- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22try kisMAC instead http://kismac.de/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Kismac, MacStumbler, and iStumbler will all show networks that are not broadcasting their SSID (network name) which the Airport menu will not show. They also offer more specific information such as signal strength, signal quality, channel, etc. It's nice when your setting up your own network to be able to see what channel others in your area are using (most seem to be using channel 6 as that is the default of most routers) so you can select a less used channel to avoid possible conflicts. They can be very useful in diagnosing wireless network issues.

http://www.netstumbler.com/ - Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22they're called Mac Book Pro's now! Keep up with the times.
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I can't believe you never heard of this either!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I have used all three, iStumbler, MacStumbler, and KisMAC... I like KisMAC the best, but they are all three quality programs..
- mingistech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I've been using MacStumbler for years... works great. :)
http://www.macstumbler.com/
I'll have to check this one out too. - dalurka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Kismac has more functionality. It can do passive scans, crack wep and log accespoints coordinates if you have a gps.
Download it at
http://kismac.de/
Use the nightly builds for even more features and hardware support, they are usually stable. - MegaBabu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I Love iStumbler I have been using it for years but each version is getting better and better!
- esoteric0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4the only problem with kismac is that it doesn't support the macbook pro (or any intel machine) in passive listening mode. i have to pull out my original 17" powerbook to use it to its full capability.
- CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Try also CoconutWiFi, which uses a handy menu bar icon showing a green light for available unprotected networks, amber for protected ones, etc.
- AcidPhysx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3lolorz! we used netstumbler a few years back on US highways and found that many of the HID lighting on highway ramps had wireless. Security? Nope...
- ajchavar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3thanks, that was definitely more useful than the article description. +digg
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4nice blog link
http://www.istumbler.net/ - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Yep, I remember using it a couple years ago under OS X 10.2.8. ;)
- neofactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To get passive searching... buy an external USB wireless car... they usually come with a USB extention cable; Take this long antenna and throw it over your back seat out the window... and War-Drive away using your favorite utility. (Kismac for me)
Apple will NEVER provide the needed chipset for passive scanning. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Love Kismac but it doesn't work with the new wireless cards in the new Intel Macs in passive mode, only active mode. Can't wait for them to add support for that.
I like MacStumbler. iStumbler has been great for a number of years but the new releases don't seem to work as well from what I've seen. - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Umm, if you erased/reloaded OS X, I think it's a hardware problem, Kismac doesn't do anything beyond a slight modification to the driver...
- lvlolvlo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you want passive mode support i have some instructions on my website on how to get this working on Kismac....
http://www.lvlolvlo.net/2006/11/23/kismac-on-a-macbook/ - techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd like to see a program like this for Palm OS/PocketPC. Perhaps the DS? That way I could walk around town without my laptop in my hands.
- ajchavar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4i don't mean to sound thick, but what makes this program better than just using the pulldown menu for airport to find an open network? i've never used iStumbler or kismac, and am not in a situation right now where using either would show many anything other than my home network, so i don;t understand the importance of the programs.
- joelhardi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you want to use Kismac in passive mode but can't, this is a hardware problem -- and don't expect Apple to provide a passive scan chipset + drivers anytime soon.
Just pick up a USB or PC card 802.11 adapter with one of the good ol' chipsets like Prism II, and then you're ready to roll. - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Work is being done on the passive mode on the Atheros-based Intel Macs.
- moet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1haha had this problem a while back.
loaded Kismac and used passive support for my ibook, Kismac stopped working and I rebooted. Like you my wifi card was unable to be activated. The only way I was able to reactivate my broadcom wifi card was through kismac again.
Its strange but when Kismac dosnt turn off its passive support for the broadcom wifi cards it will permanently disable the card till kismac tells it to activate. Its got somthing to do with the experimental drivers they use - ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3yep, works great.
AND it allows you to connect while it's open - unlike the wid0z version. - Brutal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What dashboard widget is he talking about?
- CopyNinja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I never had a problem that bad with Kismac, but still wasnt able to get it to work properly. The other 2 are great however. By the way does anyone know how to recover files emptied from the trash in OS X?
- mobdragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Have been using this great free app. for a while now. Good to see it getting publicity.
- HugoMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I nearly killed my Powerbook aiport connection trying to use Kismac on 10.4.8.
i had to erase cache in order to regain functionnality.
Kismac was great but is now incompatible.
I will never use it again - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Palm OS: Netchaser http://www.bitsnbolts.com/
(there's 3 or 4, but Netchaser is my favourite)
PocketPC: Ministumbler http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/ - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://trac.kismac.de/ is where it's at...
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>Kismac, MacStumbler, and iStumbler will all show networks that are not broadcasting their SSID (network name) which the Airport menu will not show.
No, only KisMac will, and only in passive mode. Macstumbler and iStumbler run in active mode.
Oh, and as for displaying it, it appears as until someone probes for it (as in joins it, or scans for it by name), after which the SSID appears. Or you can fire a deauthentication packet out if your card supports injection, and get it instantly if anyone's on it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Check out FileSalvage from SubRosaSoft.com Best file recovery program for Mac (fastest and best recovery rate). Stop using your Mac right away though as OS X overwrites free space VERY quickly.
- egarc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If someone is on the network it can be almost instant but if the network isn't being used, it can take a while.
- badtz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does it show the SSIDs of those not broadcasting, instantly? Or after enough packets are collected?
- saketini99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1iStumbler is great at a desktop setup as well for checking out the clarity of the wifi channel you're using. If anyone else is on the channel you're using just jump to another one.
- smartsingh24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how is this different from the airport radar widget?
- Hatious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have been using iStumbler for over two years on my PowerBook G4 and the program works beautifully.
- webplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice program only problem is that it keep knocking my imac off my network. not sure but it could be messing up because of my wireless pre-n
- sugar1210, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a neat software; only, isn't it sketchy that it picks up networks that aren't broadcasting their wireless names? Doesn't this make it easier for people to "steal" a connection? like from their neighbor's wireless signal?
- sTuDlYgUy97, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this will deffinatly come in handy at airports and such
- linuxinsidev2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Read the comments above and you will see.
KisMAC is probably my favourite. i used to use kismet on my old thinkpad and loved it, i wish they had airport drivers for my macbook so i could use it on this, but it's all good.
I can install linux and use Kismet + MadWIFI anyway ;) - rabidsnail, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3No WEP cracking? I'll stick with KisMAC, thanks.
- Aqueous, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Kismac completely ruined the airport connectivity on my powerbook G4. I went looking for help on the topic but found nothing but hard to understand steps to fix the problem the app had caused. Upon contacting the project's IRC channel, i received no help what so ever. I even erased and reloaded OS X and it didn't help. I spent today driving to an apple store to have it fixed which it is now. Please be careful when using these types of apps.
- seithon, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8This looks handy.. But is their anything like it for windows?
- runpete, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@thbt, fixed it for ya :-)
http://duggmirror.com/apple/iStumbler_Search_WiFi_With_Ease/ - highoncontrast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Nice, thanks!
- Foxphoto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1open up your activity monitor or run Top and you will notice how poor the program was written.
- jamesthejust, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Don't miss KisMAC (http://kismac.de/about.php)!
- deedas, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I won't digg 'cause this is app is old as hell. But for the sake of the knobs out there I won't bury.
