iPod once again to be Top Selling 'Most Wanted' Holiday Gadget

appleinsider.com — 8% of those polled expected to buy one of Apple iPod digital music players this holiday shopping season, with only 3% planning to buy a Nitendo Wii or Sony PlayStation 3, while just 2% have their sights set on Microsoft's Xbox 360. The findings suggest that for a second straight year, the iPod will be the top selling "must have" holiday gadget

    • damonlab, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I have never had an mp3 player before. My cousin had a 5GB samsung mp3 player that she did not know if it worked or not because she had no cables for it. She handed it over to me last month and asked that I could get her the cables for it. Not only did I get the cables, I also got headphones and speakers. All a part of her Christmas present.

      Anyhow, I have been using the thing in the mean time and finially realized how handy one of these things are. I told a few family members that I want a 5GB mp3 player for Christmas myself. I told them specifically that I did not want an iPod as that costs too much and I did not care for brand names. I asked for the cheapest (non iPod) mp3 player they can find and said that I do not care if it is used as long as it works.

      I do not understand why people pay a premium for a name brand when many other brands can play the same mp3s just the same.

      Where did you read that? Was there some secret page of the article just for Apple fanboys? If you and your ilk would just stick with established fact, and refrain from using any news story as an excuse to make fun of a product that you have some bizzare hatred for(I blame the inferiority complex), maybe people would take you seriously.

      That is only 1% of iPods sales (which are themselves about 70% of total mp3 player sales. Just how exactly does that equate to a market share that rivals OSX?

  • Kinser, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6I'm calling ***** on these numbers. Although, Wii's are hard to find, Ps3's are hard to find and are trash, xbox 360's have been out for a while.. There's more demand for mp3 players...

    But lets face it, the real reason the ipod is on top, is because there is a greater number of people who are technology illiterate than there are people who realize there are other brands of mp3 players.

At some point these companies that rely only on marketing instead of actually making a decent product have to find new schemes and "social news" sites are the perfect way to hock their ***** products.

    i hate apple because they make everything so "user-friendly" to accommodate to idiots who can't use a computer and it ends up being more difficult to use for the rest of us....if i needed to have a portable device to play video clips, I would buy a zune....and if i didn't want to spend $250 on a wii instead :)

      (personally, I'd rather a nano sized 320x240 screen (current nanos have a 160x120 screen, making them useless for video) than a Zune sized one (or an iPod sized one either))

Competition begans with Ipods with screens, and that is where you have to look at statistics of whether more ipods sell or zunes sell.

    Let's see... a large capacity video iPod for $249 or a PS3 for $699+... tough decision there.

    Don't forget an iPod is so mainstream now even non-techies have them and are comfortable buying them. The same can't be said for the PS3 and so on.

      I already have an iPod so I'd prefer a PS3 if I were getting anything.

      Take the iTunes Music Store for example...best digital entertainment store on the planet.

      Take the INSANE amount of accessories made to fit the iPod (they even have an iDog that dances to your music).

      Take the fact that iTunes is a really mature, well-rounded music management product and you have a very compelling reason to sacrifice a few features to reap all those benefits. The iPod-iverse is massive and continually growing...why NOT be a part of it?

Never got an iPod because it was always going for a premium that I never thought it justified. Only after I came to America did I find out that hardly anyone's even heard of MP3 players besides the iPod, which is unfortunate since increased competition will only benefit us consumers more.

    There are like 5 different ipods, vs. one type of zune. You have to look at statistics of a movie ipod vs. zune, not all ipods vs. zune. Because if someone is buying an ipod shuffle, he is buying it for the sake of music only. Zune, is mostly made for movies.

I know that the majority of the time I use my Zune, it's for music. I have 25 tv shows and movies on it, but I can't watch them unless I don't want or need to do anything else. When I am in class or trying to pay attention to the ground beneath my feet, I don't have the time to watch a movie. When I drive around, I'm sure as hell not watching movies. When I am taking the bus or someone I don't want to talk to is driving me around, I will watch movies.
