- DeVryGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3About OPML files: Couldn't you just create a Applescript or Automator Workflow to parse the OPML file and add all the feeds? It's just an XML file afterall.
- drummer70714, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Love The new podcast tab.
- hardcoredj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wheels999-no, you do not have to have a valid ITMS account to use this feature.
- gunnmjk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Spoke too soon. But the podcast directory loads. ESPN radio podcast, KCRW Bookworn, Inside Mac Radio, Engadget, Disney Insider, ABCNews, KCRW's to the point, Catholic Insider, KCRW's le show... those are the top podcasts right now
- xtremdav45, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So us windows users have to wait till later today?
That sucks - Bandito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is it just me or does the Adam Curry image tag from his Daily Source Code make him look like a cross between Barry Manilow and Father Guido Sarducci?
Too funny. I remember back in the day when he was an MTV VJ (you know.. when MTV actually used to PLAY MUSIC). - jbauer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2https://swdlp.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/SoftwareDownloadApp.woa/wa/getProductData?localang=en_us&grp_code=itunes&returnURL=http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just downloaded it from Apple site, I have Windows XP and in about window it showed up as 4.9.0.17. Great stuff, can't wait to try out the new Podcast feature.
- hardcoredj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wierd. I updated to 4.9 according to software update, but iTunse doesn't reflect this. It's till listed as 4.8 and I see no obvious changes to it. This bears out further research.
- hardcoredj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1YIPPIE! Use Software Update for all the new joy.
- hardcoredj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Okay, so the problem was with the alias in the dock. Delete that and choose itunes from the Applications folder and all is fine. New preferences for podcasts and adding feeds are now available. This is some nice integration work.
- hardcoredj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TWiT, Violet Blue, Bricks in my Pocket, Governator's Podcast. 30 others en-route. :)
- hardcoredj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oops. that's searchable. Turns out there's a few of the more contovercial podcasts available, thought at the current time, only Dawn and Drew seem to be carrying the 'Explicit' tag.
- RickP_in_AZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1See, now someone had to go and mention Violet Blue! I wasn't going to point out that her feed was 4th to be added to my itunes. (TWIT, BinRev, MacCast, & VB's OSS.)
- hardcoredj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just add the feed manually this time. You can manage any feed you can add in. I'm testing this out since I doubt the podcast directory will include anything from Violet Blue. So far, so good.
- pixelpuncher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now we just have to wait for the launch of the podcast page. I hope I can manage my twit episodes easier this way.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm... the apple store is down. Wonder what product is coming.
- RickP_in_AZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't know, but the iTunes page obviously still shows "4.8" and in the new iTunes 4.9 when you click on the new Podcasts category and select "Podcast Directory" it takes me to the normal front page for the Music Store, no section for podcasts is apparent.
- hardcoredj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, it seems that they've added more 'explicit' content since I mentioned that.
- bentoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Distorted View Show is carrying the "Explicit" flag.
- mdweezer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Updated via software update without a hitch, loaded up with subscriptions, changed my settings to "download all episodes" and I'm off and running. Hopefully when I get home from work I'll have hours of content ready for me, too bad I work 9 hour days, this could be a long day...
- Jaggins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just got it and I'm listening to the alittlepoison.com music podcast, which I couldn't find on the search as it's too obscure. Will Apple allow you to submit new feeds to their store?
- Piggo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Guys you HAVE to check out the itunes new music podcast, even if your not interested, check it out just to see how it itergrates with itunes album art, with bookmarks and music store links in the album art. Its brilliant.
- wheels999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do you have to have a valid iTunes Music Store account to be able to setup and download podcasts? (for those of use who aren't yet blessed with a local music store presence)
- hardcoredj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1absolutely shocking that violet blue is a serchable podcast. Others weren't so lucky, but you'll have to find them on your own.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1gunmjk...look to the right... TWiT is up there. You can add a podcast manually under the "Advanced" menu. Not very intuitive.
Initial impressions...
The way they handled the display of feeds feels rather like a hack, than a true solution. They made the feed listing conform to the standard itunes layout, rather than listing them in a more stadard rss layout. You have to click the i button to see the description. Also, this won't replace your rss news aggregator, as no feeds will be listed that point to only text feeds or feeds that don't place their mp3s in proper enclosures. - DeVryGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@jwk3114: Seriously calm down. First off this wins over ipodder x in my book considering this is free, but that's just me. They JUST LAUNCHED it, where are they supposed to get statistics for what the top podcasts are besides what they decided to list. Not all the podcasts have even been added to the directory. Give it a couple weeks and then check out the top podcasts. I doubt Podcast Alley had great stats on its first day.
P.S. The Podcast Playlist seems pretty awesome. - test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got it this morning and wow this is great, the selection is pretty impressive. I am already a big fan of Apple and this is just another great step.
- ButchCivic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hell yeah! I just downloaded TWiT and Engadget! It worked great! But are these the official feeds(links put in by the makers of the podcast). Some of them have no picture or info?
- test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1see if we can make the TWIT one of the top dl
- Thranduil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a shame that the TWiT feed is only the 32kbps feed and not the 64kbps feed.
- iMiXiMi, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1Yaaaaa, only 2 years 300 days too late!!!:(
- jwk3114, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope you are right DeVry guy
- karit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just loaded twit. It only shows the latest 10 how can I make it show and download all the way from episode 0?
- DeVryGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Technically they dropped the regular iPods and renamed the iPod photo.
Kick ass though, 60GB for what I payed for my 20GB a couple years back. - eyepodder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just dloaded the upgrade. Installed fine. But you can't import .opml files from other podcasting software. Unless I missed it somewhere. I can see .txt, .xml and .m3u files from the import option under File.
I won't use this unless I can import my .opml file. To much work to copy and past all those cast I have in iPodder. - ddtape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1New iPod's have just been released. It looks like they ditched the iPod Photo and added color screens to all the current models (except the mini)
- RickP_in_AZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They can *start* charging... doesn't mean that we need to start paying for utter carp!
- SuperMoonMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are you kidding? There's no way to import OPML files? I have to manually enter 40 podcasts. That's crazy. Other than that, I really like this. It definitely simplifies the process so that anyone can do it.
I've noticed that the Top Podcasts list has slowly shifted from the "professional shows" to the ones that are actually good. - SilverSurfR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"How much do you want to bet a lot of people start charging for there Podcasts now."
How much you wanna bet people will stop listening when that happens. I doubt the guy that listen's to 40 podcasts will want to shell out money for all of 'em. - warcry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How much do you want to bet a lot of people start charging for there Podcasts now.
- DeVryGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just because the listing interface is in iTMS doesn't mean they are supporting the ability to charge. Apple is just providing a front end, the creator doesnt really have a choice to charge from what I saw this morning.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, Just to say sorry. I duped this story accidentaly
- DeVryGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Holy crap, you listen to 40 podcasts? I've only been able to find 4 that I really feel are worth listening to.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iTunes 4.9 won't break Winamp and mlipod. However the iPod firmware update will indeed break mlipod and every other non-iTunes iPod-capable program.
- gunnmjk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they're up!
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Note that the iPod update they released today will also break compatibility with any other iPod capable programs. Might want to hold off on updating your iPod unless you use iTunes 4.9 only.
- a_greer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0REAL podcasting is relegated to the "indy podcasts" bar at the bottom...SCREW YOU APPLE
- eyepodder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0After further testing 4.9 broke Winamp with the iPod plugin Support. Once you try to start winamp it crashes with the debug error. Send error to Microsoft popup. Back to 4.8 for me.
No support for Winamp
No support for Bit Torrent
No support for OPML
Did Apple even look into current pod-catchers to see what features people are using? - a_greer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0The podcast main page is 98% corprate shils...wtf...who needs a disney podcast when they own a lot of the radio, and a good chunk of OTA and ca/sattv?
So much for the little guy, well Adem Curry, this seems to be the day podcasting died. It was a great ride, whats next? -
