iPhone hacked to work outside US with Vodafone contract
tuaw.com — Guy bought US iPhone, removed AT&T SIM, put it in old cell phone, took it to Vodafone store and added it to his contract (replacing phone currently on the contract & using the AT&T SIM). He then took it home, popped the SIM, put it back in iPhone, used iASign to activate. Results: UK Phone number, Vodafone contract. May possibly work in any country

- garryw, on 10/11/2007, -30/+13Digg should change is name to iDigg, this is getting silly. Half the stories are about the iPhone.
- Z_Man, on 10/11/2007, -10/+4that makes no sense at all, buddy
- KennMac, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2There's been like 2-3 this week. You're a little late becoming a sheep.
- robwilkens, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Take another look, I count at least 2-3 today
- logicalnoise, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4you realize that putting "iphone" into the search bar and hitting Enter doesn't bring up todays top stories...right?
- grr74, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1In your profile you can choose to ignore stories about Apple. Your problem solved.
- greenrider, on 10/11/2007, -14/+160Apple makes a phone now?
- plaztikrhino, on 10/11/2007, -15/+1for some reason this made me chuckle.
- awhiteflame, on 10/11/2007, -16/+2It's Ron Paul compatible, don't worry.
- jtb4, on 10/11/2007, -17/+2Why is Ru Paul running for President when he/she already has a job promoting the iPhone?
- BESTenemy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2iPaul comes with with a 4 year contract.
- robojerk, on 10/11/2007, -13/+2I doubt this. SIM card's aren't able to cross networks like that.
- dictatortot, on 10/11/2007, -20/+10wait.. what's outside the US?

- gruvsf, on 10/11/2007, -16/+4wow-what a hack! NOT! This barely qualifies as a story. Dugg down
- logicalnoise, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9except that up until now people have only been able to use iphone's on a AT&T network.
- tiwest, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3Sounds like ***** to me! What he did just doesn't make sense and shouldn't have worked.
- poorbusker, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17If you read the whole thing more cell phone savvy readers called ***** (correctly) on his story for various reasons.

http://iphone.corank.com/tech/story/how-an-Apple-Fan-Hacked-the-iphone-int- LeonardNimrod, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1How about just using an invalid SSN or or if you have bad credit use yours. That hack does nothing but limit functionality while making you pay for the same Go plans.
- l0ne, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5From author from TUAW comments:
"Update needed I feel. What I did was ask them to change my USIM number on my contract to that of the AT&T prepaid card (must be a new one with 20 digits).
The iPhone seems to check and confim that it is indeed an AT&T sim (no idea how, i guess thats what the hackers are working on), but the network picks up that sims USIM number (not phone number) as my vodafone contract.
Not perfect without Visual Voicemail, but it works just fine." - kolais, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9Inacurate: there is no way to provision other carrer's SIM on HLR. Besides other possible restrictions you'd need to know Ki which is not officially "readable" from the SIM.

Dont try to knock an iPhone story. It makes SJ's cum sour, making it harder to lap up.- kolais, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2:) fine. just didn't want people to start spending money on AT&T P&G SIMs for no reason.
- chazuk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Oops! You got me wrong there, which is easy with my poorly written comment.
I was commenting on the fact that people were digging you down, even tho you have a valid point! (You were on minus 2 before)
Good to se sense came through over blind fanboyism and you're on a + digg count now! ;)

- Adthrawn1138, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1They talked about this on TWiT. You need to be in the US once every two months I think. Not 100% sure, but it won't last forever. I can guarantee that.
- *Ica*, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3No that's a different issue. That is if you leave the AT&T SIM card in the phone and take it abroad and roam. If the phone remains overseas it will cease working after 2 months.
- Giga, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0"Not 100% sure, but it won't last forever. I can guarantee that."
How do you guarantee it if you aren't 100% sure?
- butbutz, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2enough with the damn phone
- Gee1004, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3Good. Apple isn't doing crap with the iPhone. No updates or patches.

- nolesfan247, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0You know, I need some of this cum for my love life as well. Stop forcing me to waste it on these stories!!!

- mobilehavoc, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Until it's reproduced by at least one other person it's a BS hoax.
- Giga, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0So someone reproducing it magically rewires the universe such that a lier who thought up some BS hoax magically mutates into someone who is telling the truth and a functional iPhone without AT&T appears in their lap? Good to know.
It should read "I will not believe this until someone else can reproduce it," it does not mean that it actually is a hoax.

http://tinyurl.com/ys38lt - guttertrash, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2total *****.
handsets have an IMEI number which is the phones MAC address on the network. This number must be whitelisted in order for it to be routed on a providers network. the sim card is just a login acct. just like if someone has a pppoe acct you can use your own login and have usage charged to your own acct instead of theirs. HOWEVER i see no reason why you couldnt simply present an IMEI number to a carrier, have them add it to their network and then use a standard sim. other than apple being pricks that is. btw i am an apple beta tester and i own several macs so fanboys dont bother giving me greif, they are pricks, at least in this matter.- kolais, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You probably meant IMSI which is MS'es address in SS7 network.
- Kikokun, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0oh yeah, screw AT&T, they're crooks on the Bush cartel payroll, spying on everyone of us.
Sweet!! - starlinkuk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2He doesn't know what hes on about... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subscriber_Identity_Module
RTFM of the way they work moron!
You would have to completely re-program the SIM
Buried as inaccurate! - yingjai, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I thought we all agreed on no more iPhone stories.
- MakJak, on 10/17/2007, -0/+0is iphone comes with vodafone, virgin, o2, 3, virgin and orange mobile phone pay monthly contract deal. i found a site where you can find latest mobile phone deals.
http://www.3mobilephonedeal.co.uk - harrygoaz, on 12/12/2007, -0/+0So some people are willing to spend 600 euro for an unlocked iPhone in Germany. According to customers who have bought the unlock iPhones, their IMEI number is recorded after their purchase and sent to Apple.
