- KevinWhite, on 12/18/2007, -4/+79The article is interesting, but the headline of this submission is very misleading. The article never states the ipod touch is smarter....only that it is smaller/thinner and has more storage space.
Remember what they took out of the touch:
cell radio
bluetooth
camera
speaker
mic - inactive, on 12/18/2007, -0/+35Good article, but the Title here is TOTALLY wrong..
- cyberdork, on 12/18/2007, -2/+26Just imagine iPod touch + Skype + mic&speaker
- mesysg, on 12/18/2007, -3/+25Excellent media device, especially when it is jailbroken!
- inactive, on 12/18/2007, -4/+25The one thing that constantly bugs me about owning a Touch, is that everyone who sees it asks: "so how are you liking the iPhone?". To which I always have to explain it to them...
- ECas123, on 12/18/2007, -2/+19Why is there a picture of the iPhone in an article about the iPod Touch?
- ozid, on 12/18/2007, -0/+16because normal people won't notice.
- stevenbao, on 12/18/2007, -0/+12That was an extremely lame article (which is out of the BusinessWeek norm) simply stating that the iPod touch has more storage space and gives some figures of costs, which is summed up by that the iPod touch can have more space, be thinner, and cheaper because it doesn't need the iPhone phone features.
Well, isn't that obvious.
I'm deciding whether to get an iPhone and return my day-old 16gb iPod touch for the features (namely camera, speaker, and mic), or just stick with it. - stevenbao, on 12/18/2007, -1/+12Protip: double-tap the Home button to pull up a music controller window.
- ronin510, on 12/18/2007, -1/+11www.bauer-power.net spam hidden in tinyurl
- shark72, on 12/19/2007, -4/+12I like how the submitter decided to add their own typo.
Original article: "its sibling the iPhone."
I guess 1carmen figured that it's just not a good Digg submission without at least one grammatical error, and change that to "it's". Brilliant! - cyberdork, on 12/18/2007, -2/+8ONLY when it's jailbroken.
I just love Labyrinth! - Myonosken, on 12/18/2007, -2/+8The iphone camera wasn't that great- if you need good quality prints or low light images, get a cheap camera.
- kavendano14, on 12/18/2007, -1/+7*jailbraked*, I know, it's stupid but you gotta keep up with homebrew grammar
- Speed, on 12/18/2007, -2/+8Bluetooth: Syncing, accessories, etc?
Camera: Quick snapshots and such (cell phone cameras can actually be useful)
Speaker: Listening without headphones?
Radio: Yes, sometimes I like to listen to the radio and not just my iPod music, that was one thing I loved about my old Zen Micro: I could tune into The Bear or Sonic when I wanted to and discover new music perhaps, or just get a variety (or hear 20 minutes of ads). I shouldn't need to carry a separate device to listen to the radio on the go. Almost every other MP3 player maker has figured this out, why not Apple? - CaviMike, on 12/18/2007, -0/+5Inside? All I saw was the exact same damn recycled picture of the front.
- dshPls, on 12/19/2007, -0/+5Yeah but I like to watch youtube videos on my iPhone without earbuds, my girlfriend with an iTouch doesn't have that luxury.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+4tried and it sucked. Labyrinth for the win! (now when would the developer come up with a fix that would solve the occassional screen-flickering?) not that it ruins the gameplay a single bit
- skidooer, on 12/18/2007, -1/+5They have VOIP working on the Touch complete with a mic. But Skype, being a proprietary protocol, will probably never happen.
- ronmexico, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4If they had put a hard drive in it you would be complaining they didn't use flash. Obviously there's no pleasing some people.
- katrayun, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4But then you still have to look at and utilize the touchscreen, no? That's hardly the same as the easy 'blind' controls of other iPods.
- CaviMike, on 12/18/2007, -2/+6SMA lle R/T hinn ER
- davideparker, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Apostrophe's and they're use's.
- SLockhart, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Audio only for me. I'm sure video podcasts are cool to but the second gen Nano doesn't do video. I think the third gen one does though.
- orgazmo, on 12/18/2007, -2/+5I'd still have mine if only it had Bluetooth so it could link up with any cell phone to browse the web... Trying to find a wifi hotspot is just a hassle.
Why no BT?! So simple... - inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3If the touch had blutooth and could link to other cell phone devices, i wouldn't have probably bought an iphone afterwards. I agree with greensky on this matter.
- greensky, on 12/18/2007, -0/+3I'm sure they didn't want to kill the iPhone market. I agree with you though, it would be so nice to be able to link it w/a cell.
- pyrates, on 12/18/2007, -0/+3Only when Apple releases their sdk if they will allow voip apps.
- ronmexico, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3And if they had come out with a 30 gig model you would have said they were short sheeting people by not selling a 60 gig model. Your attitude "boggles the mind".
- Qumahlin, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Because the customers like what their selling? Is that so hard for people like you to comprehend? Pretty much every company ***** on you weather they do it in front of you or do it behind your back...the thing about it is, no matter which way they do it, if their products continue to please you, you will continue to take it.
- hourog, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3If you Jailbreak the iPod touch, have good access to wi-fi , and add the iPhone apps you'll never miss the phone. However, if you need constant access to update email then go with the phone for sure. You'd be amazed how many open networks are out there, EXCEPT when you really, really need one!
- ChromaVita, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3160gb Classic FTW! Because sometimes I just want to listen to Shaq Diesel, and now I have room for my entire music library.
- DavX, on 12/18/2007, -0/+3Did you just suggest that "cell radio" means "FM Radio"? A cellular radio is the part of the phone/device that allows it to talk to the cellular network. An FM radio is completely different.
- hustl3r, on 12/18/2007, -3/+6You need to try iPhysics. (http://iPhone.r4m0n.net)
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -1/+4even before buying the iphone, i knew the camera wouldn't be awesome, but after having been using it for like 1 day and 20 hours and experimenting with taking pictures with it, I would say it's a good camera that can do the job quickly and take decent quality pictures. Lighting is horrible I agree, but if I'm okay with manually manipulate gamma, contrast etc with an external software after I'm done with uploading the raw pic to a website or my computer, things actually come back from worse to normal.
It's not a great camera and nobody expected it to be great, but it just does the job. - inactive, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3He's talking about the ipod touch which ISN'T a phone. So he's still carrying his phone anyway which already has a camera - why do you need one on your media player too?
- jdoo, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3The iPhone has all of that. Why not get one of those?
- Brockmann, on 12/19/2007, -1/+3I don't know about you, but I don't know many people who own enough music to fill an 80GB iPod. Music that they actually care about.
The price of solid state storage will come down over time. SSD capacities will increase and every one will stop crying that they don't have enough space to carry their 120GB Norwegian death metal collection every where with them. - heathuff23, on 12/18/2007, -3/+5Thats the stupidest comment I've seen in awhile (and believe me, I've read alot of comments) So to get this straight, your not going to buy an mp3 player unless it has a camera? I only carry 2 devices, my phone, which is also a camera (yes, you heard me, its a phone AND a camera!) and my ipod touch.
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2The classic uses a hard drive you idiot.
- MewTwo, on 12/18/2007, -1/+3Listening to music on the speaker of an iPod would suck, suck, suck.
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2the distinction between the two gets harder after you jailbreak.... then its like ---- "Yeah, it just doesnt take pictures or make calls..." - Gotta love SMS relay services :-)
- katrayun, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2You might be amazed. There are quite a few people out there with huge music collections - more than I'd ever need, and I can fill the entire 14gb you actually get with the 16gb Touch - and yes, that's all music I listen to regularly.
Add in the fact that they may be used for audio books as well, which can take up a hefty chunk of space, and they're awesome used as a portable hard drive, and it gets easier to see how people could fill up that amount of space. - Qumahlin, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2Exactly. I bought an 8GB iphone after returning my 16 GB touch. Even jailbroken my 16GB touch simply didn't do it for me primarily due to the lack of an external speaker for when watching videos or showing youtube clips to friends.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2just curious...8 GB of video or audio podcast? I'm kinda new to all this so I may be wrong but in my opinion it seems like podcasts are more entertaining than some boring music that you keep listening to over and over again. I like how they keep updating and publishing for free new podcasts. now when will we be able to download video podcasts to our touch/iphone through wi-fi? I mean seriously! I could download a podcast of say, for example, G4tv in the morning using my home wireless network, finish watching it on the subway/car/horse/whatever ride I choose to take and delete it and put a new one before leaving work! The idea could have brought gazillions of tech-savvy businessmen under apple's umbrella!
- migitalwarfare, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2which is also why this article is wrong. there's no way in hell the ipod classic will be the last hard drive based model, considering Apple's largest Flash based unit is only 16GB. they've got a long way to go before the Classic customers will even glance at the flash based models
- Kanaka, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1Umm....are you retarded by any chance?. How would i know you have to utilize the touchscreen to manage playback if i hadn't used the device and the double tap function as well as ability to add events in calendar only came into being after the 1.1.2 update by which time i'd already gotten an iPhone. It also doesn't have email functionality and NO i DO NOT WANT TO JAILBREAK! and void my warranty. It should there out of the box without hacking.
BTW.... "It only makes you look like a dumb and non-sense"....??? that was highly skillful of you. - greensky, on 12/18/2007, -2/+3I still contend the mini's were the best. Not only did they have a nice form factor, but the battery is easily replaceable and you can replace the hard drive with a flash drive as well.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1Yep...I couldn't resist purchasing the iphone after having been fiddling around with the touch for a couple of days. And after jailbreaking the touch, my desire to own the iphone increased manifold. I just dashed to the store to get the phone. Ipod touch is a great device but if you got the money to burn, iphone can't be beaten.
- artwithbyte, on 12/19/2007, -2/+3*they're* in place of *their*, *whether* in place of *weather* Hmm, you need an editor. Next time you want to ***** on my point, email me your comment beforehand and I can check it for you.
And "is it so hard for *people like me* to comprehend"? Well, it sure is my friend. That's why I said that it "boggles the mind". -
