foxmajik.livejournal.com — This article shows you how to quickly and easily install two additional operating systems on your iPod (RockBox and Podzilla aka iPod Linux) with a startup menu to choose between them.

- ErifNeerg, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6this isn't an article, it's livejournal.it says to use the rockbox installer but you just need the daily build unzip on the root of the ipod.
- timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3iPodLinux supports the 1st-3rd gen iPod's officially. Everything new is still unsupported (but works for the most part from what I understand).
RockBox only runs on the 4g and higher iPods, including Nanos and Minis.

- BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -20/+10Its his live journal, and he signed up yesterday.

- timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26So, because he just found Digg (yes, there are plenty of people that don't know about it) and because he's posted it on a blog, it's not legit? Maybe if he were linking to the actual location of the article off his blog, it would be a legitimate complaint, but this is straight to the article. Does the fact that I joined Digg on July 10th, 2005 and you joined on January 19th, 2006 make me a better person in that case? :P
Look, he's new, we get it. No need to rain on his parade.
- getrealnow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7have you ever used rockbox? Its a lot better then the original firmware that comes with the ipod. Drag and drop, other formats, games, custom skins. I just talked about rockbox in the other article about ipod never going to be beat? haha.
- ErifNeerg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5maybe, but it still can't handle video, podcast, or read the itunes db. i mostly still with apple until then. yes drag and drop is nice but itunes helps my music be nice an organized.
- Ilyanep, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4...and it voids your warranty from what i understand
- baraqiyal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Reading Jozer's comments a while back ( http://www.digg.com/apple/Improve_your_iPod_with_Rockbox ) was enough to steer me away from using alternate firmwares. Although having additional games would be kind of cool.
- getrealnow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The only problem with that article is that its 51 days old. I gaurantee you there has been several updates for it. If you look at the older versions for other DAP its finish, it works better the the original firmware. I would suggest you try rockbox for ipod or whatever dap you have and if you dont like it, you can just put the original firmware back on it.
- topato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Jozer says in his comment that you get 3-4 hours, when rockbox's actual battery life during nonstop playback is closer to 6-8. It's more for some Ipods, less for others. Battery life benchmarks are availible here: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/IpodRuntime

- Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, what new features does this offer. I would be interested in it, but the author simply states that he doesn't like when software writers cripple their hardware, but doesn't offer what in fact his hack enables.
- drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This hack lets you play more audio formats and has more features like playback without gaps between songs.
- skyshock21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can play Ogg, FLAC, Divx just for starts. Read up, it's pretty cool. You can do video on your iPod Nano with this.
- skyshock21, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5This is the only way to make an iPod fully functional. Currently the Apple crippleware doesn't let me play the formats that I want. This is a great way to allow me to play ogg, FLAC, etc... Excellent, I now have a reason to buy an ipod
- Bitruder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I don't see how you can call it crippleware. Apple doesn't hide what an iPod can and cannot do. If you buy a TV without highdefinition support, you don't complain that they've "crippled" the TV. iPods don't have the software to play some formats, they don't have that feature and then "cripple" it.
- skyshock21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@Bitruder
Your analogy doesn't hold water. If a TV's hardware is capable of displaying 1080i resolution, but the manufacturer decided they didn't want to include that in the TV's software, then *YES* I absolutely would consider it crippleware because it's stifling the hardware's full potential for no good reason. This is EXACTLY what Apple does with it's firmware. Hell, the Nano is capable of video, but they didn't build that functionality into the Nano because they wanted to release another one to make more money off of to play video. Thanks Apple!
- fatcat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4it doesn't matter that it is his blog it matters that it is him trying to help other people, i have seen forum posts that have been front paged and no one was bitching so what if hes not a professional or couldn't afford his own URL its helping people learn new things boo hoo, quit your bitching
- RichardHendrix, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4not for macs :(
- hoodedrobin, on 10/12/2007, -13/+8AWW I'm sorry...
Well I guess that leaves all 10 of you out in the cold...
- hoodedrobin, on 10/12/2007, -13/+8AWW I'm sorry...
- dfour, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So am I the only one who installed podzilla but now my ipod is unable to enter disk mode and connect to my PC? I can select "enter disk mode" when I plug it in, however it doesn't do anything. Also I can't boot the ipod into the regular mac firmware anymore. On top of that I can't even turn off the ipod. If I click shutdown from the podzilla menu, it reboots it everytime.
Yeah I think i'll stick with the regular ipod firmware, if I can ever get my ipod to be recognized again to uninstall podzilla that is.- Yoshi39, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Had the same problem awhile back (iPod not connecting to the pc even when in disk mode) even though you can't see the iPod the computer can so download the hp ipod format tool and run it then use the ipod updater to reinstall the firmware. If you dont belive this works jus try it.
http://ipodlinux.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10931 - JoePineapples, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had a similar hairly moment a while back while installing podzilla. I fixed it by plugging the ipod into my PC, rebooting it (manu and play on mine) and then runnung the firmware updater once it detected it. All was right again.

- dfour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey man I tried that link you gave me but still no go. The ipod is not being detected by the computer at all.
- danjal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i've got it going, looks intersting, and it's handy having the apple os boot as well, tho i can't get my music displayed on linux pod mode.. tho i'm sure it's something i've don wrong on my end.
- DMedina, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Dude, this guy is a furry. That's as far as I need to go.
- nolanb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0im having trouble getting rockbox on my ipod photo...when i try to install the latest thing with WinRar i cant find the installer and all i get is a bunch of text documents and such..can someone explain y i cant install rockbox?
- Kvad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did not work for me as flawlessly, nice idea. It should have a countdown timer or something to default to. (unless it already does and I have not looked)
- Breakdown05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ya'll Ipooers have iRiver to thank because without them RockBox wouldnt have been started.
- co5mo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RockBox can make your NANO play videos but only uncompressed avis no divx no xvid (10 times bigger file)
