- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3199 bucks is a huge unlock price, I think that they believe they will be taken down/sued any day so they hope to make profit fast
- holdencaulfield, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24You'd think there would be enough people at Engadget standing around and one would say "hey, I'll hold that camera for you so you don't have to jerk the damn thing all around."
- sekou, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20From www.wirelessimports.com's disclaimer (the sole US reseller for the app): "In the event Apple comes out with a new firmware upgrade which will lock your phone again you hereby agree that Wireless Imports nor its vendor will be held liable or responcible for unlocking your handset again. If your handset becomes locked you will be charged to unlock it again. " Awesome. You take Amex, right?
- DrStephanHeimer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Sell more iphones! AT&T's the only one losing out here.
- KillTheRhythm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11It's already been said that it doesn't.
- JeremyBanks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8They built upon the work of many hackers who did, and are now gouging the customer for it.
- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6There are people that will crack a game in a matter of hours; how long will it take for people to figure out what this software does, code another app that does it, and release it to the wild? I think that is what he was trying to ask/say.
- knightwolf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6exactly what I was thinking.
- Me1000, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7How is that ironic?
- fascfoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Updates are through itunes.
- RTourn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4maybe, but "addressing" cell phone unlocking is illegal. According to the DMCA I have a explicit Right to unlock MY phone.
- Duncan3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4$99 gets you something that won't work after the next software update, and will be FREE in a week once it's reverse engineered.
Just how profoundly dumb do you have to be pay for that? - Vektuz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5How come it costs money to unlock? Someone explain to me? Surely the pirates/hackers get ahold of it just as easily? You'd think something like what is essentially a software hack would be almost impossible to keep 'secret' for long.
- pradaaddict, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4This is probably the biggest reason why Apple and Rogers haven't inked a deal. The data plans that Apple would force Rogers to go with would put an end to their monopolistic price gouging.
- sloppychris, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Are you comparing an independent review to advertising? Is consumer reports also "advertising"?
- havic632, on 10/10/2007, -7/+10the most ironic part is i can watch the unlocking of the iphone on my iphone
- adamrgolf, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4this: http://allstarz.hollywood.com/~seanconnery/zardoz13.jpg
- topherfitz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah the Dell Ultra Sharp displays are awesome. I have the exact same one he has, its the 24" Dell Ultra Sharp.
- apb1991, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8Engadget is also giving away the app in a contest.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Apple wanted share of the revenues. AT&T was the only one willing to.
- Noobist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3There's lots of apps you can use to activate the phone, such as iAsign. Then you don't have to be locked into AT&Ts contract :D
I'm in Australia, I think I'll be importing one now :) - dawgma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3But wait... don't you have to be on AT&T's network to get the update? How would the next update affect an unlocked iPhone using another carrier?
- onestep, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3get a freakin' tripod already. No tripods hanging around the engadget offices...?
- yeahright, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Well then, good luck with your $210+/month data plan with Rogers (which includes 500MB), because that's at least how much it will cost you if you use their GSM network on a semi-regular basis
- sloppychris, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I'm guessing there's a "neither wireless imports nor its vendor" in there?
- Speed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Last I checked, none of the cell phone companies in Canada have unlimited Data plans.
- driftwood07, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2someone please clarify, in order to buy an iPhone, didnt you have to create a new 2-year contract with AT&T or something like this. If so , what is the big deal with unlocking the service to other carriers if you are already paying for AT&T ?
- locojones, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That's the funniest part about this. All these nerds pissed and moaned about being overcharged 200 dollars for the device, yet they'll run out and pay 100 bucks for an unlock and pay a 200 dollar ETF to take their phone elsewhere.
- PiMPSP, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Soooo..whats stopping at&t from purchasing a few of these under a fake reseller name and then using the application and sniffing out where it actually connects to then implementing a block on the IP address for the connection?
- ledguitar, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Not only is your question stupid, but it should say "What's an iphone?"
- sloppychris, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Unless you blindly spend $100 bucks on a service that doesn't actually work, but you didn't know about it because there wasn't any independent confirmation. Then you're just down $100 with nothing to show for it.
- catalysis, on 10/10/2007, -6/+8and to think, most companies have to pay for advertising.
- Noobist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Everyone knew there would be a software unlock
- Speed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You're right, we should pay, just like when unlocking Motorola, Samsung or LG phones, oh wait.... Actually Rogers will do that for me...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Pretty cool. Too bad he didn't think to just use a tripod that could be easily tilted but the video could of been worse. Here's hoping that a free unlock method will be developed and released as open source...
- thurows, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Totally different radio technology, you need a hardware and software hack.
- Webler707, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Simple, I know a guy that works at Sprint, Apple did go their first. But Apple wanted rights to the Sprint network and of course Sprints response was "Um... its our network you will go by our rules." Verizon did the same thing. At@t was a last resort.
- redfan, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6Not quite sure that the HD video was necessary, but it looks like a go. Wonder if Apple will shut it down.
- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Another $100 isnt that big of a deal if it means keeping your current contract; the cancelation fee is going to cost you more.
- aDJsavedmylife, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yours.
- binorgog, on 08/07/2008, -1/+2Apple is behind this because they hate AT&T and they just dropped their pants by 200.00.
/sarcasm but possible! - Vektuz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Most of the hardware hackers do it for free, collaborate, etc. Look at the whole AACS hacker initiative, those guys put in serious time working on it, colloborating etc. This would be like a company coming in and selling the stuff they make, once they finally manage to get around it. It makes no sense to me. Just saying.
- noiles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1because Apple has never been known for price gouging....
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1or profoundly rich.
- aDJsavedmylife, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, that's not true.
Apple gets a commission for every AT&T contract that's signed. - poracious, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1So you'd lose being able to do visual voicemail with only other iPhone-on-AT&T users...
... And gain the ability to use the entire rest of your iPhone on any carrier you want to with any plan you want to? Not a bad deal, imo. - dawgma, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I have this display as well and it is great. There's nothing to complain about it.. and you can hook up so many inputs to the damn thing too. Along with my desktop, I've also got my TV, and X360 hooked up to it.
- Noobist, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1This unlock relies on back-end services so it might not be that simple... However I'm sure there will eventually be a free version
- poracious, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Yet you apparantly have to have it already activated to be able to use iPhoneSIMfree. Thus, you'd have an active AT&T account.
(though you could admittedly use the faux activator they used afterwards to activate the T-Mobile SIM in the first place) - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1It would be more ironic if you watched the unlock on your iphone, and then unlocked your iphone from your iphone.
