- 36linescreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+38you can do that through the settings/main menu command set
- amandaw33, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40How is this different than the current music --> podcasts menu system?
I was hoping they were going to put podcasts in the root instead of under music but it doesn't appear so in the picture? - MegaSilver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28I already have "Podcasts" in the root menu of my iPod Nano. You can change your root menu settings
- jmzook, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Why does this need a patent? How is this a new method for doing anything? Our patent system is *****.
- Dihuko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20"iPodcasts?" Come on Apple, you can do better!
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18It needs a patent because if Apple don't patent it, someone else will and sue Apple.
Yes, the patent system is *****. - Cybie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Suddenly Leo Laporte's idea of calling them "netcasts" doesn't sound so bad.
- farazyashar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think I might bash the crap out of my iPod if I see any extra vowels in the coming months.
- Greyarea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"I guess since no one else is allowed to use the word "Podcasts""
Actually Apple have publicly stated that they have no objections to people using the word 'podcast'. - amandaw33, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Never messed around with that, just did it. Thanks for the heads up. Still don't get the patent thing though? Anything to do with them using the word iPodcasts?
- RidesAPaleHorse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Sorry, but a hierarchical menu is not worthy of a patent. This is no different that the system they use to manage the music or videos on both the iPod and Zune. The only thing different is that it is not in the Music or Videos section of the menu.
If Microsoft wants to implement this on the Zune, all they have to do is challenge the patent.
/Not a Microsoft fanboy
//Nor an Apple fanboy
///Do love my iPod, though! - sotarts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thats two minutes of my day I'll never get back..
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2> Our patent system is *****.
No, our legal system is. Companies feel the need to patent the obvious because otherwise a competitor can go after them for it. Note the whole Creative/Apple hierarchical menu debacle. That kind of thing shouldn't be allowed. The patent office has nothing to do with that. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4http://duggmirror.com/apple/iPod_Getting_Podcasts_Menu/
Also, what the hell is a "iPodcast"? - colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"It needs a patent because if Apple don't patent it, someone else will and sue Apple. "
Prior art would make Apple exempt. - steal_apps01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah i was gonna say, my 4gen ipod has had a podcast menu since the firmware update around itunes 5 or 6. It works, but i still use smart playlists, they rule.
- Avalontor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So since the patents for iPhone were filed today, does that mean a company like "The Internet Phone Company" which uses iPhone throughout their site, must change their brand name. Or am I confused between trademarks and patents and ???
- smeager, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1See thats what a person with common sense would think but this is not the case with patents. I agree that a hierarchial manu is not worth a patent but try to explain that to Creative with its Zen patent. This all started becuase of that.
- Rudrasksha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*sure
- OpCzar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Inaccurate title, you can already have a podcast menu in your root...
- abxy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is such a load of *****. So now developers can't put the label "podcasts" on the menus of portable mediea players? ...wait, in fact, developers can't even make podcasts browsable now in their media player menus without paying Apple now. I don't know why all of you idiots are praising Apple for this move; it unfairly cripples any other portable media player coming from different developers for good.
Apple isn't paying you to praise them; quit commending them for doing stuff like this. - njfinn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ummm these idiots can't patent the obvious. A menu, ***** why not patent the alphabet.
- mirunit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Watch out for Microsoft and the impending Unecast. Im shure that that will be patent 20060265638.
- diggeasytiger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is totally newsworthy.
- crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It doesn't seem like a different menu hierarchy as much as it just shows more information about each podcast now - date, description, etc.
- Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope Apple aren't dicks like they were with the search function and the 5G iPods, and they let this new function (if it actually happens) work on the older iPods. Just buy an accessory that allows to you to connect to a network. Assuming that's how they would do it.
- turbodigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But the one thing that I like is that the date the podcast was released is shown, I don't believe the ipod does that now..
- tonyr1988, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@SilentSpyder
The problem is that Creative (and I'm sure other DAPs) already have that. On my Zen Vision:M, I have a root "folder" called Zencasts that holds all of my audio and video "podcasts" ("netcasts", "Zencasts", whatever) automatically.
Prior art? - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think they've released any. I doubt they will.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the overall interface needs quite a bit of work. being able to customize it more would be a great feature. being able to customize the Now Playing screen to show whatever tag info you want.... such as the song's rating so you can just glance at the screen to see what it is. also the year, etc.
- abstraxion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Haha, "innovate".
Apple adds a MENU to its UI, and it's front page news? No fanboys here, no sir. - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1tonyr1988:
Creative and Apple now have a patent licensing agreement... - SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maybe it's just a root 'Podcasts' that auto-detects video and audio podcasts. Something that simple would be nice.
- CanadianAviator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oh yeah? How shure are you?
- JeffDM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What you are seeing is the result of poor oversight of the USPTO, along with shoddy legislation that tried to fix it, but backfired.
- xxMarka, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2the iPod has had this feature for a while.
whoever posted this story just failed to realize that Apple is simplyusing this patent to keep Microsoft from using this on the Zune. - zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Like Tivo.. they didn't patent anything and look at what happens to them.
If I were them I'll do 30sec skip, Tivo, DVR, PVR and HDD Recorder and Digital Media recorder at same time. - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1These kinds of user interface details are very patentable. That's not Apple's fault. All software companies have to file these kinds of UI patents now, just to protect themselves. And what it boils down to is that other companies can't make a carbon copy of the UI. It doesn't mean that other mp3 players can't have a podcast menu (Apple has not tried to trademark the term 'podcast' or tried to prevent other people from using it)
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Will the idea in this patent be free for anyone to use?
I'm a Linux geek and Apple curious... what patents has apple released for free (gratis or libre) to the general public? - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Good. I'm glad Apple is continuing to innovate in this area. I'm listening to more and more podcasts these days.
- maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1iTunes needs a more customizable interference for listing podcasts as well. The current system is really annoying to work with when you are subsribed to many feeds.
- lizardbrain, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2prefer "Zunecast" - http://FeedYourZune.com
- JC4P, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5The patent is probably for the word iPodcasts.
- blapierre, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3I guess since no one else is allowed to use the word "Podcasts" I would be ok making the exact same menu but with a different name since this only protects "Podcasts" menus?
