- JamesBondJr, on 01/08/2009, -1/+13A premium digital Canon DSLR with GPS and geotagging built in, I'd totally spring for that
- ncapone, on 01/09/2009, -0/+11iPhoto? For PC? Get outta here.
- serif69, on 01/09/2009, -1/+10And so it begins...
- captaink, on 01/09/2009, -0/+9I think people are missing the point -- whether the geo-coding information is on the photo is beside the point (more and more cameras will have in the future no doubt).
The real point about what iPhoto '09 provides is a seamless way to view your photos by 'Places'. And a very simple user-interface that ensures that photos that don't have geo-coding metadata can have it tagged by searching the map or their in-built database.
As usual -- Apple takes something that is hard -- and makes it trivial and useful to consumers. Thats the real wonder of iPhoto '09. You can see the video here:

- ilgaz, on 01/09/2009, -0/+8Almost all Nokia phones which have GPS built in (or BT GPS) does record the position data with the pictures taken. You may need to download some stuff from Nokia beta labs if you have a business oriented phone such as E series and added GPS with bluetooth device.
If CNN doesn't know this fact, Nokia should fire entire PR arm of Nokia USA. I don't blame CNN, I blame Nokia. - PolkStreet, on 01/09/2009, -0/+5Both top name cameras and both deserve respect.
- vrikis, on 01/09/2009, -1/+5Can't wait for iLife '09. Already downloading iWork '09 :p
- rpark, on 01/09/2009, -0/+4I don't know, it just works!
.. in all seriousness, the iPhone automatically tags all photos with GPS data. - jcaino, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3You can also enable geotagging on the BlackBerry storm. Surprised that Verizon didn't completely cripple the GPS this time.
- wassy121, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3So, the thing I wonder is this. The iPhone can tell at what angle up or down you took the photo (the pitch), and it can also tell you the location on the map within 10m or so (lat/long), right? Why can't it tell you the yaw? You know, 20 degrees North NorthEast, or whatever. Wouldn't that make the picture much more interesting to data-mine? You could probably do a lot of fun things with enough data.
- inactive, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3most nokias, sony ericssons, HTC and the blackberry storm (unsure about the other models) that have gps/a-gps do this too, its a cool feature to have
- Netmindstorm, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3Using garmin tracks or similar device that can output nmea sentences there are many programs that can geo tag your data (robogeo, geosetter). The "hardest" part is synchronizing the gps device time to the camera time.
- kinseyincanada, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3how do you even use the geotagging on an iPhone anyway?
- ilgaz, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2It should have some kind of preference to record positioning data with photos. Normally manufacturers turn it off because of privacy risks.
- Typhoon2009, on 01/09/2009, -3/+5Replace Canon with Nikon
- ilgaz, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2You don't need a "premium" device. Lots of cameras and even camera phones with GPS from Nokia does record GPS data with photos.
- habbofresh, on 01/09/2009, -1/+3LOOK! I'M A NERD! THAT'S WHY I MAKE COMPARATIVE STATEMENTS USING THE GREATER THAN SYMBOL!!!!!!
I'M L33T AND INDISPUTABLE BECAUSE OF THAT! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - cdneng2, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1PicasaWeb has face recognition. It's a really cool function.
- cjwl, on 01/09/2009, -1/+2Developers using the official iPhone SDK can not get or set geotagging info for images in the photo library. fail.
- CraigStanton, on 01/09/2009, -1/+2I'm happy with a separate GPS logging device and syncing it with the photos later using GPSPhotoLinker. Since there is a good standard for how this data is to be stored in images, if Apple is doing something different I'd be livid.
- yabos, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Which the new iPhoto integrates with out of the box. There's an iPhoto and Aperture plugin called Flickr Exporter that does this as well by letting you upload your pictures to Flickr, but my guess is this plugin will probably be going away soon now that iPhoto does it. Aperture will probably gain some of the new iPhoto features as well especially the face recognition.
- SniperGX1, on 01/09/2009, -1/+2What does Picasa have to do with iPhoto?
- coldfusion1970, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Like all 'location aware' applications on the iPhone, it will ask you twice and then always stay on (unless you turn it off again in the system preferences).
- sobri, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1It's never asked me. Other apps do, but not the camera app. *shrug*
- sockpuppets, on 01/10/2009, -1/+1Replace Nikon with Snozzberry.
- joshzam, on 01/09/2009, -1/+1I'm surprised they didn't mention Flickr's geo-tagging abilities. It does it very well and has been doing it for years.
- HolyChimp, on 01/09/2009, -3/+2It asks you every damn time you start the camera app up. Some kind of always on option would be nice.
- TheCheeks, on 01/09/2009, -2/+1Yay!
- graemee, on 01/09/2009, -4/+2Picasa 3 does geotagging and even integrates with Google Earth to provide KML files for your web albums.
I'm more interested in the face recognition. I hope Picasa 4 has it. - gametavern, on 01/09/2009, -10/+1Now make one for the PC
- PunkHop, on 01/09/2009, -12/+1Picasa > iPhoto. True story.
