- Soulhuntre, on 10/10/2007, -6/+35Apparently Copy / Paste is still to complicated for Apple to figure out?
- drewpost, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21The carrier menu is a common feature on all GSM phones (excluding the ones locked down by Cingular/New ATT (old ATT GSM phones had this) It allows for the manual selection of what network your phone is on when you are roaming internationally. This allows for the selection of a "preferred" roaming partner or another network if the preferred one is not available in your location. Often Euro-providers will charge a lower rate if you use one of their preferred networks when roaming abroad. So, in response to your questions, sadly nothing to see here :-(
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -8/+24What about MMS? Searchable contacts? Video recorder? Ability to send text to multiple recipients?
- Nowheredan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16How about linking to the original source of this information, Engadget, where they can spell?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14When will people learn the difference between their, there and they're? Will someone please think of the children?
Bury this, nobody likes a spelling Nazi. - gizzymo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11can you sync the iphone with itunes and refuse firmware upgrades???
- StephenCIreland, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11provided the update doesnt undo my hardware unlock, defeat jailbreak and take away my NES emulator then ill do it : keyboard languages, home screen audio control, TV Out (yes its there !!! but probably locked to the chipped cables like the nano) , iTunes music store and all the other features im getting , ill do the update , also hoefully the radio headset and some other bits work now !
- samgab, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I'm using an unlocked iPhone in New Zealand, and it's always had that "Carrier" menu. It's not something new to the new firmware. It must just appear when not using AT&T.
When I go into that menu, there are only two choices: Auto, and Vodafone NZ. - batmant, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Also see the Touch's manual shows the "." Shortcut popular on the Blackberry's. That's probably coming too so I guess 9 features and counting.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11To the submitter:
The first word of your submission is ENGADGET so why don't you link to Engadget? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I guess spelling the word 'too' correctly is too complicated for you.
- StephenCIreland, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6ehhh the current iphone versions have a carrier menu...
- SabersKunk, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9'their photos'
- celeronxl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Why are they right-aligning the iTunes icon? That looks terrible.
Original pictures of the iPhone lacking the YouTube icon demonstrated left-alignment. Why the change? - joeycerone, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Double tap home button for favorite contacts. sweet!
- 1town, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6iTunes doesn't force iPhone updates, jackass
- Durrok, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The main reason they didn't use 3G was due to power issues. It would have significantly cut down the battery life and since they want you to use it as both an mp3 player and a phone it lasting you through an 8 hour day is pretty important.
- qpdb, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5You can turn on multiple keyboards? Looks like that... now I can stop writing Spanglish. I wonder how this will affect the spell checker.
- xero9, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5But then how would batmant get traffic to his blog? Pleeease think of the countless number of nobody's on the internets people!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Did you not see "new calculator icon"?
- emt1451, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3wrong
http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/popUp_3g.html - batmant, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I would like to see stability added to Safari. Anyone else get a minimum two crashes a day?
- go5go, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Version one needs some improvements.. Lots of things would be useful..
A quick fix to the sms/mms thing would actually be on the carrier side. When I receive an MMS photo it tells me to go to some website and put in all this crap. Make it so I can just tap it to open safari and have the login and password inputted for me.. That would be the easiest quick fix.
To send, you can always email directly to your friends phone using their carrier's mms email. Not a huge deal.
Multiple SMS can be sent, but you have to type in the numbers manually.
An Email Accounts "Home" Button to go back to the main account selection screen.. That is my biggest pain for switching between email account views. - FinnishFries, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I don't see how the "Carrier" menu is new. At least here in Europe (and I'm guessing it's the same anywhere else), with an unlocked iPhone running 1.0.2 (an bought of course in the US of A) I am able to see the "Carrier" menu. All it does is give you the ability to change the carrier manually (automatiaclly scans for all available networks).
- lifeinanalog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3and there goes the 3rd party application support.
- Schelske, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I had that, but it solved with a software restore and reboot.
- ohsnapitsbrown, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"Network setup with VPN support"
It already has this.. I hope that this means it's being updated. I (along with many, many other people) have been waiting for Cisco VPN support. Anyone know? - Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Quite a few of them, since that's pretty standard these days... :-/
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2So don't update until the hacks are re-released. With 1.0.2 it took maybe two hours, and only required adding about two lines into the shell script that downloaded the updater file. Of course this will be making considerably more substantial changes, but that doesn't mean it'll take the guys months to figure it out.
/was sitting in installer.app's IRC channel when it happened, and was probably the fifth person globally to hack a 1.0.2 phone - giddytonk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I sure wish Notes would sync...or maybe I don't know how? I have some great notes on my iPhone, but I don't have a way to email, sync, or print the notes. Seems like it would not be too hard to sync to Stickies or simple text files on a PC/Mac.
- aaronm67, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2When you paid $400 for it.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's still not "very few places". They're probably covering 20% of the US population.
So answer to "where would you use it" for 20% of the US population: "right where I am", which is pretty useful. - timusca, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wrong? Look at how large the US is. That list isn't much... the vast majority of the US population don't live in those places...
- SirZRX, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4dude its about time, when i read TV out i wet my pants, thats the most ***** thing amazing ever, i got my iphone 2 days ago and im the only one in my city in mexico that has one =)
- mateo60, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2More importantly for me, from that article I just learned that I can double tap the space and get a period with a space on my Blackberry. I did NOT know that and I'm nerdily exited now.
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Or maybe I'll get to view the lyrics on all the music I added them to (which thanks to an old widget that I think has since been broken, was quite a lot)
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Look at it on their coverage map. There's a reason they don't let you see 3G coverage until you're at city-level zoom.
- rblinne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1One recent change to the AT&T contract is sending SMS to multiple recipients will count as multiple messages.
- rogerbly, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4yes, so far
- batmant, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1A link to their photo gallery has been there from the start. And while they were the source of the photos, they didn't do any sort of analysis concerning the update.
- batmant, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Interesting. i also had multiple people contact me saying that in some jurisdictions in Europe, phones cannot be sold locked. I'm wondering if I could import one of those phones and use it in America on T-Mobile right out of the box.
- beerbarron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I am so happy to hear they will be including video out. I wonder if they will ever include flash or something
- johnhummel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Closed captioning - now, *that* is interesting. It leads to the possibility of making videos with subtitles - perfect for the anime fans out there. Or even a music video with "follow along text" if you want.
- rblinne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Or LEAP support. Then I could use WI-FI at work.
- GhostFreeman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This might seem silly, but Semacode support would be nice.
- thesutex, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1carrier menu doesnt mean anything.. just that you can select which operator to roam on when abroad.. nothing more.. its still locked down.. this is a feature on every locked down phone from any manufacturer..
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2The excuse they gave was power issues. The actual reason isn't as clear.
There are plenty of 3G phones that can make it through the day without going dead. - fascfoo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2And how many of them have Wi-fi, a big ass 3.5 in display, 8 gigs of storage and plays videos, and mp3, and were specifically designed to be a media unit?
Well? - drewpost, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"In my experience, the choice of carrier while roaming internationally with an AT&T/Cingular/AT&T phone has had nothing to do with rates and everything to do with coverage and availability of data communications (GPRS/EDGE). Choose the wrong carrier, and you can't use the web or e-mail. AT&T has a toll-free number for obtaining assistance in determining which carriers offer data."
Yea- With American carriers travelling abroad this is true, however with Euro carriers it's a BIG deal with what you pay (trust me, I have the £147 bill from roaming in France to prove it... The cell phone industry is VERY different over here. I was used to my Cingular roaming where it didn't matter what network I was on! - 12340987, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1no a2dp?
