- kimos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8The chance of me digging goes down proportionally to the number of exclamation marks in the title...
- roguepirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what's the frame rate on this video?
- e3mw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is good, now the people who bought iPods just before the launch of the video iPod can stop whining.

Because I already have my 4G ipod photo = no more money out of pocket.
I actually installed linux on mine about a month ago. I have an hour (each way) commute on a train each day, so this is great stuff though its not quite at the level where I can see myself using it on a daily basis. I can deal with encoding my video to a specific format (and the needed mencoder step is actually pretty fast), but will be much more enthusiastic about this if they can manage to include a well-known (and thus readily avialable) codec.
Another feature I would love would be the ability the dynamically add songs/albums/etc to the "now playing" list - meaning I could browse my library while a song is playing and click it to queue it up next (or at the bottom of the playlist, or whatever)... anybody know if that can be done? (using linux or otherwise) - SgtM, on 01/29/2009, -0/+1http://sgtm.site90.net
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why (and how) would apple take this down?
this adds value to the nano without them having to expend developer resources, and it likely voids the warranty in some way so it's not like they have to support it... it's a win-win for them! - ncaa76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just got my 60GB Ipod and I love it, but the battery life sucks for video. Wonder how long the battery will be for vido on the nano
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PeterM: Apple will never have this taken down. What are they going to threaten people with? Reverse engineering is *legal*. They're not using Apple's software, even.
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Y would you buy this if you can buy a PSP for 150$ less."
Because a PSP is about 20 times bigger and 10 times heavier. And you'd need to buy a 4GB memory stick. - ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1toekneebullard:
What in God's name are you doing to that poor thing!? I had my third-gen iPod for nearly two years before I replaced it (not because it broke) with the new iPod with video.
Best purchase I've made in a long time. - longofest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2meh... You need to have an avi file that is formatted to perfectly fit the iPod's screen or it won't work.
- nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bricked my shuffle.
Nah more like "Chewing Gum Packet"-ed my shuffle.
JK. - Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now if only I could break down and buy one of the damned things. I've GOT the money for it, don't get me wrong, but whenever I take more than $100 out of my pocket for entertainment purposes it better involve sexual pleasure.
Although I could put my porn on there... wait, no... a Nano would never hold half of my porn.
... why is it I sense I've said too much? - PeterM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How long until Apple has this taken down?
- philhansen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Video looks surprisingly good on the nano. There is some A/V sync issues, but those are pretty minor. You of course have to convert the movies before you can watch them, but all it takes is a very simple mencoder command. you can find the details at:
http://ipodlinux.org/Video_player#Nano - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mine is great
toekneebullard keep it away from the Tesla coil
Uncompressed AVI is not interesting, let me know when it does xvid and/or h.264 - conquer343, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Y would you buy this if you can buy a PSP for 150$ less.
- slickrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1bricked my nano trying to put linux on it. its stuck on the disc mode screen. color me pissed
- VivaLaNation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i would do this to my nano but im scared i would f somthing up
- toekneebullard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I would so go for this except that within my first 90 days of buying an iPod, I'm on my third one...just can't trust that it'll last...
- toekneebullard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ricodued:
I've just been using it. The first one I returned the day of purchase, the second after it would erase itself nearly weekly.
Maybe it's all the powerlines I like to climb.... - G4M3R, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 Wow!!! I can watch movies on a 1.5" screen! That's awesome! [/sarcastic]
- jables, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sounds pretty kool though except with the whole format issue
- beejay54, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A case of beer to the first geek who can successfully hack the current Apple IPod firmware so that iPod Photo's act like the iPod video version. It's gotta be a download with a simple installer and un-installer for sure.
- jakebechtold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sound like a cool hack, especially since I just bought a nano.
- Zedle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0works great, i just played South Park on my 20gb 4G Color!
- jakv5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Engadget says the video is quite smooth
- Monza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL @ Sucresemoule
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Exclamation marks on Digg submissions make the baby jeebus cry.
- fugitivALiEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0reverse engineering is technically against the DMCA, making it "illegal" in the courts... as soon as more than 1 person knows about it, and that 1 person is you, you're taking a chance =/
- dylanA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i can watch video on my 1G mini.
- rhyno2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kimos, amen brother.
The world is simply not that exciting. - corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good news! Though I use OS X, to me, this is one of the main points of open source software. It allows you to do things that would never be possible through the software supplied with a product.
- cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0post a link to the article, not your blog.
- Fr3ak3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awsome
- Swimming_Bird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'd digg it if the site were up
- aspro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, some people do some stupid things. Why on earth would you want to watch video on a nano! It's damn small remember!
- JzLosman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0probably for the same reason they look at pictures on a screen that small. Whether its moving video or static photos, the size never changed. So if someone bought the ipod photo, why would they have a problem with the video at the same size as their photos.
Not to mention ***** portable TVs have had screens not much bigger for years. Adding the ability of video playback on your current iPod for no charge isn't something I would complain about (if everything goes right). - JzLosman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if you are talking about the nano, that is more understandable, but I think video playback on the Photo is just fine.
- RichMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pics of the nano playing a video plz, god damn it!!
- Tim-in-oz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now if they could get Video working on my Shuffle! THAT would be something.... :-p
- nfilatov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I did this about 3 moths ago and i messed up my whole ipod! It was a nano! It wouldn't even be recognized my the computer! Boot Was all messed Up!
- ForbesBingley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well there's a really obvious question: why on this green Earth of ours would anyone want to squint themselves into an early appointment with the opticians watching video on a screen that's barely a gnats arse hair wider than a commemorative postage stamp?
- koolaide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0haha, so true, canned_heat!
- Dr.House, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Thats awesome to know. There is always a way isn't there?
- Canned_Heat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow! What an incredible Digg!
No, no, not the story.
The fact that inDiggNation, the story poster, used the word "too" in its proper grammatical sense as opposed to "to" and "two" as most people seem to do nowadays.
InDiggNation must not have been educated in the public school system. -
