- leohart, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50I don't think there is an iPod killer until there is an iTunes killer.
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -8/+52This very same story http://digg.com/music/MP3_Players_for_Summer_2006 was submited just two days ago, and because it's title didn't contain one of the magic words (such as Amazing, Stunning, Mind Blowing, Revealed, Digg, Apple or Ipod) it barely got any diggs (just 7).
I swear that if someone would make a title such as: "Amazing picture of a girl in a tub" that certain website would be promoted to the first page in a matter of hours :D - shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+43yeah.. that stupid sneaker is REALLY going to be an iPod killer
- BillyK, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30Wow. They just can't resist the term 'iPod Killer," even though it's been used to death and disproven every time.
Can we just agree on "iKiller" now? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+27Spybot - I agree. I have a Creative Zen Micro. One feature it has that NONE of the iPods have is a user-replaceable battery. Before someone says "but the iPod battery is replaceable," I want to mention that by "user" replaceable, I mean you don't have to take the damn think apart to do it. I consider this a major flaw in the iPod. "Buy the warranty" they will say, or "send to it Apple for 'repair'" ...
Sorry, Apple's got a lot of good stuff going for it. But I don't like investing in anything that will, with my frequent use, become unusable because of a simple design flaw. I shouldn't have to send anything in for "repair" unless something catastrophic happens. The HD fails. The screen is busted. But to replace a battery? C'mon. As much as people want to defend Apple, you have to admit that's something they could improve. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17theres an ipod killer out there?
sounds great for a movie. - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10> Geterix wrote: "The Ipod is already killed."
You just keep telling yourself that, Geterix. - mikexstudios, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15radu: Just for you :): http://digg.com/links/Amazing_picture_of_a_girl_in_a_tub
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Oh how very conformist of you. You of the cult of pod seem to becoming the very thing that you accused people who use Windows of being.
Sheep. - shadowmoses, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11None stand a chance hardly killers, saying this if more worked with iTunes they would be much more successful!
- Firemeboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I'm interested in the viip p2. I'm a GPS junkie, and think that it would be interesting to listen to an podcast about a place or series of places, while finding those places with your GPS device. Geocaching + Podcasting = Goodness
- modsuperstar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13It doesn't matter what other competitors throw out there, they still don't offer what Apple has all along, ease of use and uncluttered interface. There always have been better players in the market, yet iPod still reigns supreme. It's been proven over and over and over again, more is not always better. VHS, Game Boy, PS2, DS were all inferior to their competition, yet still managed to edge out their challengers that featured more bells and whistles. Apple will release the updated iPod and roll over all of these devices.
- fliped, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Why doesnt Apple just come up with a new iPod and call it "iPod Killer"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Ipod killer is overused. I think that 8.50 evergreen one is a very good idea, I might buy one. I also really liked the Viliv P1, it for some reason reminds me of an ipod, but is better and widescreen (remember the prototype video ipod we kept on seeing on the internet?)
- anasazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6they seemed to skip all of creative's offerings, which seem to be the only realistic competition to the iPod at this time.
- jeffgtr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The NEC looks kind of interesting. But none of these look like anything close to an ipod killer, when my ipod wears out looks like I'll be buying another ipod. The only things I find lacking in my 40gb 3G ipod is space and a graphic eq of some sort (although this may be available from a 3rd party). Contrary to what some people say, your not locked into itunes, most of my music is ripped right from the cd at 192kbps, works great! Apple has it right and it looks like it's going to be a tall order for anyone to one up them.
- ComradeTim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If they come out with a Video iPod, you say? Lunacy! Seriously, that will never, never happen.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Personally i am betting on the hideous silver shoe player to destroy Apple's iPod business once and for all. There's no stopping the cylon boot mp3 player.
- noeljohnhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://www.mp3newswire.net/stories/6002/summer2006-two.html
part 2 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ignoring the firestorm of pro- and anti-iPod comments, this article is definitely getting a digg for its comprehensive look at competing players. Heck, they even included the MP3 shoe.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What's with all these 256mb, 1gb players being offered? Is this 1999? Seriously, you can't have true freedom and portability if you have to constantly hook the device up to the computer and download new tracks and players. Maybe if it was done wirelessly and automated but still, throw in some extra memory people.
- revmitcz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Is it just me, or do most of those look like 3D-renderings of what the product "should" look like?
I used a smaller-capacity version of that Samsung YP-U2 player. An iPod Shuffle killer, MAYBE, but otherwise..? no chance in hell.
I'm with most of the others on that Viliv P1 player - it actually looks decent and useable. However, the name isn't very catchy (from a marketing standpoint) and the biggest problem with "killing the iPod" is competing with the plethora of 3rd-party devices. I use my iPod almost solely in my car with my Alpine stereo and the KCA-420i adapter that puts a dock connector in my dashboard. I don't see a lot of Apple-compatible dock connectors out there, do you?
On a final note - am I correct in thinking that Sony one has controls on the BACK of the player? Jesus, they're getting weirder every day. - MyDocuments, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5hammydude, let me know when you find the evergreen for that price and i'll buy one too
- mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I'd love to see an article showing the mp3 players that were supposed to be the ipod killers of 2005 and 2004. Ipod killers tend to suck ass. :P
- Zero82z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Mike - I actually laughed out loud when I saw some of the comments on that page...

'Also a sidenote, I love that "Sleek and Simple Design" is regarded as a feature. That's marketing *****. It's not a feature. An engineer was not presented with a spec that said "Feature #1: sleek design, Feature #2: simple design, Feature #3: Play music"'
I am sorry, but the fact that the iPod is visually attractive is not marketing *****. Yes Apple's marketing department emphasizes the fact that the design of the Pod is sleek and simple because that's what people want. But the visual look of the product was a DESIGN CHOICE. Look at all of Apple's other products. Compare the iMac to a random desktop PC from Dell. It seems to me that the visual design is MUCH more important to Apple than to Dell.
The fact is that the iPod is designed to be something that people will be using on a daily basis. It makes sense from a design point of view to make it as attractive and easy to use as possible. If "sleek and simple design" was not one of the initial requirements when the whole idea of the iPod was proposed over there at Apple, it is simply because it was assumed that anything made by Apple must be gorgeous.
And FYI I do not own a Mac. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you consider a similar statement has been made by at least three other people commenting on this story, no you're not the only one.
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The problem in beating the ipod is the interface. The combination of simple menu's and that scroll wheel are just perfect and probably just about impossible to beat from a mass market perspective.
The only way to beat the ipod is will better value and more features. IMO the upcoming Sirius portable receiver is the only thing on the horizen for summer 2006 that could get me to leave my ipod at home. The ability to store mp3's, receive and record live music/shows all with a device the same size as an ipod is...well great. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"nice binary logic douchebag."
If that's best reply you could come up to his post then you should stop now. Think about you're calling him a douchebag because of his opinion on an MP3 PLAYER, of all things. Are we in grade school or what? - dorkusmalorkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Are you in Soviet Russia?
- pwsegal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The only device that will be able to challenge Apples dominance in the portable music device space is one that licenses Apples FairPlay DRM so that it will work with iTMS and thus use the libraries of music bought from iTMS that people already "own".
- dotdan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Where are the >60GB players? I'm sure there are quite a few people with decent sized collections, and when you start adding video, space disappears quickly.
I wonder what happened with iRiver too. They were ahead of Apple by miles in the HDD Player department, and now they have nothing with a reasonable harddrive that can compete. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5is it just me, or does it seem that every time something is labelled as a "_______ Killer", it just doesn't end up that way?
- modsuperstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is some suspect logic. Apple is being exclusionary by creating a closed system for distribution of their products? I come from the Mac side of the fence and see how there is no option to use DRMd WMP files on my computer at all. Even if I wanted to buy another mp3 player, Microsoft has made sure that I need to cross to Windows to use their created standard for buying music from the assorted online music stores. No thanks. Apple has actually extended the olive branch to PC users by actually making software that works on their system. All I've seen is Microsoft tuck tail and run away from supporting WMP on the Mac platform. I would be open to trying other mp3 players, but essentially Microsoft has cut the tether on that idea by abandoning the Macintosh.
- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Stop spamming your stupid submitt, loser.
- chadu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5with the shoe on there, i thought this article was a joke.
- AKBryant54, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9i use an ipod. u know why? because its good. sure the battery power totally sucks ass, but the simple and clean look it has is what i couldnt get over when looking at these "iKillers". buttons are so overrated, the clickwheel is awesome.
- Ikean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3
Anyone that doesn't understand the chromed-out shoe obviously doesn't live in the right hood.
. - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not at all surprising this has turned into the typical "Apple Rule.." "No Apple Sucks!".."No it doesn't" "Does too!" "Does not!!" etc.
Too bad, this could have been a halfway decent discussion. There are quite a few interesting new players either coming out or just out. Too bad so many people are into name calling fanboyism. - Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Welcome to the wonderful, fast-paced word of technology. Dont let the door hit you on the way out.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's been said before but bears repeating. There will be no iPod killer until there is an iTunes killer. By that standard, only the guys at Allofmp3/AllTunes are in a position to kill the iPod, since they are the only ones with a superior music store. Maybe they should team up with the Art.Lebedev guys and bring out a really slick-looking player to pair with Allofmp3.
That's assuming the Art.Lebedev guys are actually capable of bringing a product to market. - noeljohnhoward, on 10/12/2007, -15/+18no no
here's whats different
People who are anti- ipod are so, not because its a bad mp3 player, but because they have a hard on when it comes to bashing Apple in any way they can,
when people say windows users are sheep, it is because they are following a trend of using an inferior system, where using an ipod is joining the masses in choosing a much better product - Leon21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Until Apple opens up its iTunes to use other players, nothings gonna touch iPod. I agree that the Viliv's look pretty nice as do some of the others with the bigger screens, but unless i can use my iTunes with them, i really dont care.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The ipod is not the most popular player because it is the best one available. Why it is popular is irrelevant, and we may never know, but its continued success comes from the fact that it is popular already. People want what they see their friends with. They want what the TV tells them is cool. Things like price and features are only a secondary condition, if that. People just think "I want an ipod!", they don't bother to consider other alternatives, they just buy the ipod. Therefore making lists of "ipod killers" is a waste of time, because the ipod will only die when it stops being popular. This has nothing to do with technology, or features, or price, or the appearance of the player itself, it has everything to do with image and popularity and other intangible marketing concepts. So if you want to be "cool" and be like everyone else, get the ipod. If you care more about features than image, look around at players from other companies. You might still decide on the ipod, as it does have benefits in some categories, but at least you will be making an educated decision, and not an ignorant burst of consumer spending.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Nothing that is hyped as a _______ killer ever actually IS.
Killzone anyone? - mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5SHUT THE ***** UP WITH THE "KILLER" *****. Please, for the love of God, stop using that stupid ***** phrase. No "killer" hardware or software has yet to kill the product it was intended to.
- envy860, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The problem is they are trying to be iPod killers. When a company markets something as an iPod killer, they have already lost. Bring something new, easy to use, and looks nice, and market it as something else, not just trying to bring down the iPod. That's how to possibly create a successful product. The iPod isn't goign anywhere; the user base is already too large.
- thegsa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Maybe Someone Should Make A Plugin/Crack/Firmware Emulator/etc. That Allows Any MP3 Player Work With iTunes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Since the iPod doesn't play Ogg Vorbis files, how is it a substitute for my player when I've got buttloads of files in that format?
