- poponegra, on 11/11/2007, -11/+354Dugg for using a black guy to prove it.
- CipherFX, on 10/10/2007, -4/+109I can just hear Kanye West saying, "The iPod Touch doesn't like black people."
- a3r0, on 10/10/2007, -11/+96"Their supplier or suppliers of the screen ought to be a damn shame for making Apple look bad."
Yay, fanboyism. Any other company would be blamed for faulty hardware, but not Apple. It's those horrible, horrible suppliers who have tarnished the spotless reputation of Steve Jobs! - Alegoo92, on 10/10/2007, -16/+93Dugg for using House to prove it.
- Alegoo92, on 10/10/2007, -2/+78Not just ANY black guy.. that's Dr. Foreman!!
- JayD16, on 10/10/2007, -7/+82Never buy a first generation apple product...
- kenvsryu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+38Cool I watch Friends just fine.
- Drizzit, on 10/10/2007, -5/+33I too have this problem. If nothing by later this week from Apple about it, back to the store it goes.
- thechosen, on 10/10/2007, -4/+30Not only that, the iPod Touch's clock is five minutes behind!
- ahoyhoy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25Dr. Foreman is a pretty Negative Black guy. Seriously, is he ever happy?
- esbi, on 11/11/2007, -0/+17The iPhone can display 16.7 million. So the Touch can display 16,699,999 colors.
- hokkos, on 11/11/2007, -8/+25"Negative Black Effect" ???
I personally believe that ... The iTouch is racist - thatsmyaibo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18I agree. If you are not happy about a product you spent so muc on, you should not have to keep it. I however got mine on Friday and don't have a problem. Maybe it's localized to certain shipments in certain parts of the country. I'm in CA by the way.
- Repeater2000, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17This is AT&T's fault somehow.... I know it.
- ST0N3, on 10/10/2007, -7/+23dugg for the use of Foreman to show the negative black effect. I also am interested to know whether or not this is the case with OFFICIALLY purchased iTunes store TV shows/movies
- ahoyhoy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Of course. What responsible company would spend a few minutes testing each batch of their product when they could be thinking of new negative advertising towards their competitors?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14I don't know, but without 'black' it's pretty much a moot point.
- jcoakes9, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16For me, at least, I have this problem with every video, and while it may not look very bad from the pictures, it is really very disconcerting when actually watching video. Your eyes expect certain areas to be black, ie, shadows, and it is especially pronounced in the transition from gray to black. Its a little weird to have a title fade from white, to almost black, then to bright gray, and then finally turn black.
I'll be going in to the store tomorrow to plead my case, but i'm not hopeful for much more than a replacement with the same problem. Let's hope Apple institutes some form of recall. Petition anyone? - Angostura, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Postings on the Apple discussion boards suggest that this is not limited to video. It also effects photos and icons.
- caesar0801, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16what the hell are you blabbing???
- wafflez, on 11/11/2007, -0/+13only impatient little children don't, then whine about it later.
- betasp, on 10/10/2007, -7/+19Buried for a slow site and the other 5 stories to hit the front page about this issue.
- aaronm67, on 11/11/2007, -1/+12What the ***** is FTFY? Seriously people, we're getting a little crazy with the abbreviations.
- Pravilic, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13I Remember someone saying it's a problem with the Anti-Reflective coating reflecting light back onto the pixels or something of that nature. So don't get ur hopes up.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -9/+20wow apple apologists in full force.
- alwaysmc2, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11The screen of my original Creative Zen vision is higher-resolution and bigger than the iPod Touch (though not wide screen), and I don't like to watch videos on it.
- D3koy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I've had a couple of video players, iPod and otherwise, and I've never had any desire to watch movies on them (I just bought them for the larger HDD's)
- GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Of course it's an issue. They're defective screens. Not cheaper .. DEFECTIVE. No doubt some Apple employees are on the first plane to whatever country they're manufactured in to short it out (and give someone a kick up the ass). This is what happens when you outsource an expensive product (and important, given the press attention) to cheap labour that follow an automated process and havent the first clue if issues arise.
- TheNewFlesh, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12I thought by the Title of this article that it would be something similar to pressing Control-Option-Command-8 (not the keypad 8) in OSX
Try it! - aaronm67, on 11/11/2007, -0/+7I didn't really go out of my way, I don't really like using abbreviations like that in the first place. Adding in a bunch of "BRB JK LOL ROFLMAO" is a good way to make it look like you're a middle school girl when you're typing.
- whistlerpro, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11This is the one thing stopping me from buying early.
- imikedaman, on 11/11/2007, -1/+7I like how you went out of your way to avoid using WTF.
- Soulhuntre, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6He is - and that's the sad part. If this was an MS product he'd be spitting teeth - but it's all OK from Apple.
- miniboss, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Heres a clearer example of the problem. The lower one a nano in an ugly homemade case and the top is the Touch.

YouTube: iPod Nano vs Touch - Straight Shot http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXbTb5jvuhE - PixelVision, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6do they have money on your planet?
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Agreed. Also "letting this slip through QA".
They all seem to do this, so you can be sure it didn't "slip through". I'm guessing this is part of the cost savings that makes it cheaper than an iPhone, and cheaper than a 160G Classic for that matter. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You watch movies while driving a bus?
- ToadLeg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Looks like his version of Daft Punk:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fx5Jlap6uZY - aliguana, on 11/11/2007, -1/+6on the iPhone, the black border surrounding the movie is black. on the touch, it's more like a charcoal grey. On the other hand, the guy on the bed (on the iPhone) is bright and clear, the same guy on the touch is almost a shadow. Either the touch is using a cheaper screen, or the touch is only 16k colours, or the touch has some serious firmware issues.
- alwaysmc2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6oh, man... at first I thought you were making fun of complicated OS X commands, but that is a real one. -_-
"Control-Option-Command-8: Switch to White on Black" - insomniac8400, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6LOL, you can't be serious.
- dudinatrix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5http://images.wikia.com/uncyclopedia/images/5/5d/Thatsracist.gif
- Soulhuntre, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Yeah - sheesh - be a good Apple drone. How dare you expect your $300+ video player to actually be viewable. You're lucky Uncle Steve didn't just sell you an empty box.
- tehWyman, on 08/19/2009, -1/+5You do realize there is a reply button now?
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4didn't you read the article? it's not video, it's the screen. they just used a video to demonstrate it. naturally anything that is displayed on the screen is effected.
- trebe, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5nope. Is there any mirror of this?
- msgyrd, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7"Never buy a first generation product"
FTFY - Smeed, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Why dont you check before wasting your time posting?
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5No, you're missing what is happening. It isn't a contrast issue. The areas that are supposed to blackest actually become lighter and reflective than areas which are merely dark grey.
- GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Well there have been ALOT of people notice this issue, both customers and plenty review sites. Given the number of people I tend to believe what they are seeing. Have you seen one first hand? If not then dont dismiss everyone that has. Just going by the video comparisons it does look pretty bad. Even ultra cheap screens with lower bits per pixel used in countless mobile phones and media players arent that bad.
