Nah, it works out that the remote itself is actually only $10 itself but with how the usual Apple math works out, that snazzy "now you're hip" Apple logo is an extra $40 and you know there's no such thing as too much money to be cool :O - Scape3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Whoa....this sucks.
from review tgraham posted above:
"The biggest flaw we found? Apple seemed to have hard coded the the scan feature to increase in increments of .2 - e.g. 90.1 to 90.3 would be one such step. So... what about stations on even numbers? You just can't get them! You have to go to the .1 below or above, and hope the signal is quite strong. We can't believe Apple could be so stupid, so we're going to keep on checking this..." - Xipher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1war2d2:
Apple actually innovates with their media players, then Creative rips them off a couple weeks later. Feel free to use whatever you want, you have a choice, but you are definitely a minority saying that Creatives' interface is better than Apples'. - BushCheney08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Scape3d: There are no stations that broadcast on the even decimal frequencies. Here's the FCCs explanation why.
http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/bickel/oddno.html - pearlberry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Is it the attention to detail Apple has for their remote or the attention to detail people pay to something as simple as an Apple remote?
- JayPiddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am still waiting for the cassette tape adapter.
- Pest0003, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember when I bought my first iPod it came with a charger, a case, and a remote... then 2 years later I buy a Video iPod and I get no charger (they expect me to charge it from my computer... but that's a problem when I go one trips), a case that looks like it was made in a sweat camp, and no remote! No they are trying to sell me a remote for an outrageous price?!
They are just reselling things that should already be included when you buy an iPod! These things were standard when iPods first came out... We shouldn't be excited about this, we should be upset that Apple is screwing us over like this! - Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I love how it says "Designed by Apple in California" on the back, even though you know it was made in China for sixty cents.
- tgraham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Review and picks here : http://www.neowin.net/index.php?act=view&id=32064
- uthguy9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i would buy this if it had a built in FM TRANSMITER
- bashfulczar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is dumb, FM radio days are numbered. They should of came out with a add-on that plays XM/Sirius.
- PrplHaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is great, unless you have a 60GB Ipod video and decided to apply the 1.1 firmware upgrade. It's common knowledge by now that if you update the FW you get unacceptable problems with video playback, even using files that worked with FW v1.0.
So, unless you want radio INSTEAD of video...then I'd wait for FW 1.2 to see if they fix the problem. - iDiggAlot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the Old One, but at least they have one now for the current gen. I will stick with my second gen iPod.
- phntm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ye, why is it called radio remote when it has a wire?
- adkinsjm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Headphones are included because the cord of the included headphones are shorter that the ones shipped with the iPod.
- Ack99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is just useless. Who needs a remote for your iPod? Who needs radio for your iPod?
Dugg it just hoping it gets to Diggnation to see what those guys think about it. - audikyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree Ack99 -
Its white, and not wireless as well. Pointless. - gookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha. that's like a chopped ipod shuffle.
- hypermint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no screen on the remote, no point for the remote.
- celticrogue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's really just the fm tuner that's new, the ipod has had a remote for quite a while now....
- neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this attention to detail that Apple has for something as simple as a remote is utterly sickening...
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I love how it says "Designed by Apple in California" on the back, even though you know it was made in China for sixty cents."
lol, aint that the truth. Also true for most gear these days unfortunately. It's generally better to see that than designed AND made in China though. They have a ban on conscious thought and reasoning over there apparently. - kentborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is this really an FM radio, or is it a remote, antenna, and dongle for activating an FM-radio already in the Ipod?
-kb - Scape3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bushcheney08, thanks for the info. That relieves my worry about that.
You know, I don't know how reliable that review is anyway. See the below from the review:
"The other minor annoyance for us was that there didn't appear to be a system for saving pre-sets; whilst it remembers the frequency that you left it on, you couldn't save a list of five stations you listen to, saving the hassle of tuning each time."
This isn't true. At least from what I've heard other people state. From what I understand there are 5 presets you can set. - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why do you need a remote for the ipod? its the size of a remote already!
- Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I ordered mine that night from Apple's website and they're giving me a delivery date of Feb 8th. =(
- fastfood15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i swaer to god i saw a guy in Vail Colorado skiing thad had one of those on!!!!!!!!! Maybe he was an Apple Employee? Weird becasue i didnt recognize what it was even though it had an apple logo on it. So i was thinking wtf is that and i was going to ask but i didnt want to bother him
- freonchill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does this mean that you can use this w/ the ipod and perhaps the next ipod will just be a nice big widescreen rather than 1/2 of the rectangular real_estate set aside for the controls ?
- Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"And don't bring up the old "but the iPod interface is soooo nice" argument, because (again, IMHO) the Zen line's interface is >= anything coming out of Cupertino. "
Well it's a pretty strong argument. The wheel rocks and the click rolls. I had a Zen USB 2.0. but I recently switched to a Nano. Apples menu is just a little bit slicker and better laid out. Also the creative software was buggy as hell and I had to use 2 or 3 products to do what I do in iTunes. Not too bad for us digg users but try and see if your parents can pull it off. - SweetsGreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$50.... :(
- jaknet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bushcheney08.... Have you not noticed that the USA is NOT the whole world..... and in the UK for example there are stations on all frequencys odd and even..
And guess what the ipod is not limited to the USA either - supernova9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think the remote needs a screen, as the screen on the iPod itself is used to monitor the station selection. However, this is not worth $50. I have a Gen 3 and a Gen 5, and the lack of included accessories in the Gen 5 is appalling. No digg.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is the point of a wired remote?
Also, who the hell wants to listen to the radio anyway? I thought the whole point in having MP3s, etc. was to listen to what you want when YOU want to. Not when some fat ugly annoying DJ plays the tune on the corporate sponsored playlist.
Useless. - rocknrico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For another $20+ bucks...you get a MP3 + FM + Voice recorder
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16855125007 - donkeybeach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bought mine mainly for the purpose of getting the extension and the controller so I can have it in my bag and leave it there. The radio is a nice addition, and it really begs one to ask why they did not have this sooner. I remember with my 3rd gen iPod, we got this extension/remote for free. Now they add an fm chip and it jumps to $50. The profit margin on this thing must be sickening. The radio interface is not that great as well, you cant have presets or anything. And recording with auto naming so it uses the broadcast electronic info should have been included. Im guessing they;ll start selling bose (whatever) brand stereos that add the radio feature. What I personally would really like is AM tuning.
Although on the plus side reading the song title and info is incredibly nice... great feature.
So I love Apple, but this one grinds my gears. - PseudoCyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Is this really an FM radio, or is it a remote, antenna, and dongle for activating an FM-radio already in the Ipod?
-kb"
It is not a stand-alone FM radio, if that's what you're asking. The FM radio software was added in the latest update for the nano and Gen 5 iPods and this merely acts as the antenna. I imagine we'll find lower-cost 3rd-party alternatives as the year goes on. - jhuang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn, could anyone tell me how long will i have to wait until they have it with black color in stock, well, if they have the plan to make one! I want it to match my black ipod!
- Drifton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What?
This is lame, whats the point? Good digg, but I fail to see why anyone would buy it. - freonchill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does this mean that you can use this w/ the ipod and perhaps the next ipod will just be a nice big widescreen!!!
- mesostinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This make me even MORE annoyed that the 4G ipods don't work with this. WTF apple? My 60GB Ipod Photo isn't good enough for you anymore? I assume so based on how long they left smart playlists broke on my 4G.
No excuses for that or this product only working with 5G. This is just a simple lack of respect for your customers. Which I guess Apple is kind of famous for but still doesn't sit right with me. - mrblack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The FM thing might be a bit old for the UK considering everybody is buying the DAB digital radios. Having one of those in the ipod would be cool.
- p3lEr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does it comes in black ?
- stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Apple actually innovates with their media players, then Creative rips them off a couple weeks later."
Apple stole Creative's menu system. Apple stole the idea of a portable music player from Rio, a former partner. Apple makes things LOOK nice. They rarely innovate actual technology. They license or steal, like everyone else. - AdamWillis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is funny, I went to the apple store today and I was looking for a remote to replace the old ones, and I saw it and had no idea that it just came out today. I assumed its been out since nano or something.
- nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0H340. Rockbox. Iriver Firmware. So many features. Cheap replaceable (rechagable) 1300mA / 2100mA battery.
- BushCheney08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jaknet: Are they shipping these tuner/remotes in the UK at the moment? If they are, I bet the versions they sell there comply with local regulations. It's a thing called localization. Look it up.
- juanbobo808, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0uuuuuuuuuuseless. Why would someone ever want this thing? I want something wireLESS. Not wired.
- Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why do they include yet another pair of those uncomfortable ear buds? They must need to run out the supply so they can switch to the Nano style.
Also, Apple is increasingly pissing me off for surprise releasing products. I waiting through Gen 1, 2, and 3, and finally broke down and bought a 4 a *week* before they dropped the Gen 5. And now, the accessories don't even work with the Gen 4. It's outdated, you know, being almost a couple of months old.
If I ever decide to buy an Intel Mac (probably not, but if) I will expect a major announcement a week later - "Were switching everything to Sparc!" Maybe that is what they meant with the Switch campaigne, switch out your hardware every three weeks. (bitter.) - ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unfortunately, this doesn't work with one of the most popular Nano cases out, the Belkin (or Case Logic) Flip Case, because it has the dock port covered when it's closed.
- Sumyunguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow that's funny, I have had one of those for about 6 months, and mine doesn't have wires!
