- javester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Javester here of iPhoto Geotagging infamy :)
Some folks are wondering why Google Maps points to a location offshore...
Well, I think its because of a disconnect between Google Maps and Google Earth.
I used Google Earth for the Mac to get the coordinates, and then handcoded in the GPS info using ExifTools. For some reason, the Google Earth coords point to a location offshore in Google Maps.
I used Google Earth because it allows you to easily get the GPS coords, unlike Google Maps which requires some URL surgery.
Maybe, that's one reason why Apple and Google decided that this feature is not ready for primetime. - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, I beleive (if I read yesterday's article correctly) that he entered his own coordinates in, he didn't use a gps device. I'd say it's pretty damn close considering.
- Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Probably because the iPhone doesn't seem to actually exist yet.
- splatnik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3flickr supports geotagging as well, and damn it's awesome
- slant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is there a way to MODIFY the EXIF data if one's camera is not cool enough to have GPS built into it?
- greenhornet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about a mirror on that how to? Looks like the server is getting hammered.
- matija, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4works really well.. that tower is in the middle of the SEA!....
- aquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What kind of camera has a built in GPS system? This is the first I've heard of it.
Or am I missing the point completely, and you actually hand-enter in the coordinates? - javester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's the utility I used.

Just be sure to enter the following GPS tags - GPSLatitudeRef, GPSLatitude, GPSLongitudeRef, GPSLongitude, GPSAltitudeRef, GPSAltitude, GPSTimeStamp and GPSDateStamp - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok the real reason why:
"Well, that's not my fault and I think its because of a disconnect between Google Maps and Google Earth.
I used Google Earth for the Mac to get the coordinates, and then handcoded in the GPS info using ExifTools." - slant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Heh, actually. That lady is swimming, and the grass? Just a backdrop. I know it looks real, but she really is in the middle of the sea. Not to mention the tower... yep, a buoy. They just decorated it to look like a tower. See? It works!
- bender123, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2So why hasn't anyone else brought up iPhone capabilities. The first one is rumored to have a 3MP camera and knowing that most phones have GPS capabilities now Jobs could unlock that to work with iPhoto. Total integration.
- javester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just an update.
Just wanted to let ya'll know that it wasn't a disconnect between Google Maps & Earth as I initially suspected nor was it a bug in iPhoto, but rather, how the GPS data was entered using ExifTools. My bad.
Many thanks to Craig Stantion of GeoTagger fame for spotting that.
Also, a new InfoPanel.nib file is now available (again, thanks to Craig) that doesn't break keywords.
Don't you just love how people from all over the world can come together to do this? - rtini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cameras don't really have GPS yet. For this demo video the guy just entered in some wacky coordinates manually.
It would be cool if iPhoto provided the ability to populate GPS coordinates based on location, since digital cameras aren't going to have GPS built-in anytime soon. The digital cameras built into cell phones are garbage. - priussegger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hey, that's Cape May!!! It is strange why its in the middle of the sea...
- nyuser98, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0One I use,
http://www.hugsan.com/EXIFutils/html/features.html - tep200377, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0wow, a person has geotagget a photo out in the sea .. what a tremendous discovery !
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+0.... it's not hidden. what's the big fuss about?
