- dilchill, on 10/11/2007, -3/+50Correction to description....Ryan Block.
- bradbaxter, on 10/11/2007, -11/+47I would rather have a phone that doesn't have to be "jailbroken" every few weeks. It seems kinda desperate.
- RadicalEdward, on 10/11/2007, -2/+28Where the heck are these guys that all these major developments are happening at like 3 in the morning... Good job nonetheless, donated $10 to niacin
- betterth, on 10/11/2007, -2/+25This doesn't look good though people. This uses the .tiff exploit found in Mobile Safari, and is a very easy and quick patch for Apple to close this. It took a couple weeks this time to exploit a hole in security that was already made famous by the PSP-scene. Things aren't looking too good for post 1.1.1 homebrew apps. :(
- xienze, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16More like the PSP and the iPhone use the exact same TIFF decoding library...
- pauldy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17Sometimes you have to do what you have to do, no one else offers the same hardware. Your free to buy whatever you want though and obviously you have some interest in it or your comment wouldn't have wound up here.
- kindwarrior, on 10/11/2007, -5/+16I just listened to Erica Sadun's explanation about how/why the 1.1.1 update bricked the phone; It's good to know it wasn't malicious on Apple's part. I would expect the TIFF exploit to be remedied soon, however, a lot of the impression that Apple is at war with the Hackers was born from the sense that there was malice in the update but here's what I think is really going on:
Apple is culturally tolerant of the hacks; They are contractually obligated to AT&T to fix holes. They have a fix that will brick hacked phones. They cannot legitimately explore how to protect these hacks nor is their any business incentive for them to do so, yet they still make the effort to warn the hacker community that this fix is coming.
I suspect, in this context, that Apple will create (or allow) a 3rd party opportunity somehow but we need to be circumspect about how we approach our hacks.
Meanwhile, the hacks are important: 1) they clearly demonstrate the market for 3rd party apps 2) they help apple improve their product. - deepblue, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11FREEEEEEDOM!
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I'd say all three were idiots since two of them bought something they hate
- viperrepiv, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11isn't the TIFF exploit the same one originally used for the PSP?
- rollerz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I think most of these blogs are based out in California, so 3 am could only be Midnight PST (depending where you live of course)
- wiachy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7are they making a NOOB FREINDLY way to do this? its confusing as hell.
- seaners, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6yea, i would agree that you hang out with morons, good shout parrot
- darkciti2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8You don't "have" to jailbreak it if you don't want the added features. The basic feature set of the iPhone is pretty damn nice to begin with.

niiiiiiiice - variance75, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Its funny to me how people can find Apple exploits so easily now that there is a reason. For all the talk about how secure and how great Apple is, we find all types of vulnerabilities in system now that they actually have a user base.
I'm not an Apple or MS fanboi but lets be smarter about who we call evil and the claims about superiority. - SirBotchness, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I'll wait till the next update brings the dramabomb. It's like bart simpson grabbing the cupcake with electricity.
- ahawks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I've had the ability to play with an iPod touch and an iPhone recently, and they are sweet. I'm dying to get one or the other.
But I'm not going to. Why?
iPhone: Because I'm stuck in a TMobile contract and also dislike AT&T
Either: Because of this lock-down nonsense. If Apple ever opens it up, I'll reconsider. - potterboy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Wasn't the PSP hacked with a TIFF exploit?
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Again, go modify your TV or microwave oven and then try to take it back with obvious mods. You DO own the iPhone (if you bought one). Modify it to your heart's content. Do with it as you please. Just don't expect Apple to replace it because you made an obvious choice to use it in a way not intended. Grow up and stop whining. If you can't live with the way this thing works, pick another phone. Not like you don't have any choice in the matter.
- Wailord, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Still waiting on the public release, but Niacin said that will come today. Also, it's not 100% third-party apps can be installed via this method, but very likely.
- bradbaxter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I DO in fact have in interest in an iPhone -- however, I certainly wouldn't get one unless I was willing to put up with AT&T.
- aceslick911, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4you make it sound like apple is winning... oh yee of little hacker community faith...
- greenmountain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_v1_1_1_Jailbreak_AppT ...
Hey, it is only 49 steps. - 5wallace, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8Unfortunately, this is going to turn out to be a waste of time. With the next patch Apple WILL brick your iPhones and turn off access to all third party apps. This pisses me off, but that is the way it is. It is only a matter of time before Apple begins releasing approved 3rd party apps through iTunes. This makes me happy. I am perfectly willing to pay for approved third party apps that I know are going to be supported and keep working from update to update. Why continue to waste your time with hacking the phone? It just seems like it would be an unbelievable headache trying to stay one step ahead of Apple. Unless you want to use another carrier, of course, that will not be supported ever, I'm afraid.
- iMaciMan1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3this is what america fights for... FREEDOM
- kevinwiz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Call me when they get something normal people can use.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3You're kidding right? I'm not sure how one equals the other, though OS X is certainly not unexploitable. You're example reads like, "HEY! I deliberately and intentionally went out of my way to install a virus on my computer and now I have a virus on my computer! Apple sucks!"
- jjmckay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah buying an Apple product is freedom. lol
- kindwarrior, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21.1.1 is a significantly improved framework that *happens* to brick hacked phones. One could argue that perhaps 1.0.2 could have been better or the updater could have done more to prevent the install if bricking was a potential, but that seems to be sacrificing the good for the perfect (which doesn't exist in the industry; Understand that the iPhone is running Leopard which is not yet an officially released OS; It was supposed to be released this spring (before the iPhone) but coding for the iPhone pre-empted it). You want to complain about the new video cable for iPods, I'm with you; But if you're making a big deal about the 1.1.1 update at this point, I'd have to assume your just one of those sad pathetic Apple outsiders who spends their time hating Apple to salve their own egos.
- sakuraz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2never?
What are you, blind?
What article are you on? - phoomp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yup, it's good to know that Apple was just being incompetent, and not malicious, when they released software that bricked some iPhones (modded or not). It's worse that a non-Apple programmer was able to identify the flaw.
- mandarin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Thats a kiss Steve Jobs ass card...

digg.com/apple/iPhone_v1_1_1_Jailbreak_AppTapp_Installation_Guide - greenmountain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Now, would you guys please wait before installing the next update?
- AndrewWiggin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Does anyone else wonder why they publish exactly what exploit it is that they use, and how to patch that exploit, giving Apple a walkthrough for fixing the "issue"?
- towlie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You have to point mobile safari at the malformed TIFF file, so I'm pretty sure apple would pick up on it quickly when the hack instructs people to view the file.
- bhattsan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yep
- mwalker05, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1first of all your warranty is voided. secondly have you even looked around? if you want a smartphone with better hardware and apps then check out the openmoko, set to be released this month.
- greenmountain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Homer and others are not complaining about denial of
warranty,or that they broke thier own phone screwing with it.
The mods do not break the phone.
Apple could have set the update to be refused,or
simply restore the phone to its retail condition.
Instead, Apple's update broke the phones.
That is the source of the hard feelings.
There is no good reason for doing this. - SenatorChubby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1FREEDOM!
- mattrud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1let me know when i can put apps on my ipod.
- jmoh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I dont understand, okay so Apple is bound to fill "holes" in the Iphone, but why don't they let hackers do whatever on the ipod touch? The Ipod touch is already crippled compared to the Iphone and because of this, my respect for apple has gone down.
- phoomp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Because filling in those holes will make the iPhone less enticing. Apple has a history of crippling one product in order to make another, higher revenue generating product more appealing.
- greenmountain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Parrot,he is saying he has a choice, and chooses to say "***** apple".
He likely regards his computers as something more than a microwave.
It is you doing the whining here. - terriblelie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Agreed. I Am definitely not getting and iPhone until I can get it activated with Sprint. I have had Sprint for 5 years and have had little problem. I do not trust AT&T
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Of course he has a choice. I don't care if he says "***** Apple" until the cows come home. It's not like it's an exclusive little club here on digg filled with Apple haters. I say he's whining when he claims he (or anyone else that buys an iPhone) doesn't own it because he can't do as he pleases with it. As I explained, he's welcome to do anything he wants with an iPhone and I won't say a word. Apple won't care either, they just won't replace or fix it when he screws it up doing something the device wasn't intended to do.
Since he has the cash to buy this thing ($399 or $599), he also has to accept responsibility for what happens to it after the sale. Unless it's a hardware fault or software problem based on what the device is for and it's stock, you're on your own.
As much as I hate car analogies, here's another. You buy a car with 15-inch wheels. That's the size that it was intended to have. The maker tells you repeatedly that putting bigger tires on it can damage it. You put 17-inch tires on it and the damage occurs. Is the car maker responsible because YOU did something they didn't intend to install, it wasn't designed for, and you were warned NOT to do? Maybe you did it because you had some killer 17-inch rims that just looked so nice, or it gave you a better ride, doesn't matter. You broke the warranty, you live with the consequences. - sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Your name is pretty accurate to what you are. Do you have any dignity?
- CJChesterson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That was one method... among many others. With so many people looking for exploits, there's a good chance someone will find one eventually.
