iPod once again to be Top Selling 'Most Wanted' Holiday Gadget
appleinsider.com — 8% of those polled expected to buy one of Apple iPod digital music players this holiday shopping season, with only 3% planning to buy a Nitendo Wii or Sony PlayStation 3, while just 2% have their sights set on Microsoft's Xbox 360. The findings suggest that for a second straight year, the iPod will be the top selling "must have" holiday gadget

- damonlab, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I have never had an mp3 player before. My cousin had a 5GB samsung mp3 player that she did not know if it worked or not because she had no cables for it. She handed it over to me last month and asked that I could get her the cables for it. Not only did I get the cables, I also got headphones and speakers. All a part of her Christmas present.
Anyhow, I have been using the thing in the mean time and finially realized how handy one of these things are. I told a few family members that I want a 5GB mp3 player for Christmas myself. I told them specifically that I did not want an iPod as that costs too much and I did not care for brand names. I asked for the cheapest (non iPod) mp3 player they can find and said that I do not care if it is used as long as it works.
I do not understand why people pay a premium for a name brand when many other brands can play the same mp3s just the same. - bmobile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2damonlab: because the iPod is insanely easy to use and iTunes is a great music management software...imho
- shoez, on 10/12/2007, -4/+123r17i05o42n: "Zune: LEAST wanted holiday gadget."
Where did you read that? Was there some secret page of the article just for Apple fanboys? If you and your ilk would just stick with established fact, and refrain from using any news story as an excuse to make fun of a product that you have some bizzare hatred for(I blame the inferiority complex), maybe people would take you seriously. - xoineg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@damonlab same reason people buy Expensive cars and designer clothes. Looks, Looks and Looks. Ipod = chic.....Zune = Geek :P
- MrPlate, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25No, a gadget with a clicking circle beats out gadgets without clicking circles. Apple has the clicking circle market cornered. Er.. curved. Or something.
- mrFREEZE, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Don't try to play down the significance of this "clicking circle" design. Every company out there has tried to imitate it, but no one has succesfully duplicated it (although Creative has some close).

iPods are for girls - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20You'll only be able to find a Zune in stores if you don't need an employee to tell you *where they are*.
"Zune?" - zeiben, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18I got a Zune, and had the urge to take a Wii on it. I resisted the urge and got a refund instead.
- RPharazon, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8Rekzai - And Zunes are for brain-dead morons who want to back a hilarious failure of an MP3 player.

And astronauts and presidents. - broomett, on 10/12/2007, -18/+2RPharazon, the zune is a failure? What does that make OS X?
Pretty much the SAME market share. And after only a month. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -7/+81. How about some proof that the Zune has the equivalent market share of OS X.
2. Apple makes tons of money selling Macs. I bet Microsoft is losing money on Zunes at the moment. - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7"RPharazon, the zune is a failure? What does that make OS X?

You cant make that comparison.
Why? Because it would force the fankids to be consistent. They are not about to do that. - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5"Rekzai - And Zunes are for brain-dead morons who want to back a hilarious failure of an MP3 player."
Failure? It's nice to see that the fankids are still "kicking" around the old talking points as if repeating them will make it true.
So hows that "hilarious failure" of an OS from Apple working for you these days? - GregR, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6@flag564 "So hows that "hilarious failure" of an OS from Apple working for you these days?"
Apparently a lot better than your fav OS judging by the number of people moving to it.
Of course, if you weren't so anti Apple and actually gave it a try you'd already know that.
Maybe you did and that's why you're so PO'd. - Judge373, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Ugh. Criticizing OS X because of market share lower than Windows is like criticizing BMW for having lower market share than GM.
- MakinBacon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5broomett & flag564:
Considering that iPod sales just for 2006 were about 39 million and Apple has sold over 70 million iPods since their introduction ( http://biz.yahoo.com/rb/061206/microsoft_zune.html?.v=1 ) and will likely reach 100 million by June of 2007... and microsoft said that they hope to sell 1 million Zunes by June of 2007 ( http://news.com.com/Microsoft+Zune+sales+to+top+1+million+by+June/2100-1041_3-6141431.html ) ...
That is only 1% of iPods sales (which are themselves about 70% of total mp3 player sales. Just how exactly does that equate to a market share that rivals OSX?
Stop your lies please... or please reply to this with proof of your own.
crickets as Flag moves to another Apple post to troll.
thought so...
- Kinser, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6I'm calling ***** on these numbers. Although, Wii's are hard to find, Ps3's are hard to find and are trash, xbox 360's have been out for a while.. There's more demand for mp3 players...
But lets face it, the real reason the ipod is on top, is because there is a greater number of people who are technology illiterate than there are people who realize there are other brands of mp3 players.- itsme92, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, the real reason the iPod is on top is because there are a greater number of people who want to plug their mp3 player into their computer and have it work right the first time than there are people who don't mind spending several hours on Christmas day trying to get their zune/creative/sandisk player to work
- smartass007, on 10/12/2007, -17/+9wow, that click-army of poor people in india that apple hires are really working overtime today on digg! keep those lame apple stories (and fake comments) coming!
digg me down, bitches! :)- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -12/+8Actually I wouldn't be terribly surprised if companies like Apple and Nintendo used that tactic. At some point these companies that rely only on marketing instead of actually making a decent product have to find new schemes and "social news" sites are the perfect way to hock their ***** products.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Apple and Nintendo don't need to employ tactics like that. They have plenty of actual warm-blooded fans out there willing to do it for free. Sony and Microsoft are the ones that have built up enough bad blood with their customers to actually warrant those kinds of tactics.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4"Apple and Nintendo don't need to employ tactics like that. They have plenty of actual warm-blooded fans out there willing to do it for free. And you offer proof of this in what form?
Oh yeah, you dont like MS or Sony so they are evil. You like Nintendo and Apple so they are good as a God can make them.
- hitemup054, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3ipods are for morons...
i hate apple because they make everything so "user-friendly" to accommodate to idiots who can't use a computer and it ends up being more difficult to use for the rest of us....if i needed to have a portable device to play video clips, I would buy a zune....and if i didn't want to spend $250 on a wii instead :)- 23r17i05o42n, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Proving yourself to be a Wii-tard.
- Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"idiots who can't use a computer"
I'm certified in Logic Pro 7 & Final Cut Pro HD. It feels strange being called an "idiot".
I guess all of those Grammy, Cleo & Oscar winners are "idiots" too. - blargsoup, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Vermifax is a certified idiot. Good luck on that Cleo you've always wanted.
- bdbr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7If no more than 8% wanted any specific thing, maybe the proper conclusion would be that there is no "must have" item.
- Anth741, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I know this question is going to get buried down... but I think its somewhat relevant. I'm considering putting the iPod on my Christmas list... but I don't want apple to pull what they did when I bought my iPod photo and release the new video as soon as I buy the old model. Can I get the recommendation of the digg community? Wait or just give in?
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I believe there will be a 6G iPod within the next 12 months. Is that specific enough? :)
- almalax19, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I would wait 6 months If you care about the huge screen that the 6G is gonna have.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"gonna have."
Rumored to have. Believe me, I want one with a big screen as much as anyone but there is no confirmation that the next iPod will have a larger screen. - Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't buy anything until Jan. 07, 2007.
- tnwake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"but there is no confirmation that the next iPod will have a larger screen."
You mean the larger screen that the Zune already has? - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iPods sell pretty well on eBay - get what you want now, and sell the old one on eBay when or if Apple releases something compelling.
- Karmavs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@tnwake
No, we mean the larger screen that actually has a larger (in pixels) display and thus has a real practical advantage - like, 640x480 for instance
(personally, I'd rather a nano sized 320x240 screen (current nanos have a 160x120 screen, making them useless for video) than a Zune sized one (or an iPod sized one either))
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4A testament to how unimaginative people are nowadays.
- Escamillo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The iPod Shuffle, the most purchased iPod, is only $75, and people see it as a cheap tech gift. Comparing that with PS3, Xbox 360, et al, is stupid beyond belief, as video game systems are in a completely different market, pricewise.
- bgbs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0and those who purchase shuffle purchase it to listen to music only. Zune is purchased to watch movies, so I see no competition between shuffle and zune. Competition begans with Ipods with screens, and that is where you have to look at statistics of whether more ipods sell or zunes sell.
- DucksofAnaheim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So...a bottom rung ipod is like $99 vs $600 for a console. They sell more Toyotas than Ferraris also :)
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ROFL
Let's see... a large capacity video iPod for $249 or a PS3 for $699+... tough decision there.
Don't forget an iPod is so mainstream now even non-techies have them and are comfortable buying them. The same can't be said for the PS3 and so on.- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1PS3's are only $500, so say around $600 with accessories - and are Blu-Ray players as well.
I already have an iPod so I'd prefer a PS3 if I were getting anything.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1PS3's are only $500, so say around $600 with accessories - and are Blu-Ray players as well.
- Deku, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I will never buy an Ipod, or any version of it. There are MUCH better products that do the same and more with better screen resolution for the same price (Creative Zen)
This news prooves people don't do their homework before making an expensive purchase.- bmobile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Deku: While your comment of "there are MUCH better products that do the same and more...etc" might or might not be true, you have to look at an iPod purchase as "i am joining an ecosystem" and not just the particular physical product you are buying.
Take the iTunes Music Store for example...best digital entertainment store on the planet.
Take the INSANE amount of accessories made to fit the iPod (they even have an iDog that dances to your music).
Take the fact that iTunes is a really mature, well-rounded music management product and you have a very compelling reason to sacrifice a few features to reap all those benefits. The iPod-iverse is massive and continually growing...why NOT be a part of it? - creamyhorror, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I myself have only used Creative Zens so far and find them rather good, especially for the incredible battery life. Never got an iPod because it was always going for a premium that I never thought it justified. Only after I came to America did I find out that hardly anyone's even heard of MP3 players besides the iPod, which is unfortunate since increased competition will only benefit us consumers more.
- bmobile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Deku: While your comment of "there are MUCH better products that do the same and more...etc" might or might not be true, you have to look at an iPod purchase as "i am joining an ecosystem" and not just the particular physical product you are buying.
- bgbs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0whocares if its the most wanted. Its not like ipod can share music, its getting old.
There are like 5 different ipods, vs. one type of zune. You have to look at statistics of a movie ipod vs. zune, not all ipods vs. zune. Because if someone is buying an ipod shuffle, he is buying it for the sake of music only. Zune, is mostly made for movies.- shoez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Zune is not mostly made for movies. (I think that) Most people are more likely to listen to music on the go than watch movies. I know that the majority of the time I use my Zune, it's for music. I have 25 tv shows and movies on it, but I can't watch them unless I don't want or need to do anything else. When I am in class or trying to pay attention to the ground beneath my feet, I don't have the time to watch a movie. When I drive around, I'm sure as hell not watching movies. When I am taking the bus or someone I don't want to talk to is driving me around, I will watch movies.
