- smashingmonkey, on 03/12/2009, -4/+78"...if you swap out the inline-control bundled earphones for your own, you reach Apple Zen: an iPod with zero buttons." -Cyklo
Now that's funny, I don't care who you are. - Hobbes24, on 03/12/2009, -2/+48............................................________

- digiguy, on 03/11/2009, -19/+63Then don't buy it. There are other iPod models to choose from
- peaceninja, on 03/12/2009, -4/+31stop jumping to conclusions. perhaps apple is providing any replacement proprietary headphones free of cost, forever.
haha just kidding. apple really sucks. - piesforyou, on 03/12/2009, -4/+31You speak as if ipods are the only option. Try "there are many, many other mp3 players to choose from which are much cheaper and, in the case of the shuffle, more functional (can easily get the same size mp3 player with a screen for that money)"
- ArthurSucks, on 03/12/2009, -5/+30Good news! Other manufactures make mp3 players too!
- long, on 03/12/2009, -1/+25you do realize that there's no play/pause button on the shuffle itself... right?
- FireStrife, on 03/12/2009, -3/+25Yea but its more unnecessary cost. I cant buy a music player to use with my awesome headphones without buying more things to make it work.
- michaelphw, on 03/12/2009, -3/+20I think you'll find that Apple Introduces Proprietary Headphones, not iPod.
- diotro, on 03/12/2009, -3/+19Thank you for pointing this out, seriously.
- WBWB, on 03/12/2009, -1/+15Yes they think it's acceptable. This is from the same company that designed a thin laptop with no room for more than one USB port and put it behind a flip-down door that doesn't allow enough room for some USB plugs to fit, depending on the size of the molded plastic around the plug. Maybe they should have done what they usually do: introduce yet another miniaturized port. They could have added multiple mini-USB or micro-USB ports, but since those are standardized connectors, they would have created a proprietary connector instead. Like their new mini-displayport to dual-DVI adapter, their USB converter dongle could cost $100 and not even work correctly on non-Apple devices!
If you buy Apple products then you are enabling this kind of form-over-function design mentality. - shedtroll, on 03/12/2009, -6/+19Oh ***** you apple...
***** you... - long, on 03/12/2009, -8/+20apple finally created a product with a 100% apple tax.
- robinthehood, on 03/12/2009, -4/+16itunes enabled is a benefit? WTF? itunes is the most ***** piece of software ever invented. It basically locks your mp3 player down. Then there's the fact that I can't download ***** quicktime anymore without that POS music software.
You want an ipod? Get Songbird. DL your songs elsewhere. - Psybient, on 03/12/2009, -0/+11What slack? The vast majority of comments here ARE ripping Apple a new one. Did you read any?
- vega27, on 03/12/2009, -3/+14no you must take this step a little further...
the next shuffle will be just headphones with wifi. Your Itunes music will be available in Apples cloud, and anywhere you have wifi, you have access to your Itunes Music Streamed from Apples Cloud network. All for a handy dandy price of 9.99 a month ! - JustAn0th3rFace, on 03/12/2009, -1/+12oh sweet.. hey can you point out where the buttons are on the unit once again?
- FriedTurkey, on 03/12/2009, -4/+14Come on. If Sony did this Digg would rip it a new one. Why does Apple get so much slack?
- Wandel, on 03/12/2009, -0/+9It's not a non-issue when a company starts charing for buttons.
- MaxD, on 03/12/2009, -0/+8@hobbes Wow, and I was starting to believe that there wasn't an appropriate time to use that picture.
- jmbillings, on 03/12/2009, -0/+8My mission in life is, by the time I die, to be the only person in the world to not own an iPod.
- MacParrot, on 03/12/2009, -2/+9And they have FM radios built-in! Imagine that! I hear FM radio is the next big thing.
- phoomp, on 03/12/2009, -0/+7Apple iHeadphone adapter: $30?
- klowngoblin, on 03/12/2009, -3/+10other ipods to choose from? ***** ipods, again, over priced, featureless, and terrible soud quality for the PRICE.
for $80 you can get a Sandisk Sansa clip thats 4-8GB
for under $100 you can get a Creative Zen 4-8 and a little over $100 is 16 and 32GB
personally for under $200 i would get a Cowon player as they are one of the highest quality for sound. - mjr4189, on 03/12/2009, -1/+7this is so much fail. i am sick of propriatary *****. i they start doing this large scale with all ipod i am switching to the zune.
- TheMu, on 03/12/2009, -0/+6My guess: the new iPod will come with proprietary air, which you need to pay an Apple licensing fee to breathe.
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -4/+10you know, this is the same thing sony did with a line of their cd players about 8 years ago. it was a great success.
no controls besides the ones on the cord.
I used to have one, and it was awesome. eventually they put little push buttons on the edges because people wanted more powerful headphones.
If apple does a bunch of amazing headphones, they can pull it off. - JoeyDeacon, on 03/12/2009, -3/+9Lol who really gives a toss. If you insist on wearing a full body glove headset for optimum frequency bias then I doubt you'll be buying a shuffle. Its a throwaway device. Fine for the demographic that will buy it.
- ozid, on 03/12/2009, -3/+8these headphones have been out for a while. they introduced the ipod that NEEDS them.
- phoomp, on 03/12/2009, -1/+6And probably increase the price of the Shuffle by 50%.
- MicrosoftBob, on 03/12/2009, -0/+5It would be nice if the page had A PICTURE OF THE HEADPHONES that are the main subject of the article.
I know there's an apple link, but still. - MightyUpsetter, on 03/12/2009, -1/+6What kind of moron uses top of the range headphones on an ipod shuffle anyway?
- FriedTurkey, on 03/12/2009, -0/+5Problem is that headphones break. The shuffle buyer is probably very price conscience so buying a replacement pair of headphones for $35 is not as appealing as the $5 pair.
- MightyUpsetter, on 03/12/2009, -4/+8Why were you considering the new one, if the one you have works anyway?
- Wandel, on 03/12/2009, -0/+4Stupid spelling. I meant charging, obviously.
- ShyGuy91284, on 03/12/2009, -0/+4The iPod has quite good audio quality too if you hook up a decent pair of headphones (Like Grado sr80's)
- redstorm986, on 03/12/2009, -1/+5That's probably what apple is doing. When I used to work for this awful company the shuffle was basically bait. The second you tell people it has no screen they spend almost three times as much without thinking about it.
- turpialito, on 03/12/2009, -0/+4You'd think they learned the lesson from the old mid 90s Amelio days. NuBus and ADB should have taught them a lasting lesson, but no. They'd rather go the Sony way yet again. Looks like another attempt for market domination that's gonna end up disastrously.
- sapo916, on 03/12/2009, -1/+5True, I like to buy months worth at the apple store and then just toss the ones that go empty on me. Straight throwaway devices.
- epiccollision, on 03/12/2009, -0/+4yes
- javaroast, on 03/12/2009, -0/+4Great we'll stop talking about anything Apple unless it meets your approval. Let's see how this works now... Apple product releases get a lot of interest here at digg. So Apple releases a new product, story gets dug up and then people discuss it. Kind of how digg works. In this case it's a legitimate criticism. But you are right we should all just stop discussing popular tech products from Apple in the Apple section. If you could be so kind and post, "If you like it buy it and if you don't like it don't buy it." as the first post on all Apple articles from here on out we'd really appreciate it.
- whiteguysamurai, on 03/12/2009, -9/+12No thanks.
There are better players on the market. - inactive, on 03/12/2009, -0/+3kreatre2007 ,
It is wonderful to see a fellow poster with sound reasoning and intelligence. - Claude1971, on 03/12/2009, -0/+3I don't have the 1st gen Zune ya twit-and oh yeah, they all work again anyway
- mjr4189, on 03/12/2009, -0/+3Alright, lol. That was totally not the intent of my post. I should have elaborated more on the fact that its a ***** design. read my reply to kreatre2007, the way you ahve to go about changing the song annoys me too.
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -0/+3Yeah, I don't know. When you don't have to look at things, the interface is less obtrusive.
But when you look at the last generation, it had no way of seeing the track name/artist.
I think it's an upgrade. - inactive, on 03/12/2009, -5/+8Didn't they see this coming? I mean...seriously? Buttons soldered in the headphone cord only?
They think it's actually acceptable for product design that the headphones are NOT interchangeable with other ones, without compromising all the shuffle's interface?
No worries, I bet Belkin will sell an adapter for about $60... /sarcasm - rvn15, on 03/12/2009, -1/+4As a runner I love the 2nd gen shuffle, clip it to my shorts and run. I use my favorite headphones because there was no way i was running with the apple headphones. Dealing with controls on the headphones, i don't have time for that. That is the reason i bought the shuffle, to play music while I run. That is it. I don't need to have a computer voice telling me the song, I know the song, I put it on there to motivate me during the run.

What is Digg?
