- ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+62Putting a Core 2 Duo in the new MacBook Pro's is great, but it's the little things like this that really make me love Apple and their awesome attention to detail.
- Tilneys, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30Because it is I N N O V A T I O N
And something other manufacturers and software companies should pay something more than lip service to. - samanathon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15This article in not about function, but form - which is what Mac's excel at.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12This is yet another example of Apple's attention to detail that you'd never see from any other PC box assembler. As Apple states prominently on their MacBook Pro "design" page: No detail is too minor.
- leontes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I like how they really try to improve the usability of their computers with every iteration.
Slightly unrelated question: Which is the better 15" macbookpro for battery life?
I'm deciding in purchasing between the faster and slower macbookpro's: Does the faster one drain the battery noticibly faster, or is there better power management with the more expensive computer? If I know I'll be using the computer without access to a wall socket for longer periods: is it smarter to go with the slower computer? - koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15@ c3ative: If you don't like it, don't read it. In fact, bury it as "OK, this is lame," if you so wish. It's a large number of people that do care that have dugg this story and promoted it to the front page.
I wonder why there aren't as many Microsoft stories on the frontpage... hmm.. digg is about what people want, not what the media feeds them. Therefore people must want Apple. Right? Makes sense to me anyway. - evansls, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11pics from macbook pro section at apple.com:

It's a great idea...the light comes on if you have an email, chat, text message on your iPhone, etc.
http://www.macobserver.com/columns/devilsadvocate/2004/20030813.shtml - Aleks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Just STFU! If you do not like the mac articles, BLOCK IT! Just like how I block all Gaming / Mods news!!
- MavicA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The idea is that you cannot see the LED at all when it is off. On our Macbooks, you see these two little holes for LED and microphone. They're basically gone in this design.
Now the innovative about this is not that they have put a led under plastic like in iPod, iMac or iBook. No, the MBP casing is made of metal. Apple must have used transparent aluminum for this! :) - KyleMistry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The microphone, since the PowerBooks came along, resides next to the left speaker, which is also in the area of the ambient light sensor as well.
- REBELinBLUE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5My god, this has got to be the most moronic article ever posted in the Apple section.
Please don't tell me to hide the Apple section if I don't like it, I purchased a 2GHz Macbook 2 months ago and do find this section very useful for showing me things I don't know about.
Seriously, it is a green light shining through a bit of plastic, for christ sake electronics have been doing this for years. Are people really that excited about such a change?
It is no wonder people see Mac users as rabid fanboys when stuff like this is seen as such amazing news. Apple is the only company that could make a small (all be it, classy) change like this and have it as front page news on a site like digg. Yes we know Apple has a loyal fanbase, but seriously tone it down a little and people will stop seeing you (or us; I say "you" as I don't consider myself an Apple fan [nor a Microsoft, Dell, IBM or any other company fan]. The Mac is simply a device, it does some things well just as PCs do other things well) as rabid fanboys. Of course, I'm sure there are some who don't want to tone it down because they think they are superior to those who don't use Mac OS.
No doubt though that this'll be burried within minutes for having the audacity to say anything even remotely negative about Apple or Apple fans. - turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5they both have battery management and can scale down processor speed on the fly to save battery, so the faster one would save more batter so long as you don't use it's full power all the time. Or if you go into battery saver mode.
- sw0rdfish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You're obviously way to un-educated about Macs to make the argument you're trying to make. You fail to recognize that by purchasing a Mac, you get a built in software suite that is unmatched by many third party apps on windows, never mind being built into the OS.
And that's just the icing on the cake. You're endless babbling and bashing proves nothing except how blinded you are by your fanboyism... that or daddy won't buy you a Mac. - leontes, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9It increases usability through it's reassuring presence: you know know that it's activated without having to seek out the info on the screen. It reassures you that your computer isn't watching you when the light isn't on. It also allows one to sue the isight to record when you don't have the screen illuminated.
- KyleMistry, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"Oh, btw, I'm not an Apple hater."
Yes you are. Go back to making some half-assed Oblivion mod now. - kenthorvath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That sounds useful on something like a phone, but you have a large screen on a computer for stuff like that.
But it would be nice if my phone tracked my emails for me. - MavicA, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11I never need to restart my Macbook: it does so by itself, isn't that a cool feature!
- REBELinBLUE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, because that tiny little dot on the top of my screen is very distracting, it often stops me in my tracks whilst I'm working. Sadly this is because I have the attention span of a 5 year old with ADHD ;)
- geniusj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Do people not figure there's a reason that Apple has garnered such media and consumer attention? It's not some conspiracy or freak occurrence. It's because they've put out some interesting products. When Dell does that, maybe they can get front page treatment for every new product they release, or every minor change. The fact is what Apple did with the light is unique and they've earned their place in the spotlight by doing interesting things in the past. The small things like this really do go a long way.
- nathos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Scotty gave them the forumula for transparent aluminum!
- TwinSigma, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10@joel8x
The frustrating thing is that I don't want to completely eliminate every Apple story there is. I like a lot of things about Apple and the legitimate innovations they've made - and there are plenty. MY gripe here is, there is no other company in the world for whom their changing of the placement of an LED would merit a front page Digg story.
Also, I apologize pre-emptively for the structure of that last sentence. - Tilneys, on 10/12/2007, -10/+12Oh and another thing. Mac users have more time on their hands to read and post interesting articles...
No restarting
No reformatting
No defragging
No virus clearance
No renewing of security software
No-one else slowing up our Macs by sending out spam from them
No seeking out software from milliions of titles for something possibly above average
et al... - iAlex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I guess the slower one has a little bit better batterylife. But you should buy the faster one.
- REpler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Oh my gawd - so many fanboys got boners over this LED in this thread... lol
- suppazone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am so sick of tired of every Apple story being filled with comments about "why do we need all these Apple stories". Just go to your profile settings and uncheck Apple. It's that simple. Just as simple as ignoring everyone with lame comments.
- brentris, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3this integrated, invisible-until-on status LED won't cook your dinner or do your dry cleaning, it's just a very classy touch that makes their product more sleek and "transparent."
- mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ooooooh! I get it. I'm a dumbass. Thanks for the explanation. I'm "un-burying" the story now. :)
(also, nice Star Trek reference) - xtremesniper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kay wait so where is the microphone in those pics?
- soopafly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@imtigger2
Hahahaha..you crack me up. I bet you $100 that you haven't done a side by side comparison of a MacBook Pro to any similar laptop with the same specs. - xtremesniper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh okay thanks. I got confused because the Macbook microphone is next to the webcam.
- ez12a, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hm some people's comments on the actual article suggest that the bezel is made of aluminum. However, it is not. It is plastic. The outer shell is aluminum. It is not hard to make an LED shine through plastic. just cover the hole and you're done, given that the plastic might be a tad thinner in that specific spot.
my core 2 duo macbook pro is coming this week. - mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, the newer one has better batery life, the Core 2 Duo CPU is better at Power manigment, and it just doesent get as hot.
- liquidtodd, on 01/14/2008, -0/+0No it's not plastic. It's aluminum. They drilled (probably with a laser) tiny little holes in the aluminum bezel. The MacBook's are made of plastic. The Pro models are aluminum. You can see the holes if you look really closely with a magnifying glass. They are REALLY small.
- nicktripp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"I'll use my Mac, you can use your windows PC, it doesn't affect ME, what YOU use."
The problem, for me, is that it DOES affect me when other people pick Windows. People who aren't computer savvy simply can't get Windows secured well enough so that it doesn't affect the rest of us. I'm not talking about people who are here on digg. I'm talking about my mom, your grandma and that random lady down the street who knows you "work with computers somewhere". Then they want ME to clean up the viruses, the spyware and explain to them why their new computer is so slow.
It affects all of us when companies make crappy products and them push them the way Microsoft has. Until that changes, I'll stay on my soapbox and continue to use (and recommend to others) what works best based on my own experiences. - sw0rdfish, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Fanboys.... on both sides of the argument... You guys waste too much time trying to get other people to see your view on computing. Who cares? I'll use my Mac, you can use your windows PC, it doesn't affect ME, what YOU use.
As a Mac user, I still don't think this is "front page news", it's cool.. but come on! It's an indicator light! - rebotfc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Thats pretty cool , wonder how they do it?
- koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5@ zzzbest: How did you know? All Apple fans love Mocha. You see, we meet up everyday on the planet shaped like an apple somewhere in Andromeda and cook up plans to flood the Inter-web with evil Apple news to ultimately achieve our goal of making every bi-ped in the known world eating an apple a day. Btw, it doesn't keep the doctor away, we do it just for the kicks. It's fun taping an entire planet chomping on fruit. *chomps in glee*
- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7I see people mentioning improvements in usability, etc. How exactly does this improve usability?
- theprez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1You're just angry your Macbook doesn't have it.
- Universal, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1It's amazing how the comments get worse as you scroll down the page. Depending on your "sort by ___" preferences, of course.
- TwinSigma, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6@leontes
Were you reading that off an Apple brochure? The blurb is about Apple hiding the indicator light under the surface of the material. Apple has made the prescence of the LED LESS obvious. Now, you don't know that the indicator is there until you've seen it turned on... I don't think it's a big deal either way, but I think "reassuring prescence" is a mighty big stretch. - khyberkitsune, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@digggggggggggg
If you were a consultant - I'd fire you. An hour to fix something that takes maybe 20 minutes to just wipe and re-image?
My pal who works as an IT admin for an entire college's nation-wide network (Remington) knows to simply re-image the laptop if a student screws it up. Trying to repair the problem is just a security risk considering all the holes Windows has.
Off-topic: Love this captcha - Dr8am. Most doctors do indeed start work around 8am, at least PC doctors! - digggggggggg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1@ jim1977 - I work as a consultant for students' computers at a university (mostly Winows) and I have seen a lot of cases where Windows has gotten so bogged down with spyware, adware, and viruses that they have become nearly impossible to use, often taking a good hour to clean up on a good day.
Maybe I'm just annoyed that these problems take so much of my time to resolve, but it has become apparent that even with a good antivirus, firewall, and the latest patches applied, Windows is hopelessly vulnerable to malware. Even when it can be attributed to the incompetence of the user in following bad links and intentionally installing "free" software with strings attached, someone's got to clean it up in the end.
Doesn't it bother any of you that even as customers, buying their relatively expensive operating system, that Microsoft has made it our responsibility, or rather, our liability, to keep their OS secure? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5two points:
1 - my windows machine's maintenance is fully automated - everything from defragmentation to software updates and virus checking is done for me. this is not hard to set up.
2 - where, exactly, does os x differ from other *nix systems, besides a lot of people getting excited about os x and thinking it's something it's not.
2.5 - my windows machine usually needs restarting after its monthly update - just like my mac.
in short, only inexperienced users have problems with windows or make a big issue about os x. and don't get me wrong, os x is good, i'm just a little irked by non-technical people promoting it with exaggerated advantages. - TwinSigma, on 10/12/2007, -29/+24I'm not rabidly pro- or anti-Mac, but I feel like this news story single-handedly exemplifies the unnecessarily large amount of Apple news that makes it onto the front page. Putting an indicator light underneath the brushed aluminum? Whoooa boy, stop the presses.
- m00dy, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4shut up betty
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2@leontes
like it's impossible to activate a camera without its indicator? they'll both be separately controlled from within the driver.
still, it's a nice if not slightly over-engineered detail. - koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Oh and you got the last bit wrong, we're m a g g o t s - the nasty worms that infest rotten apples. No chance of us being *****, as we wholly doubt the possibility that creatures as minute and gross as us can .. ahem ... get it on (I'd say 'with either sex', but it turns out that word isn't even in our vocabulary! How nasty are we?!).
- cr3ative, on 10/12/2007, -22/+16Why is he getting dugg down? He makes a fair-reasoned and perfectly valid point.
