iPhone edge down nationwide
howardforums.com — Edge isnt working in most markets for iPhone users today

- hemanrulez, on 10/11/2007, -6/+49Edge isnt working for me here in Seattle,WA all day today. Multiple reports of it not working just on the iPhone in other markets as well.
Other edge devices work on ATT though, so its just the iPhone which is not working- JonRick, on 10/11/2007, -1/+45I live in San Diego, Ca and it's down. Not just for iPhone users either. Both my girlfriend and I who have the highest possible data plans for our phones (Nokia 6682 and HTC Wizard) can't connect either.
- thecompkid, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15Hey, guys, you can call at&t and request a service credit. Do it, seriously. Sorry for the comment abuse, but I would take advantage of any opportunity to ***** up at&t.
- allmarsh, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3This makes $ense. There are 500,000+ new iphones using At&t data service. Now all iphone users will be prompted to setup wifi access. This shifts the burden away from At&t's pipes and onto the shoulders of local area network administrators answering emails for ssid keys, ip allocations and Mac address access. Can you imagine the millions of dollars recouped in bandwidth costs over time?
- potp, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2there are like more then 10+ million edge enabled phone and you think a paltry few hundred thousand iPhone can take down the whole network. How stupid are you?
- allmarsh, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I didn't say a few hundred thousand iphones could take down the whole network. I did say that It makes fiscal sense for there to be outages. They are probably strategically planned.
- allmarsh, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Strategery
- RCourtney, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Let me correct your sentence, if I may...
"Can you imagine the millions of dollars lost that we could have overcharging customers for bandwidth over time?"
That's why all the major cell carriers in the US have resisted wifi enabled phones for so long.

- masterc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+27Nobody cares
- Razster, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4Have you ever looked at the Northern California Cingular/AT&T transponders/Antenna? My friend is a Dish/Module installer for the largest company who work directly for Sprint, T-Moble which run the latest network, well over the slow EDGE.
I've seen photos of the AT&T antennas being held up my roofing nails and bailing wire to point the the right direction. I've terminated my Cigular service and went to T-Moble, far better connection and coverage. Just wish the iPhone wasn't stuck with a crappy provide :( - dearreid, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2I thought mine was down too, but then turned off WiFi and Edge suddenly works again. Try cycling your WiFi on and off, and see if Edge comes back.
- ilgaz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Products from serious phone companies also has CSD (circuit switched data) for emergency purposes. Even 3G N95 must have one. When GPRS/3G breaks, device falls back to dial up (ISDN) system.
I never asked this question: Doesn't it have CSD? If not, what does this thing really has? - cleverboy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1EDGE works fine here. I did have to take my iPhone in and out of "sleep" mode earlier though. West Bridgewater, MA. I'd post from my iPhone, but Digg is even a dog on my PC Firefox when the comments mount up. Yech.
- cheekdog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2down since around 10AM in the vancouver, wa area, too...
- Calcularius, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Talked to Apple Support just about an hour ago...
they suggested:
Switch iPhone to Airplane Mode.
wait about 15 seconds.
switch back.
This has helped get Edge back after getting the 'cannot Activate' message.
I've had to do it twice... I hope this isn't how it's usually done.
In Seattle area, btw. - PRlME, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2the Sprint boys are laffing there heads off right about now

- AZTriGuy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I'm in Phoenix too, can't get EDGE going on my Treo. Not just iPhone, all devices using EDGE are out.
- lateralus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4You probably didn't purchase the correct iPhone accessories.

- Vanadium, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8I haven't been able to connect from Boulder, CO all morning. There was a short spurt of it working about an hour ago for about 10 minutes, but that quickly went away. This is confirmed from 2 separate iPhone users.
- philfro, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Same deal in Broomfield, CO -- confirmed by 3 of us here.
- morcheeba, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It worked for me at 9:30 am, and then just now (4:50 pm) -- I was on wifi for most of the day.
- mmaximus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0No issues down in Littleton/Centennial.
- Keropipi, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Down in Bellevue, WA as well.
- hemanrulez, on 10/11/2007, -7/+11I'm surprised this story hasn't gotten more traction already. Didn't Apple sell half a million of these phones!
- Notafanboi, on 10/11/2007, -23/+18It hasn't gotten a lot of "play" at all simply because the Apple faithful have learned to live with less-than-stellar products from Apple forever. If this were any other consumer product, NBC would have been all over it by now (witness the BBerry outages recently...got play on all the major networks). But Apple users are, by and large, OK with inferior service and faulty products...they just aren't that picky. That's what makes them "fans" versus consumers.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8" just aren't that picky"
Wait. That doesn't make sense. If Apple users just aren't picky then they would go for the cheaper option, no? Apple users are Apples users because of the quality associated with the Apple brand and pay more for it. If they weren't picky about quality they wouldn't use Apple products at all.- Tenlow, on 10/11/2007, -10/+7No, apple users are apple users because of the name brand associated with apple products. By buying apple, they're saying they are better than everyone else. It doesnt matter if the products are faulty, they still spent more than you or i.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I'm a Windows user since version 3. I've built all of the PC's I've owned except for 1. In fact I have a home built machine in a Thermaltake case right beside me. I got a Mac a little over a year about and it has nothing to do with the label or wanting to appear better. I think it's sad that people believe this.
- randomgeek, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3That makes no sense. Being "better than everyone else" includes actually -being- better. Regardless the argument doesn't stand up because people that like Apple use Apple products and the people that like Dell use Dell products and the people that like HP use HP products, etc. "Brand loyalty" doesn't make anyone better than anyone else, it means they like a specific brand. On top of which, every company has it's less than stellar moments, it's just that non-Apple people love to jump on those moments and scream SEE?! YOU'RE NOT BETTER!? It sounds more like a PC inferiority complex to me.
- Tenlow, on 10/11/2007, -10/+7No, apple users are apple users because of the name brand associated with apple products. By buying apple, they're saying they are better than everyone else. It doesnt matter if the products are faulty, they still spent more than you or i.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8" just aren't that picky"
- thesandbender, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Corporations do not sign service contracts with providers without well defined service-level agreements (SLAs). There is no chance that Apple does not have an SLA with AT&T, especially given Apple's reputation for customer service/satisfaction (deserved or not).
I would not be at all surprised it Apple drove down AT&T in bargaining by dangling sales in front of them knowing what a F-U they are and that they would most likely be able to break the contract in a year or two.
(Former AT&T Customer who refuses to buy an iPhone from them and can't wait for the iPhone to be on another provider)- DrDabbles, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1YOU are the one that signed an SLA, not Apple. YOU are consuming the ATT service. Don't speak on a matter you have no knowledge of.
- Notafanboi, on 10/11/2007, -23/+18It hasn't gotten a lot of "play" at all simply because the Apple faithful have learned to live with less-than-stellar products from Apple forever. - Keropipi, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Spoke with a CSR and he confirmed that AT&T's GPRS/EDGE has been down since 9:56am in Washington State
- philfro, on 10/11/2007, -4/+39An AT&T Technical service rep quoted an ETR of 4PM PST, after which customers could call for a service credit.
What a load of *****. They should just issue the service credit to anyone with a data plan.- adml_shake, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4that would be every iphone user wouldn't it? much cheaper for them to keep that info on the down low and only give it to people that call
- randomgeek, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Too bad it was just put on Digg. Bwa ha ha
- adml_shake, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4that would be every iphone user wouldn't it? much cheaper for them to keep that info on the down low and only give it to people that call
- hemanrulez, on 10/11/2007, -10/+50I bet Apple is rethinking their "5 year exclusive" deal with ATT. I wish they had done the deal with T-mobile or allowed us to use the phone on T-mobile. 3 days of being an ATT customer and I already regret it.
- locojones, on 10/11/2007, -4/+28We tried to warn you.
- jeepnut24, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3X2
- migitalwarfare, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2i've been saying this was bound to happen for weeks. you can't expect to add this many new customers, not do a damn thing to beef up your network, and not have service issues. this is why AT&T will end up getting bought out... again. they just don't know what the hell they're doing in the cellular biz.
i've even been having regular service issues in Providence, RI, saying i'm not a subscriber when i try to make a call- turpenine, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They certainly did work on the network in my area for the iphone. On friday I had to reboot my phone to reconnect to the network.
- migitalwarfare, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1you sure it wasn't because of a flood of new traffic to the network? that WAS the day the iphones went on sale
- turpenine, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They certainly did work on the network in my area for the iphone. On friday I had to reboot my phone to reconnect to the network.

- twiny3, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7DOWN: Santa Fe, NM
- TXCraig, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9Not good for Apple... I have had a line of people in my office all day to see it work.. and its down.. Is at&t like this all the time? A nataional outage does not make sinc
- gioshe, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3"Is at&t like this all the time?"
In case it was not understood, EDGE works for all other devices.
I don't see how people arrive to the conclusion that AT&T is having a problem? - DrDabbles, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3No, it doesn't make sinc. It doesn't make sense either. And now you all get to experience my personal two-vendor hell. One will point to the other and vice-versa. It will be interesting to see how customer support plays out with this type of device.
- gioshe, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3"Is at&t like this all the time?"
- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -53/+112Hahahhahahah. The iPhone release is gonna be a text book example of how NOT to do a phone release.
- LordHelmet, on 10/11/2007, -37/+18No need for smug douchebagery.
- underthelinux, on 10/11/2007, -7/+28pfft please, with all the crap that i've had to endure re: the iPhone, i think smug douchebagery is entirely appropriate.

- pixeldust, on 10/11/2007, -15/+19When was the last time 500,000 cell phones were sold in one weekend like the iphone? Nothing really major has gone wrong for such a large release.
- DrDabbles, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8You make the assumption 500K were actually SOLD versus shipped to stores. Most, if not all, stores still have stock.
- jeepnut24, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3And you also have to discount the numbers on Craiglist, ebay and various others selling for "profit". Our local craigslist has several dozen at marked up prices.
- migitalwarfare, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2when the wireless data network that the phone relies on for MOST of it's features fails across the country, i'd say that's a pretty major issue
- DrDabbles, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8You make the assumption 500K were actually SOLD versus shipped to stores. Most, if not all, stores still have stock.
- Ragnar0k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Yes, but, they KNEW, from all the hubub and shipments, how much load will be applied to the network. In fact, as more iPhones are sold, it'll be an even larger load. With months of forewarning this should not have happened, AT&T just failed at delivering the network that it promised.
Your telco monopolies scare me.

- mississippiman, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Its working in north MS, i haven't had any trouble today.
- roflcawpter, on 10/11/2007, -10/+3iPhone's launch is rivaling that of PS3. Is that a good thing?
- rehehe, on 10/11/2007, -7/+5It's been fine for me in VA
- skellener, on 10/11/2007, -14/+36> iPhone edge down nationwide
Now that's funny!!!! - mouthster, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Down in San Diego, south county , its not just for iphones, I can't get data on my Blackjack using EDGE or 3G
- gafasiesornivek, on 10/11/2007, -8/+90Oh no! I bet someone wrote a 3rd party app and took down the whole edge network just like Steve Jobs said would happen!!!
- randomgeek, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Everyone said, "There is no way that could happen," but maybe Steve knew what sort of network he was getting into from the start...
- osko2052, on 10/11/2007, -14/+18This is why I love my BlackBerry Pearl 8100 with my data plan from T-Mobile. It's never down.
- cawpin, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15Well, when you're T-Mobile and have about 5 subscribers your network isn't ever under high load.
- osko2052, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12T-Mobile is # 1 in Customer Satisfaction according to JD Power and Associates. Over half the people I know with cell phone plans have T-Mobile for a carrier. The other half spend their time bitching about Verizon, AT & T and US Cellular.
- LeonardNimrod, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1THat may be so, but with a mean reporting 500,000 iPhones sold, about half are new subscribers and half of the current AT&T subscribers are new to Data services on a cell phone and everyone is now using AT&T's data network extensively as there is finally a phone with a full internet browser that is easy to use.
The load jsut got too much for AT&T.
- randomgeek, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7Over half the people you know? So, what then.. 2 1/2 people? Seriously, anecdotal evidence isn't evidence. I wish people would learn this. "But I know plenty of people that..." yeah, and? Out of 300 million people, you think your few friends are really reflective of the whole?
- DrDabbles, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Yeah, and verizon AND cingular both have the most reliable networks and fewest dropped calls. Wait, no, those metrics are skewed to mislead customers? Marketing strikes again!

- mlock2k, on 10/11/2007, -8/+65why did they pick AT&T ?
- over9, on 10/11/2007, -21/+25Cos they are Apple. They don't let consumers choose. Just like with their hardware.
- randomgeek, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3Why don't you just do a quick Google search instead of spreading FUD?
- minastirth, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Because Verizon was stupid enough to refuse.
- jtizzle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6because at&t was the only provider to open up and give apple free reign to overhaul the end-user phone experience.

- djnick, on 10/11/2007, -17/+11where are the apple fanboys who usually defend the iphone when ***** happens?
- Casedot, on 10/11/2007, -7/+6they are all crying in the corner cause their iPhones don't work.
but don't worry, they will be back soon to talk about how much windows mobile sucks- randomgeek, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3Windows Mobile DOES suck. I did support for the Palm Treo 700w and it was a freakin' nightmare. Total POS. The answer to literally every other question was "I don't know why Microsoft chose to do that in WM5." No one had problems with the device, only OS-specific issues that were purely Microsofts fault.
- jhop, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11Uhhhhh, this has absolutely nothing to do with the iPhone. Probably just in the title to get front page. EDGE is EDGE. Who cares what device you're trying to use it with. I'm in Seattle and EDGE is down for my W810i. Should I digg another story about SonyEricsson EDGE being down?
- z3rr0, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Watching AT&T scramble to fix broken ***** on their network? :-D
- TomFrost, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11This isn't the iPhone. This is AT&T. And while the service could be a hell of a lot better, they were the only provider willing to give Apple the huge freedoms they got to transform the phone buying experience. I love my iPhone, but the provider.. whatcha gonna do?
- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7Wrong. IT is an iPhone problem. iPhones are the only devices unable to connect to the ATT edge network right now.
- randomgeek, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3False. Why don't you read some more, smart guy.
- takamalak, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Jeez, you are a ***** moron.

- Casedot, on 10/11/2007, -7/+6they are all crying in the corner cause their iPhones don't work.
- TommyBoy919, on 10/11/2007, -14/+9EDGE is a complete joke. Enjoy your dial-up speeds. I can't believe that Apple didn't include 3G in the iPhone. Its the sole reason I'm keeping my Q instead of getting an iPhone. I have a feeling that they will regret their decision to go with AT&T's crappy network. Way to pick what is, by FAR, the worst of the US carriers.
- johnpaul191, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2flat out because 3G coverage is still spotty. the places that have full on 3G coverage (mostly cities) are also more likely to have WiFi... and WiFi is going to be a lot faster than 3G.
- DrDabbles, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You do realize that the cell radio can be made to use either 3G signaling when available OR the normal EDGE, right? I have an EVDO phone that also steps down to 1x signaling when EV is too weak. That was a ***** excuse given to ***** people into not asking anymore.
My only theory is that Apple is waiting until the broadcom/qualcom or whoever lawsuit is settled about the 3G patents and chips. Too much like the BlackBerry scare when NTP sued RIM.

- abes, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I enjoy the fact my phone gets decent battery life. Pages load fast enough that when I'm on the run, I can get the information I need. With any hand-held device, the screen is too small (as it would have to be on a phone) to do any long term surfing anyways.
I'm a new AT&T customer, but I am sick of Verizon. I'm sick of them charging for every little thing you want for your phone, and crippling much of the phone's functionality. Even if you can get a phone with decent hardware with Verizon, chances are you can't use all of it.
Besides which, it's definitely not nationwide. In NYC I'm getting edge just fine, with fast enough speeds. - mjhstudios, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I agree, keeping my Q
- anamanaman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You have no idea. When using EDGE, all incoming calls go to voicemail. I had EDGE 2 years ago on my 6700 and should have known this. Yet I bought an iPhone and rediscovered how ***** retarded this service actually is. The decision to go EDGE instead of 3g is disastrous and it has nothing to do with speed. It has to do with the fact that you cant get any friggin calls while you use it.
- johnpaul191, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2flat out because 3G coverage is still spotty. the places that have full on 3G coverage (mostly cities) are also more likely to have WiFi... and WiFi is going to be a lot faster than 3G.
- Tobark, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6Fine in Philly....
- lgc90, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Fine for me in Philly too. In fact, more than fine. I haven't done an actual speed test, but this seems damn fast; I've even been using it to watch videos.
- Woomanchu, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Down in Minneapolis. Fortunately I am near a wifi hotspot.

- gordonf238, on 10/11/2007, -17/+13Oh no! How will all the geeky iPhone fanatics check their Apple stocks now? With the stocks widget unable to refresh; Will they try to leech off someone's Wi-fi? Or will they get a latte at the nearest Starbucks and open-up their MacBooks? Only time will tell, but know that the fate of this nation is in their hands!
- randomgeek, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5Uhm. With the one of the 4 open wireless signals I'm getting right now?

- mehron, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Was a bit slow, yes. But I thought that I have been visiting too complex pages. But now, perhaps it might have been attributed to the problems people have been experiencing. But yeah, no actual 'outage.'
- Sethwm2, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Working fine on my iPhone here in Rhode Island
- Davisourus, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Awe, shizz. I've got stock it T.

- randomgeek, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5OH NOES KITTY R STOLDED MUH MEGABITS?!?!!
- RAiNsTorm, on 10/11/2007, -9/+25And now we begin to see what was the most glossed over fact of all with the iPhone... the service. Without the service it is a pretty little thing that can call 911, since Apple chose to totally cripple it when not in a service contract. That phone could do anything, and at the end of the day it is dependent on AT&T, not Apple. Before this whole iPhone debacle, very few people would have rated AT&T very high, but everyone chose to turn a blind eye for the Jesus Phone. When it comes to consumer electronics, people fall for the same stuff every time.
- AZTriGuy, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3Overreaction? My phone was working fine, it's just the internet EDGE access that was down. Again, calls worked fine, it's not just a brick that can only call 911. So I can't get to websites for a few hours, ***** happens.
- MattZed, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3So you paid 599 for just a phone? Not a phone that can use Google Maps to find the nearest sushi bar?
Shame, you could have saved so much.- jonahan52, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I have wifi you know...
