faster that 6.0.1, it is still slower that 4.9 was. My 1ghz powerbook is getting a little older now, so I see no reason to always upgrade to the latest app version anymore.
- stickyboot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I cant play quicktime movies on webpages in Firefox 1.5 now. Is this just me?
- ThisGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If i listen to a song I like, say off of a compilation, i can open up the mini store and see a list of the artists albums. Helping me find music I like, without making me search for it.
This saves me at least five of my seconds, and when I don't want to do this, one click and it's away.
Stop moaning. - ThisGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Really stupid question coming up, but this is an international patch yes? I clicked "check for updates" and Itunes didnt find any, I installed anyway, after following the link above.
Now I can access all the US Videos that I couldn't before, and all the prices, accross the store, are in dollars.
Maybe I'm being paranoid, maybe I'm being an idiot, but was I supposed to use this patch? Have I just turned my UK iTunes into a US iTunes? - ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Image: http://home.comcast.net/~lm2002/images/itunesministore.jpg

Please let me know which portable media players are compatabile with the Windows Media rating system (when using MP3s, not WMAs) and can update playlists on the fly (on the media player).
On my iPod for example, I have a playlist of song's I've rated 4 or 5 and haven't listened to in the past 3 months. This gives me a good variety of music that I like but haven't heard in a while. As I listen to music in this playlist, it automatically updates itself by removing the tracks I listen to - all on the iPod. Since I use my iPod mainly in the car, I don't sync to iTunes very often so this functionality is perfect. Are there any other media players that support this? I'd honestly like to know becasue I wouldn't mind switching - I just haven't found anything that does the same thing. - vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iTunes always seems to use a lot of resources on my system when it's running in the background. Hopefully the new version will be better about that...
- thejam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I doubt this upgrade will help speed things up but here's hoping ...
- FiveIron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't bother to update from 6 to 6.0.1, why would I update to 6.0.2, I hate having to re-install it, plus, I haven't had any problems with 6, any bugs haven't affected me, it just seems like a waste
- matx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love winamp, havent updated it in a while though ;)
Dare not install Itunes onto my new box, i got mplayer classic to playe quicktimes :P - -=IRonGRundy=-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The new Multiple Speakers feature is seriously flawed as once its activated you cannot adjust the volume within iTunes. This is rediculous! I've got powered speaker hooked up to my Aiport Express and they blast out at max db no matter what I do?!
- RiddickRom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is no need to trash the thread. Theres some good conversation going on here. If you hate iTunes then why click the link in the first place? Nobody forces you to click on subjects you're not interested in.
I'm very glad this was put on Digg, I've got a much more stable iTunes as a result.
Oh and as for Apple users and iTunes. I'm jealous. I've seen QT and iTunes running on an OS X box and it really is silky smooth. Sorry for not mentioning I was using the PC version. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Other than the lag on a windows box, the only thing I have a problem with is the behavior of video. When I click the close button on the video window, the video should not continue to play in the album art box. There is no quick and easy way to terminate a video.
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0someone recommend to me a good mp3 software besides winamp and itunes for windows xp, please :)
winamp used to be my favorite but its getting worse and worse... - pointsman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@kin242
I would be interested in what (if any) additional/enhanced DRM comes with this upgrade - any ideas? - kingp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's funny. I see it available on iTunes website, but when I run the "check for new updates" option in iTunes 6.0.1, it says that it is the latest version...
- opus20745, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To everyone that keeps complaining about iTunes not finding an update:
Did you bother clicking on the LINK IN THIS STORY?
Come on people. No one said iTunes will tell you there's an update the absolute millisecond it's realeased on the website. If you really WANT to only download updates by iTunes telling you to, just wait a few days and I'm sure your prayers will be answered. Otherwise, just CLICK THE LINK. - Griffen37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, with 87 comments before me, I hope this gets read...
I just dutifully updated to take advantage of the improvements (airport and computer speakers functioning simultaneously, etc). And had heard about this "mini-store," but dismissed it b/c it could, "be disabled." I comment to WARN:
The ministore basically runs an ITMS search on the music selection you choose in your personal library. This means Apple can track what you listen to. It also means that it is likely sending back ID3 tags. So, has anyone vetted the privacy policy that comes with the new version? For those of you "sharing" music, those tagz could give you away? What's Apple's master plan? - dan.grover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The mini-store thing has got to be the single tackiest and most intrusive thing I've seen from Apple. It isn't at all immediately apparent how to hide it (finally figured it out). This isn't useful at all, just wastes screen real estate.
The thing though is that regular plain non-technie users who don't click buttons and change preferences won't realize you can hide it -- they'll just think that it's a tacky ad and that the iTunes Music Store *is* iTunes, that you *can't* put music on an iPod that isn't purchased from the iTMS (which is already a misconception among people, actually).
The rest of the stuff at the expo looked pretty sweet though. - topper24hours, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"gah i hate how it bundles quicktime "
google "itunes standalone" or quicktime standalone" - Doofy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Mini Store makes recommendations based on what song is playing in your library.
Pretty cool. (and easily turned off, so no reason to bitch) - macslut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a library that is just under 400GB . iTunes is fast enough on my G4, but lags in Windows. One thing that really helps is to not get carried away with too many playlists...especially smart ones. Likewise don't have any linked apps that are active if you don't need them to be (like Cluttetr and PearlLyrics).
The mini store is a nice addition. It's entirely optional and doesn't access the network when disabled (with a simple click) - timmyt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Sorry, iTunes is horribly written. It crashes and freezes up constantly, I have to open up my podcasts in Windows Media Player in order to hear them without distortion."
You must have a slow computer, or a computer that is incapabale of handling iTunes, because I can run iTunes just fine without any hiccups or crashes. - orbitalpunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
the MiniStore sucks ass. talk about force fed adverts. - zenchi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Single greatest iTunes 6.0.2 feature:
"AirTunes Enhancement New in iTunes 6.
Simultaneously stream the same song wirelessly to up to three home stereos or powered speakers — using AirPort Express with AirTunes." - Forgelier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can you play aacPlus stream on a Mac with this version ?
