- shanafme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Here's how to "downgrade" the firmware back to one that actually works.
For PC user...
As posted by imdaShiy/ i modified it....
There's another way to downgrade the iPod firmware and reinstall version 1.0 without formatting or losing the music/files on your iPod. (I believe this DOES NOT work for Mac users, sorry)
1. Download iPodWizard here:
sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=153441
(download the release, top link of the two)
2. Extract the files, and launch the program.
3. Put in your Original CD,
On The iPodWizard, Click Open Updater..
point to the CD, Program Files/ iPod/ updater exe
4. Click Load on the iPodWizard
5. Click on DownGrade Firmware
6. Exit the Wizard
7. Open the iPodupdater directly from CD/ Program Files/ iPod/ Updater.exe
it will said ur iPod is OutDated 1.1
Click Update... instead of Restore....
and u will be back to 1.0
yaa...... backlight is on..
my video is working - shanafme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Here's some more details:
1) THIS ONLY AFFECTS 60GB iPods
2) It manifests itself almost exclusively with larger 200+ MB files (if you say that it 'works' but you are using something shorter than a 30 minute long show/film to test... it might not actually 'work' (It happens on my iPod for every movie, regardless of size).
3) ALL CONTENT FROM the Apple Store works fine
4) On the Mac, people have seen problems with both Handbrake and iSquint, but mainly iSquint - slatermethuen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This bug occurs for all of my videos that have been converted with Videora (smallest size ~90MB). Re-encoding one of the videos with Quick Time Pro caused it to work perfectly. It was not possible to use the new file conversion feature of iTunes 6.0.2 since the software reports that the file is already in the correct format for the iPod and will not re-encode it.
A cynic might think that Apple are deliberately trying to stop people encoding videos with third-party tools. - utch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am glad I didn't jump on the update bandwagon. w00t!

good tutorial on how to convert both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio videos to the correct Ipod Video format - thor17usa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I tried twice to get the update working on my iPod, but had to revert to version 1.1.2 to regain my iPod functions. Lots of other users are reporting problems on ilounge.com also: http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?t=173611
- porkmonkeys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just to let everyone know, apple decided to get rid of the "hold menu down for backlight". Now when you do it it jumps to the main menu. For me this is a more useful feature, but i can see why some people are upset.
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have the black 30GB iPod video and I just upgraded from the November firmware to the latest and I have seen no signs of any problems with any of the video podcasts, music videos, or any of the other video content I watch on the iPod.
- binaryHalf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a 2 GB nano. I normally keep my back light off cause it eats up a lot of charge. Since I upgraded the firmware, I can't turn the back light on by pressing down and holding the "Menu" button. It may not be a huge problem but it's causing a lot of headache and I'm no way changing the back light timer.
- Cab00se, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The way i see it with upgrading... "if it ain't broken, dont fix it." Im happy with running 1.0
- l0k1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Since all the video you get off of Itunes works fine. Don't you think apple did this on purpose to stop having pirated movies on your ipod?" (fosgate)
"I think if it was a move to stop piracy, they could have done a lot more & made it so that the 30Gbs had the same problem.
I think it's just a firmware bug, no conspiracy theory here." (shanafme)
agreed it's just a bug, and anyway - how could ripping dvds *i own* to ipod format be reasonably considered piracy? - dafuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a 60GB iPod and today it froze when I tried to play The Fantastic 4 movie. The file is about 384 MB. I had to do a reset on the iPod, but since then everything has been fine. I'm watching The Fantastic 4 right now with no problems.
- wolfwood390, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried doing this and when i click on Downgrade Firmwire it says no ipod is connected tot eh computer, but my ipod is connected. How can u fix this?
- metal345, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I 've tried to downgrade it but whenever i try step # 3 it doesnt work cus after i go to program files it just sends me to apple then to itunes then it stops, i can get to ipod...
what should i do.... - wolfwood390, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ignor my last comment, i dont know what i did but the program recognized my ipod and i got it to work, thanks for the info!
- AllStarEast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sorry my bad, my email is arturchik_ukraine@hotmail.com, please anybody who can help me out. having same problem with ma 60 GB black ipod video...
- TenaciousGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is anyone else's 5g Video (60gb) skipping A LOT of songs. I'll try to play some music, and since the update, it's been skipping about 1/3 of my songs, and it won't play them anymore, it just goes to the next one. It plays fine in my itunes, but it's pissing me off. Is there a way to fix this, does anyone know?
- chaos86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Look - The video problem is only with 60 gig Video Ipod, not the 30 gig Video Ipod..." - operator99
the video problem was on my 30 gb and was fixed by downgrading... - zulu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had exactly the same problem with my 60GB iPod after updating to 1.1; followed aforementioned advice and downgraded to firmware 1.0, voila, backlight and volume problems now resolved. Cheers.
- jackalope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ha ha, if you geniuinely believe that's true... just wait a couple of days and see the tirade that builds on the Apple forum discussion boards. Whenever Apple messes up (and yeah, they have a few times in the last couple of years -- especially with hardware -- and I say that as a devoted Mac fan (who's had to send in two Powerbooks and an iBook for repair)), they hear it plenty from their customers.
And not just on the Apple website. All the fan boards get a slew of angry posts.
In fact, I'd venture it's the other way around. When Windows screws up, it's like the sun coming up. Happens so often it's hardly original to even talk about it. Yet, when Apple screws up, it's a little more rare... so it gets lots of coverage. ; ) - AllStarEast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YO PPL pls help me out

- Failure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0airj13,
This sounds more like an encoding problem mate... i.e. the audio had not been ripped properly with the video. Are these videos from iTunes, or have you made them yourself? - necrosis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am so ***** tired of this god dam piece of ***** iPod video. I have the 60GB Black, and I updated it. I went to play some videos and found out that they freeze after about 20 seconds and then it continues on with no sound on all 130 videos I have all varying in size, length, and program used for encoding. I wish Apple weren't such ***** and that they would allow more than just mp4 playback. It is really annoying, and makes products like the Creative Vision M look much better. They only reason I have an iPod is because I was stupid enough to buy music in iTunes and quite a lot of it. I just really don't feel like dealing with the iPod. I wish that it would just work and not freeze, quit, not turn off, and not be the biggest piece of 400 dollar piece of *****.
- hoberion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ipod 60 gb video, same freakin issue
- sugafree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I would downgrade a Ipod, would i be able to upgrade it later on? Or will it just stay as a downgrade
- Failure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well...
I re-encoded the mp4 video using QuickTime Pro and guess what? The video plays fine now. I know some posts above have doubted that the problem is a backdoor copyright lockdown by apple, but if that is not the case, why does this solution work? Curious.
On the downside, my album art has gone again. *sigh*
Second gen video iPod anyone?? - mfloloves, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0downgrade to older firmware WITHOUT restoring
http://www.digg.com/apple/How_to_downgrade_to_older_(iPod)_firmware_WITHOUT_restoring - Ianbee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Okay, here's the fix for you Mac guys with a frozen 60 GB Video.
Mine had the permanent white screen, and wouldn't mount, or reset. When trying to reset, all it did was make a weird noise, and spin the drive up again, and give me the white screen.
Here,s the fix...
Hold down the MENU and SELECT buttons simultaneously until it goes black, and you feel no hard drive activity.
CAREFULLY.... with a third finger, press, and HOLD DOWN, the PAUSE button, this means you are holding down THREE buttons at this stage.
REMOVE your finger from the MENU button, whilst still HOLDING DOWN the SELECT and PAUSE buttons.
This will bring it back to life again, and enable it to show up on the desktop on your Mac.
I then re-installed version 1.0 , and this was a full factory default RESTORE.
Hope this helps you guys. ( and girls... )

South Australia - Failure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am on a 60GB Video, and have been having the same problem. Don't want to downgrade though, because on version 1.0 I was having issues with the ipod displaying album art!
Am going to try re-encoding the file with QuickTime, and see how that goes. Will keep everyone posted. - operator99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Look - The video problem is only with 60 gig Video Ipod, not the 30 gig Video Ipod, not the nano, not the ipod photo and not the shuffle!. Check out the Ilounge forums to see the extent of the problem. I have the 60 - upgraded and my videos were hosed - went back to 1.0 and all is fine again. Hopefully they will sort this out quickly - can't be good PR for their flagship player.
- twogunsalute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm glad i decided to hold off from updating my 5G ipod. I learned my lesson after the last update to Itunes 6 that screwed up a lot of windows machine. Seems like apple can not get it right with these updates.
- balfa7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow I'm so pissed, this is like the first time i EVER update ANYTHING and I get screwed like this! But thanks shanafme for your post on how to roll back the version! will have to do that tonite!
- combatcupcake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My video pod is my technically 5th pod (2nd gen was 1st). The 2nd gen one sorta still works, except the headphone jack broke off the circuit board so it cant output sound anymore (that horrible design was fixed since 3rd gen) Last one was a 4th gen, after a year the wheel started acting funny, got it replaced at the apple store and the new one just ***** up on me after about 1month, worked fine, disconnected it, then had to reconnect and it wouldnt mount, then when i disconnected again it just died with the battery icon and clicking sound. Apple seriously has to improve their replacement policy, give people new ones, not used refurbished ones, we pay enough for the thing, be nice to have it last for a few years.
Firewire has too many problems, its better than USB2 speedwise (more constant) but other than that its flawed, USB2 has almost no issues. Seems thought my pod doesnt want to charge if its disconnected from my PC but still plugged in. Could be cause it goes through a hub (powered though). Not sure about that issue.
I was about to upgrade to the new firmware when I heard about it, thought maybe it would fix the issue of not playing unless i reset (its only happend 2 or 3 times and only when in the car), but seems i will be holding off after hearing about more issues. - theatman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone have the iPod updater 2005-10-12 version somewhere? Really need this! If someone plz could host it somewhere, that would be great. Thanks in advance guys / gals!

Guess what: A 60GB iPod with Video, even with the new broken firmware, still holds 15 to 30 times as much as your Nano and plays videos converted with Quicktime or bought from iTunes. Rolled back to version 1.0, it plays videos converted with third-party applications, too. - combatcupcake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0forget ripping dvds you own, what about videos I CREATE? I put my demo reel on my video ipod :) Suck if it didnt work cause of the new firmware
- Hieros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey guess what problem I'm not having on my Nano! iPod Video -> OWNED
- gfisher2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No probs here - 4th gen 60GB. Smart playlists now update live on the iPod without resyncing back to iTunes, just like they used to. The new iTunes seems to be better too in terms of not bringing my PC to a total standstill (P4 2.4) when syncing with iPod or updating podcasts.
- MaverickC17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No problems here with my 30gb yet.
PS:I recommend 60GB if you're going to put your own video on it. I have the 30gb but I can only put about 75% of my video I have in iTunes on it. GET THE 60GB!!! - tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a good thing I didn't update the firmware, granted I don't have a video, but I have the 4G iPod Color. I downloaded the updater but never installed it. Just way too lazy.
- beggersfunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Okay i update my iPod 60g like 4 times (1 times updating restoring 3 times actually ), coz it only manage 20% of the sync and it took 20 hrs with it and still can't sync 100%..PATHETIC. I thought due to the upgrade but apparently my USB 2.0 PCI card are the 1 screwing up. Luckily i have another PCI Card that i suppose to give it away to my sister in law and its was iPod compatible..phew..anyways today i encode my NBA game its an .avi file with about 700mb encoded with Podner and watch the game in the train and it was working fantastic. In my experiance better to restore it rather then upgrade, trust me this is my 4th iPod since the 2nd generation. All of them get funky after upgrading, and USB 2.0 somewhat unreliable..not like Firewire. Thats my 2 cents!
- PrplHaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have not yet updated, even though I have a 5th Gen 30GB because I have seen a small percentage of folks with the 30GB experiencing the video problems many claim only crop up on the 60GB version.
And, I like the backlight off feature using the menu button in case I'm watching a video speech and want to dim the screen temporarily.
-haZe - Nukem945, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This update makes the "0 Second" backlight option useless on the Video iPod. There's no way you can view videos w/o backlighting on the thing and you can't use the menu button to toggle the light anymore. Apple, where is the Settings option for this new functionality? I want the choice of turning it back to the way things were!
If this is indeed an unintentional bug from the improved video fast forwarding, then we'll see how fast Apple can correct this problem. I just have a feeling this device is gonna go the way of the PSP, in that putting your own content on it will lock you out of the new firmware updates until someone finds a way to hack it. - combatcupcake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anyone notice the video ipod go to play a song, but then the time doesnt move? I've been getting this a couple of times, oddly only when I go to play in the car (headphone out to aux of my car stereo). I can try to play any song and it just sits at the start and doesnt play. I have to reset (menu+select) to get it working again.
- fosgate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Since all the video you get off of Itunes works fine. Don't you think apple did this on purpose to stop having pirated movies on your ipod?

Yeah, I found that out the hard way too. What it does now is take you back to the main menu, which is pretty useless compared to turning the backlight on/off. It's worth it to downgrade as thats a bigger problem than the ones they fixed. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0some more : http://ezbuzz.blogspot.com/2006/01/apple-ipod-mini-4gb-gold.html
