- sugardaddy4242, on 10/12/2007, -2/+94Finally, a review that cuts through all the B.S. and asks the tough questions.
- schlurp, on 10/12/2007, -12/+53This review sucks.
Who the hell compares mp3 players without taking their flotation properties in alcoholic beverages into account?
Buried as inaccurate - blanski, on 10/12/2007, -10/+32You, buried for using the word "meme".
- Odiwan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26I don't think you understand the word 'touche!'.
Didn't you see the "Hello, I'm a Mac" ads? ;) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19You're a touchebag.
- Patented, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20All you young whippersnappers with your newfangled fancy claptrap. In my day we had to stick 8-track players in our asses to feel smug about the latest technology.

- OprJZigworthy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20The iPod is based on ancient Japanese history. All the Zune has to do is hit its weak spots for massive damage....
- 1999ncsu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Best review ever!
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11What's funny is that people will probably still find something to complain about or say the article is inaccurate.
- themarq, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Man some of you guys need to learn to enjoy a little humour every now and then. Take the iPod Nano out of your ass for christ's sake. We're not trying to cure cancer here (or rickets for that matter).
- obrie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12What, no one gets the Daily Show reference?
- Virak, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I think you mean 'stupidly awesome'. I'm not sure that makes sense, but regardless, some of you people need to get a sense of humor.
- themarq, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15You mean Microsoft? That seems like a pretty successful name-brand to me.
- Ascendant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8a Daily Show reference that itself is a Simpsons reference... excellent

- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@mikeandike22, get off your knees it is embarrassing and bill doesn't seem too interest. this is another example of microsoft seeing a popular product area and wanting to get into the business - big deal they came out with a media player 7 years after everyone else in the world. is this to be applauded?
@acomj, iPods work just fine in Linux - Jack9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm not gonna bother clicking the link. You lose.
- monkeyman23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"You are arguing that the iPod will fail because of its ubiquity and that the Mac will also fail because it only has 5% of the market"
No. You did not understand or dont want to understand.
1- iPods are everywhere and this causes the coolness factor (which many people believe is one of the reasons for the success) is diminishing.
2- What I implied with the 5% market share is that no matter what they do, they wont break out of the 5%.
iPods are at their peak, apple cant keep making dumb "upgrades" because people wont buy them anymore. Now they need to focus on the people who currently own an iPod, and make them want to buy another one. Why? Because the majority of the people who have intentions or desires to buy an iPod, already have one.
Right now apple has a lot to loose (their entire business if people ditch the iPod). Microsoft, just petty cash.
Unless Apple makes a comeback soon with real innovative products, not playing catchup with player and features already on the market, they'll dig themeselves into a big hole that will be pretty hard hard to get out of, somewhat like their 5% software market share........ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If by "stupid" you mean "nearly as cool as a lapdance from a supermodel", then you are correct.
- DeezKnots, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Stupid.
- monkeyman23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"The price cuts were cool, but not cool enough to get me to buy a video player with a 2.5-inch screen. Or a 3-inch screen for that matter, since both the Zune and the iPod play at 320 x 240. But you knew that right?"
I dont believe Zune will be the best player when it comes out, but I think its a very good first step. My rant is against apple. The iPod right now should have more features like the FM tuner maybe if you dont like it. If they sell a separate FM tuner its because they know people want it. If not , they would not spend money designing it. Its just greed in apples part not to integrate it into the iPod by default..
Learn to read brother, I did not say iPod was cool, I said people buy it becuase its cool. Thats the message iPod ads have.
My point (that you have not refuted) is that Apple has to desperately do something to the iPod line. People were complaining about the small screen size in the 5g since the day it came out. How hard is it to make the screen bigger and use a clickwheel of the size of the nano? And fanboys are getting pretty excited with what could be the 6g or the separate video line and I believe they will be dissapointed...
Count on it: Be it touchscreen or whatever, the 6g iPod will leave out features offered by competitors.
You fanboys will be ok, but normal people will start to question wether to buy a new iPod or another brand. Competitors are improving their weaknesses, thats the difference. Apple just ignores its weaknesses and you fanboys just defend their every move. - Satanael, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7This just made my day...
Based on this article I will be purchasing a Zune. - AllnightChemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If recent history* has taught me anything it's this: Zune + Digg = FlameWar!!
Every Zune article is now a battleground.

I just hope my iRiver doesn't die soon, I love Rockbox and the FM Tuner that it came with. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Patented that reply is gold. Those 8track contraptions must have been uncomfortable as hell.

- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, lets take this a few points at a time.
"Obviously the immature apple fanboys will laugh at ZUne is prohibited in their cult to even think something better than the iPod may enter the market."
Grammar and sentence structure aside, I would welcome another player compatible with the Mac. The Zune is not.
"Reality is Apple are placing themeselves in a position to let microsoft or another company steal market share. The reason: NO INNOVATION. What is the best Apple has done in the last 12 months? 1- Gapless playback 2- Games; they have been on cell phones for years. Nothing Exciting. 3- brighter screen. WOW. And they call themeselves innovative. About the nanos, bigger capacity and a material that does not scratch. This nothing new, since we all know apple make this ipod that scratch so that people spend $$ on cases and thus they make more $$$."
Here I would agree with some of this. I was disappointed with the new iPod line-up and don't see it as all that different from what they had before. The price cuts were cool, but not cool enough to get me to buy a video player with a 2.5-inch screen. Or a 3-inch screen for that matter, since both the Zune and the iPod play at 320 x 240. But you knew that right?
"Apple really put theme selves behind by not coming up with something better with the 12 months they had. Not even a simple integrated FM tuner!! They dont innovate anymore because they think they dont need to, because the have enough fanboys. They will have a nice surprise. They forget that if it wasnt for the iPod, the company would bankrupted already. And knowing this, they are overconfident."
Apple is in no danger of being bankrupt. Nor were they prior to the iPod. Even the oh so vaunted 150 mil that so many blather on about that MS paid Apple is pocket change. Consider that at the time, Apple had no debt and over 6 billion in cash on hand. What good was 150 million going to do? The big news out of that announcement was that MS agreed as part of settling all the lawsuits would continue developing Office for the Mac. That was more important that MS buying 150 million of non-voting stock (which they later sold at a profit). FM Tuner? Why do you think I bought a DAP in the first place? To get away from the mindless corporate tripe of FM. You're more than welcome to it.
"Everything right know is set for the demise for the apple:
1- Better players from other company's. You say these other players failed and your right, they failed because they didn't have the content. But know they do. Amazon raped Apple with the movie announcement."
Hmmm, better player? Sales and market-share doesn't quite follow that through. I know how much you guys LOVE to quote Market-share. Amazon raped Apple with what? Unbox? Riiiight, check the sales figures. How much did Amazon sell with alllll those studios allowing them their catalogues as compared to just Apple with Disney's kiddie stuff.
"2- Apple fanboys HOPE too much, it part of the believes of the cult, the same way Jobs believes and hopes he will overpower Microsoft one day. The only thing I have to say is 5%, even with the iPod triggered conversions and the new Intel macs."
Wow! 5% now? Seems like just last year it was 3%. Markets aren't won or lost in a day. Will Apple one day be the dominant platform? Unlikely, but they could see 10% or maybe a little more. It's not that important to me as long as they keep making better Macs.
"3- The coolness factor diminishes everyday since I've seen even homeless (I'm not joking, I saw a homeless with a nano) people with one. People will find a new thing and adopt it to be cool because nobody else will have it."
You buy a device for playing music based on how cool it is? That's really sad.
The only thing about the Zune that could be considered remotely cool and innovative would be the wireless features and they screwed that up with even worse DRM than Apple could manage. Imagine that, all my OWN content that I ripped from my CDs now have MS DRM. At no extra charge! THAT's innovation!
Lastly, learn the difference between know and now. You will look slightly less foolish next time. - ismoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's an old saying that goes: "Why fix something that works?"
I think it goes a long way in explaining why the iPod has changed so little. - mikev, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4
Mine is a 5G, not a nano... - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it's only a smack down on the Windows platforms - pretty sure the Apple and Linux crowd could give a ***** if the iZune could be used for a TV remote
- maczombie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You're ***** gay for posting this. Kill yourself.
- themarq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I heard about it at 239. Fully 10 minutes before you did. Therefore I am more 733T...or something
- KMartSheriff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't understand why the people that hated this article are bitching? I'd assume they wanted the iPod to win, and it did!
This article rocked my face off. - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Why does the floatation of the device matter?!

- acomj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I will respectfully disagree.
With the Xbox MS decided Sony was making a lot of cash and wanted in on that market. The market itself was profitable, however MS has turned it into a battle of who can give away the most hardware (and has lost billions doing so).
The market for music barely makes the companies distributing it digitally any money at all (I think most of them loose money at it). Why would MS want to get into this market? Its not like there are large profits to be had, especially if your not profiting from the player. We'll never know for sure, but I'm betting its to keep folks buying the MS "cash cow" Windows(tm). Fast forward 5 years.. You've spent 350$ on zune music, now you have to choose the OS on your new machine, Mac, Linux or MS. I'm thinking you like the MS option as its the only one supporting your zune tunes. Its more important as the internet has made which OS your running less relevant.
If you had an ipod you could switch from mac to pc any time and take your music with you. If you switch to linux, your out of luck, untill itunes for linux due... 2010? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Anybody who fails to see the humor in this digg is a moron. Or a mac zealot. :P
- monkeyman23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1 Obviously the immature apple fanboys will laugh at ZUne is prohibited in their cult to even think something better than the iPod may enter the market.
Reality is Apple are placing themeselves in a position to let microsoft or another company steal market share. The reason: NO INNOVATION. Look at all the features other players have and features Zune have. What is the best Apple has done in the last 12 months? 1- Gapless playback (which may have been done back in the 3rd Generation if Apple LISTENED to consumers and not their egos) 2- Games; they have been on cell phones for years. Nothing Exciting. 3- brighter screen. WOW. And they call themeselves innovative. About the nanos, bigger capacity and a material that does not scratch. This nothing new, since we all know apple make this ipod that scratch so that people spend $$ on cases and thus they make more $$$.

Anything Apple does from now on will be to catch up, not innovate... The window to innovate once again passed for the last time on September 12. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15% SOFTWARE market share? Software. You realize that Apple is primarily a hardware company? Sorry, I shouldn't make fun. I forgot that English was not your primary language.
